Charge transfer electrostatic model of compositional order in perovskite alloys
We introduce an electrostatic model including charge transfer, which is shown
to account for the observed B-site ordering in Pb-based perovskite alloys. The
model allows charge transfer between A-sites and is a generalization of
Bellaiche and Vanderbilt's purely electrostatic model. The large covalency of
Pb^{2+} compared to Ba^{2+} is modeled by an environment dependent effective
A-site charge. Monte Carlo simulations of this model successfully reproduce the
long range compositional order of both Pb-based and Ba-based complex
A(BB^{'}B^{''})O_3 perovskite alloys. The models are also extended to study
systems with A-site and B-site doping, such as
(Na_{1/2}La_{1/2})(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3,
(Ba_{1-x}La_{x})(Mg_{(1+x)/3}Nb_{(2-x)/3})O_3 and
(Pb_{1-x}La_{x})(Mg_{(1+x)/3}Ta_{(2-x)/3})O_3. General trends are reproduced by
purely electrostatic interactions, and charge transfer effects indicate that
local structural relaxations can tip the balance between different B-site
orderings in Pb based materials.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Electrostatic model of atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys
We present a simple ionic model which successfully reproduces the various
types of compositional long-range order observed in a large class of complex
insulating perovskite alloys. The model assumes that the driving mechanism
responsible for the ordering is simply the electrostatic interaction between
the different ionic species. A possible new explanation for the anomalous
long-range order observed in some Pb relaxor alloys, involving the proposed
existence of a small amount of Pb^4+ on the B sublattice, is suggested by an

Compositional Inversion Symmetry Breaking in Ferroelectric Perovskites
Ternary cubic perovskite compounds of the form A_(1/3)A'_(1/3)A''_(1/3)BO_3
and AB_(1/3)B'_(1/3)B''_(1/3)O_3, in which the differentiated cations form an
alternating series of monolayers, are studied using first-principles methods.
Such compounds are representative of a possible new class of materials in which
ferroelectricity is perturbed by compositional breaking of inversion symmetry.
For isovalent substitution on either sublattice, the ferroelectric double-well
potential is found to persist, but becomes sufficiently asymmetric that
minority domains may no longer survive. The strength of the symmetry breaking
is enormously stronger for heterovalent substitution, so that the double-well
behavior is completely destroyed. Possible means of tuning between these

Ab-initio design of perovskite alloys with predetermined properties: The case of Pb(Sc_{0.5} Nb_{0.5})O_{3}
A first-principles derived approach is combined with the inverse Monte Carlo
technique to determine the atomic orderings leading to prefixed properties in
Pb(Sc_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})O_{3} perovskite alloy. We find that some arrangements
between Sc and Nb atoms result in drastic changes with respect to the
disordered material, including ground states of new symmetries, large
enhancement of electromechanical responses, and considerable shift of the Curie
temperature. We discuss the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these

Neutron scattering study of PbMgTaO and BaMgTaO complex perovskites
Neutron scattering investigations were carried out in
PbMgTaO and BaMgTaO complex
perovskites. The crystal structure of both compounds does not show any phase
transition in the temperature range 1.5 -- 730 K. Whereas the temperature
dependence of the lattice parameter of BaMgTaO follows the
classical expectations, the lattice parameter of relaxor ferroelectric
PbMgTaO exhibits anomalies. One of these anomalies is
observed in the same temperature range as the peak in the dielectric
susceptibility. We find that in PbMgTaO, lead ions are
displaced from the ideal positions in the perovskite structure at all
temperatures. Consequently short-range order is present. This induces strong
diffuse scattering with an anisotropic shape in wavevector space. The
temperature dependences of the diffuse neutron scattering intensity and of the
amplitude of the lead displacements are similar
The polarizability model for ferroelectricity in perovskite oxides
This article reviews the polarizability model and its applications to
ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The motivation for the introduction of the
model is discussed and nonlinear oxygen ion polarizability effects and their
lattice dynamical implementation outlined. While a large part of this work is
dedicated to results obtained within the self-consistent-phonon approximation
(SPA), also nonlinear solutions of the model are handled which are of interest
to the physics of relaxor ferroelectrics, domain wall motions, incommensurate
phase transitions. The main emphasis is to compare the results of the model
with experimental data and to predict novel phenomena.Comment: 55 pages, 35 figure
Pituitary Insufficiency and Hyperprolactinemia Associated with Giant Intra- and Suprasellar Carotid Artery Aneurysm
Pituitary insufficiency secondary to internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm is a very rare condition. Its prevalence is reported as 0.17% (Heshmati et al., 2001). We present a case of pituitary insufficiency and hyperprolactinemia secondary to suprasellar giant intracranial aneurysm. A 71-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with symptoms of hypopituitarism, hyperprolactinemia, and visual field defect. His pituitary MRI and cerebral angiography revealed a giant saccular aneurysm filling suprasellar cistern arising from the ophthalmic segment of the right ICA. Endovascular treatment was performed on the patient to decrease the mass effect of aneurysm and improve the hypophysis dysfunction. After treatment, his one-year follow-up showed the persistence of hypophysis insufficiency, decrease of prolactin (PRL) level, and normal visual field. An intracranial aneurysm can mimic the appearance and behavior of a pituitary adenoma. Intracranial aneurysms should be taken into consideration in the situation of hypopituitarism and hyperprolactinemia. It is important to distinguish them because their treatment approach is different from the others
Canonical correlation analysis applied to production and reproduction traits of meat type quails
ABSTRACT: Data from 629 meat type quails were used to study association between two different sets of traits: egg production and reproduction. Traits related to reproduction were: body weight at 42 days (W42), average egg weight (AEW), age at sexual maturity (ASM); and production traits: number of eggs produced from 42 until 182th day considering intervals of 35 days each period (P1, P2, P3 and P4). Canonical correlations were used to describe the association between these two sets of traits. The canonical coefficients indicated that egg production and reproductive traits were moderately related (0.3475). The first partial period of production (P1) and age at sexual maturity were the most relevant traits among the analyzed variables. Results show that selecting animals with lower age at sexual maturity might lead to an increase on number of eggs produced until 77 days, although it might also lead to a decrease on egg weight. Breeding programs aiming to improve quails production should consider selection strategies to decrease age at sexual maturity and then, as correlated response, increased egg production might be observed
