FLAGCAL:A flagging and calibration package for radio interferometric data
We describe a flagging and calibration pipeline intended for making quick
look images from GMRT data. The package identifies and flags corrupted
visibilities, computes calibration solutions and interpolates these onto the
target source. These flagged calibrated visibilities can be directly imaged
using any standard imaging package. The pipeline is written in "C" with the

Quality of ultrasound biometry obtained by local health workers in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border.
Objective:
In a refugee camp on the Thai–Burmese border, accurate dating of pregnancy relies on ultrasound measurements obtained by locally trained health workers. The aim of this study was to substantiate the accuracy of fetal biometry measurements performed by locally trained health workers by comparing derived reference equations with those published for Asian and European hospitals.
Methods:
This prospective observational study included 1090 women who had a dating crown–rump length (CRL) scan and one study-appointed ultrasound biometry scan between 16 and 40 weeks of gestation. The average of two measurements of each of biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length was used in a polynomial regression model for the mean and SD against gestational age (GA). The biometry equations obtained were compared with published equations of professional sonographers from Asian and European hospitals by evaluation of the SD and Z-scores of differences between models.
Results:
Reference equations of biometric parameters were found to fit cubic polynomial models. The observed SD values, for any given GA, of fetal biometric measurements obtained by locally trained health workers were lower than those previously reported by centers with professional sonographers. For nearly the entire GA range considered, the mean values of the Asian and European equations for all four biometric measurements were within the 90% expected range (mean ± 1.645 SD) of our equations.
Conclusion:
Locally trained health workers in a refugee camp on the Thai–Burmese border can obtain measurements that are associated with low SD values and within the normal limits of published Asian and European equations. The fact that the SD values were lower than in other studies may be explained by the use of the average of two measurements, CRL dating or motivation of the locally trained sonographer
Hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection
Coherent large-scale circulations of turbulent thermal convection in air have
been studied experimentally in a rectangular box heated from below and cooled
from above using Particle Image Velocimetry. The hysteresis phenomenon in
turbulent convection was found by varying the temperature difference between
the bottom and the top walls of the chamber (the Rayleigh number was changed
within the range of ). The hysteresis loop comprises the one-cell
and two-cells flow patterns while the aspect ratio is kept constant (). We found that the change of the sign of the degree of the anisotropy of
turbulence was accompanied by the change of the flow pattern. The developed
theory of coherent structures in turbulent convection (Elperin et al. 2002;
2005) is in agreement with the experimental observations. The observed coherent
structures are superimposed on a small-scale turbulent convection. The
redistribution of the turbulent heat flux plays a crucial role in the formation

Spin-Glass Model for Inverse Freezing
We analyze the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with disordered magnetic
interaction displaying the inverse freezing phenomenon. The behaviour of this
spin-1 model in crystal field is studied throughout the phase diagram and the
transition and spinodal lines for the model are computed using the Full Replica
Symmetry Breaking Ansatz that always yelds a thermodynamically stable phase. We
compare the results both with the quenched disordered model with Ising spins on
lattice gas - where no reentrance takes place - and with the model with
generalized spin variables recently introduced by Schupper and Shnerb [Phys.
Rev. Lett. 93, 037202 (2004)]. The simplest version of all these models, known
as Ghatak-Sherrington model, turns out to hold all the general features
characterizing an inverse transition to an amorphous phase, including the right

The Underestimation Of Egocentric Distance: Evidence From Frontal Matching Tasks
There is controversy over the existence, nature, and cause of error in egocentric distance judgments. One proposal is that the systematic biases often found in explicit judgments of egocentric distance along the ground may be related to recently observed biases in the perceived declination of gaze (Durgin & Li, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, in press), To measure perceived egocentric distance nonverbally, observers in a field were asked to position themselves so that their distance from one of two experimenters was equal to the frontal distance between the experimenters. Observers placed themselves too far away, consistent with egocentric distance underestimation. A similar experiment was conducted with vertical frontal extents. Both experiments were replicated in panoramic virtual reality. Perceived egocentric distance was quantitatively consistent with angular bias in perceived gaze declination (1.5 gain). Finally, an exocentric distance-matching task was contrasted with a variant of the egocentric matching task. The egocentric matching data approximate a constant compression of perceived egocentric distance with a power function exponent of nearly 1; exocentric matches had an exponent of about 0.67. The divergent pattern between egocentric and exocentric matches suggests that they depend on different visual cues
Enumeration of distinct mechanically stable disk packings in small systems
We create mechanically stable (MS) packings of bidisperse disks using an
algorithm in which we successively grow or shrink soft repulsive disks followed
by energy minimization until the overlaps are vanishingly small. We focus on
small systems because this enables us to enumerate nearly all distinct MS
packings. We measure the probability to obtain a MS packing at packing fraction
and find several notable results. First, the probability is highly
nonuniform. When averaged over narrow packing fraction intervals, the most
probable MS packing occurs at the highest and the probability decays
exponentially with decreasing . Even more striking, within each
packing-fraction interval, the probability can vary by many orders of
magnitude. By using two different packing-generation protocols, we show that
these results are robust and the packing frequencies do not change

A Novel Genome-Wide Association Study Approach Using Genotyping by Exome Sequencing Leads to the Identification of a Primary Open Angle Glaucoma Associated Inversion Disrupting ADAMTS17
Closed breeding populations in the dog in conjunction with advances in gene mapping and sequencing techniques facilitate mapping of autosomal recessive diseases and identification of novel disease-causing variants, often using unorthodox experimental designs. In our investigation we demonstrate successful mapping of the locus for primary open angle glaucoma in the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen dog breed with 12 cases and 12 controls, using a novel genotyping by exome sequencing approach. The resulting genome-wide association signal was followed up by genome sequencing of an individual case, leading to the identification of an inversion with a breakpoint disrupting the ADAMTS17 gene. Genotyping of additional controls and expression analysis provide strong evidence that the inversion is disease causing. Evidence of cryptic splicing resulting in novel exon transcription as a consequence of the inversion in ADAMTS17 is identified through RNAseq experiments. This investigation demonstrates how a novel genotyping by exome sequencing approach can be used to map an autosomal recessive disorder in the dog, with the use of genome sequencing to facilitate identification of a disease-associated variant
Estimating Depth from RGB and Sparse Sensing
We present a deep model that can accurately produce dense depth maps given an
RGB image with known depth at a very sparse set of pixels. The model works
simultaneously for both indoor/outdoor scenes and produces state-of-the-art
dense depth maps at nearly real-time speeds on both the NYUv2 and KITTI
datasets. We surpass the state-of-the-art for monocular depth estimation even
with depth values for only 1 out of every ~10000 image pixels, and we
outperform other sparse-to-dense depth methods at all sparsity levels. With
depth values for 1/256 of the image pixels, we achieve a mean absolute error of
less than 1% of actual depth on indoor scenes, comparable to the performance of
consumer-grade depth sensor hardware. Our experiments demonstrate that it would
indeed be possible to efficiently transform sparse depth measurements obtained
using e.g. lower-power depth sensors or SLAM systems into high-quality dense

Speech Acts in a Dialogue Game Formalisation of Critical Discussion
In this paper a dialogue game for critical discussion is developed. The dialogue game is a formalisation of the ideal discussion model that is central to the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. The formalisation is intended as a preparatory step to facilitate the development of computational tools to support the pragma-dialectical study of argumentation. An important dimension of the pragma-dialectical discussion model is the role played by speech acts. The central issue addressed in this paper is how the speech act perspective can be accommodated in the formalisation as a dialogue game. The starting point is an existing ‘basic’ dialogue game for critical discussion, in which speech acts are not addressed. The speech act perspective is introduced into the dialogue game by changing the rules that govern the moves that can be made and the commitments that these result in, while the rules for the beginning, for the end, and for the structure of the dialogue game remain unchanged. The revision of the move rules is based on the distribution of speech acts in the pragma-dialectical discussion model. The revision of the commitment rules is based on the felicity conditions that are associated with those speech acts.<br/
Regulation of the fibrosis and angiogenesis promoter SPARC/osteonectin in human adipose tissue by weight change, leptin, insulin, and glucose

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.OBJECTIVE: Matricellular Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC), originally discovered in bone as osteonectin, is a mediator of collagen deposition and promotes fibrosis. Adipose tissue collagen has recently been found to be linked with metabolic dysregulation. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that SPARC in human adipose tissue is influenced by glucose metabolism and adipokines. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Serum and adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from morbidly obese nondiabetic subjects undergoing bariatric surgery and lean control subjects for analysis of metabolic markers, SPARC, and various cytokines (RT-PCR). Additionally, 24 obese subjects underwent a very-low-calorie diet of 1,883 kJ (450 kcal)/day for 16 weeks and serial subcutaneous-abdominal-adipose tissue (SCAT) biopsies (weight loss: 28 +/- 3.7 kg). Another six lean subjects underwent fast-food-based hyperalimentation for 4 weeks (weight gain: 7.2 +/- 1.6 kg). Finally, visceral adipose tissue explants were cultured with recombinant leptin, insulin, and glucose, and SPARC mRNA and protein expression determined by Western blot analyses. RESULTS: SPARC expression in human adipose tissue correlated with fat mass and was higher in SCAT. Weight loss induced by very-low-calorie diet lowered SPARC expression by 33% and increased by 30% in adipose tissue of subjects gaining weight after a fast-food diet. SPARC expression was correlated with leptin independent of fat mass and correlated with homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance. In vitro experiments showed that leptin and insulin potently increased SPARC production dose dependently in visceral adipose tissue explants, while glucose decreased SPARC protein. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that SPARC expression is predominant in subcutaneous fat and its expression and secretion in adipose tissue are influenced by fat mass, leptin, insulin, and glucose.
