Revealing structure and evolution within the corona of the Seyfert galaxy I Zw 1
X-ray spectral timing analysis is presented of XMM-Newton observations of the
narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 (I Zw 1) taken in 2015 January. After
exploring the effect of background flaring on timing analyses, X-ray time lags
between the reflection-dominated 0.3-1.0keV energy and continuum-dominated
1.0-4.0keV band are measured, indicative of reverberation off the inner
accretion disc. The reverberation lag time is seen to vary as a step function
in frequency; across lower frequency components of the variability, 3e-4 to
1.2e-3Hz a lag of 160s is measured, but the lag shortens to (59 +/- 4)s above
1.2e-3Hz. The lag-energy spectrum reveals differing profiles between these
ranges with a change in the dip showing the earliest arriving photons. The low
frequency signal indicates reverberation of X-rays emitted from a corona
extended at low height over the disc while at high frequencies, variability is
generated in a collimated core of the corona through which luminosity
fluctuations propagate upwards. Principal component analysis of the variability
supports this interpretation, showing uncorrelated variation in the spectral
slope of two power law continuum components. The distinct evolution of the two
components of the corona is seen as a flare passes inwards from the extended to
the collimated portion. An increase in variability in the extended corona was
found preceding the initial increase in X-ray flux. Variability from the
extended corona was seen to die away as the flare passed into the collimated
core leading to a second sharper increase in the X-ray count rate.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Fermions and Disorder in Ising and Related Models in Two Dimensions
The aspects of phase transitions in the two-dimensional Ising models modified
by quenched and annealed site disorder are discussed in the framework of
fermionic approach based on the reformulation of the problem in terms of
integrals with anticommuting Grassmann variables.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, no figures. The discussion is merely based on a

On the rise of proton-proton cross-sections at high energies
The rise of the total, elastic and inelastic hadronic cross sections at high
energies is investigated by means of an analytical parametrization, with the
exponent of the leading logarithm contribution as a free fit parameter. Using
derivative dispersion relations with one subtraction, two different fits to
proton-proton and antiproton-proton total cross section and rho parameter data
are developed, reproducing well the experimental information in the energy
region 5 GeV - 7 TeV. The parametrization for the total cross sections is then
extended to fit the elastic (integrated) cross section data in the same energy
region, with satisfactory results. From these empirical results we extract the
energy dependence of several physical quantities: inelastic cross section,
ratios elastic/total, inelastic/total cross sections, ratio
total-cross-section/elastic-slope, elastic slope and optical point. All data,
fitted and predicted, are quite well described. We find a statistically
consistent solution indicating: (1) an increase of the hadronic cross sections
with the energy faster than the log-squared bound by Froissart and Martin; (2)
asymptotic limits 1/3 and 2/3 for the ratios elastic/total and inelastic/total
cross sections, respectively, a result in agreement with unitarity. These
indications corroborate recent theoretical arguments by Ya. I. Azimov on the
rise of the total cross section.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, discussions improved with further
clarifications, references added and updated, one note added, results and
conclusions unchanged. Version to be published in J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part.

Size-dependent bandgap and particle size distribution of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals
A new analytical expression for the size-dependent bandgap of colloidal
semiconductor nanocrystals is proposed within the framework of the finite-depth
square-well effective mass approximation in order to provide a quantitative
description of the quantum confinement effect. This allows one to convert
optical spectroscopic data (photoluminescence spectrum and absorbance edge)
into accurate estimates for the particle size distributions of colloidal
systems even if the traditional effective mass model is expected to fail, which
occurs typically for very small particles belonging to the so-called strong
confinement limit. By applying the reported theoretical methodologies to CdTe
nanocrystals synthesized through wet chemical routes, size distributions are
inferred and compared directly to those obtained from atomic force microscopy
and transmission electron microscopy. This analysis can be used as a
complementary tool for the characterization of nanocrystal samples of many
other systems such as the II-VI and III-V semiconductor materials.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
