Femtosecond control of electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures
The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the
operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics,
causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel
advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser
pulses. Employing terahertz (10 Hz) emission spectroscopy, we
demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the
interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond
timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of
the circularly polarized light. These results open up new opportunities for
realizing spintronics in the unprecedented terahertz regime and provide new

Strong damping of phononic heat current by magnetic excitations in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2
Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and
magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu(BO) are presented.
In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the
magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of
temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with
increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat
current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from
pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations.Comment: a bit more than 4 pages, 2 figures included; minor changes to improve

Quantum melting of incommensurate domain walls in two dimensions
Quantum fluctuations of periodic domain-wall arrays in two-dimensional
incommensurate states at zero temperature are investigated using the elastic
theory in the vicinity of the commensurate-incommensurate transition point.
Both stripe and honeycomb structures of domain walls with short-range
interactions are considered. It is revealed that the stripes melt and become a
stripe liquid in a large-wall-spacing (low-density) region due to dislocations
created by quantum fluctuations. This quantum melting transition is of second
order and characterized by the three-dimensional XY universality class.
Zero-point energies of the stripe and honeycomb structures are calculated. As a
consequence of these results, phase diagrams of the domain-wall solid and
liquid phases in adsorbed atoms on graphite are discussed for various
domain-wall masses. Quantum melting of stripes in the presence of long-range
interactions that fall off as power laws is also studied. These results are
applied to incommensurate domain walls in two-dimensional adsorbed atoms on
substrates and in doped antiferromagnets, e.g. cuprates and nickelates.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Room temperature chiral magnetic skyrmion in ultrathin magnetic nanostructures
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin structures with a whirling configuration.
Their topological properties, nanometer size and the fact that they can be
moved by small current densities have opened a new paradigm for the
manipulation of magnetisation at the nanoscale. To date, chiral skyrmion
structures have been experimentally demonstrated only in bulk materials and in
epitaxial ultrathin films and under external magnetic field or at low
temperature. Here, we report on the observation of stable skyrmions in
sputtered ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO nanostructures, at room temperature and zero
applied magnetic field. We use high lateral resolution X-ray magnetic circular
dichroism microscopy to image their chiral N\'eel internal structure which we
explain as due to the large strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction
as revealed by spin wave spectroscopy measurements. Our results are
substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and numerical models, which allow
the identification of the physical mechanisms governing the size and stability

Thermal conductivity via magnetic excitations in spin-chain materials
We discuss the recent progress and the current status of experimental
investigations of spin-mediated energy transport in spin-chain and spin-ladder
materials with antiferromagnetic coupling. We briefly outline the central
results of theoretical studies on the subject but focus mainly on recent
experimental results that were obtained on materials which may be regarded as
adequate physical realizations of the idealized theoretical model systems. Some
open questions and unsettled issues are also addressed.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement.
Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services
Observation of two-magnon bound states in the two-leg ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41
Phonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption is studied at T=4 K in the spin-1/2
two-leg ladders of Ca_14-x La_x Cu_24 O_41 (x=5 and 4) for polarization of the
electrical field parallel to the legs and the rungs, respectively. Two peaks at
about 2140 and 2800 1/cm reflect van-Hove singularities in the density of
states of the strongly dispersing 2-magnon singlet bound state, and a broad
peak at about 4000 1/cm is identified with the 2-magnon continuum. Two
different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation
theory) describe the data very well for J_parallel = 1050 - 1100 1/cm and
J_parallel / J_perp = 1 - 1.1. A striking similarity of the high-energy
continuum absorption of the ladders and of the undoped high T_c cuprates is

Optical study of orbital excitations in transition-metal oxides
The orbital excitations of a series of transition-metal compounds are studied
by means of optical spectroscopy. Our aim was to identify signatures of
collective orbital excitations by comparison with experimental and theoretical
results for predominantly local crystal-field excitations. To this end, we have
studied TiOCl, RTiO3 (R=La, Sm, Y), LaMnO3, Y2BaNiO5, CaCu2O3, and K4Cu4OCl10,
ranging from early to late transition-metal ions, from t_2g to e_g systems, and
including systems in which the exchange coupling is predominantly
three-dimensional, one-dimensional or zero-dimensional. With the exception of
LaMnO3, we find orbital excitations in all compounds. We discuss the
competition between orbital fluctuations (for dominant exchange coupling) and
crystal-field splitting (for dominant coupling to the lattice). Comparison of
our experimental results with configuration-interaction cluster calculations in
general yield good agreement, demonstrating that the coupling to the lattice is
important for a quantitative description of the orbital excitations in these
compounds. However, detailed theoretical predictions for the contribution of
collective orbital modes to the optical conductivity (e.g., the line shape or
the polarization dependence) are required to decide on a possible contribution
of orbital fluctuations at low energies, in particular in case of the orbital
excitations at about 0.25 eV in RTiO3. Further calculations are called for
which take into account the exchange interactions between the orbitals and the

Medical error in the portuguese press: when patients are part of the news
Esta investigação aborda a qualidade da produção noticiosa sobre o erro médico, como um fator essencial na construção do conhecimento público sobre o tema, com o objetivo de compreender que características definem tal produção e até que ponto poderão ser explicadas pela periodicidade e orientação editorial dos jornais; que conceito de erro médico é veiculado pela produção noticiosa sobre o tema; e quais são os protagonistas no discurso jornalístico sobre o erro médico. Foram analisadas as edições de três jornais portugueses, de 2008 a 2011, resultando num corpus de 266 (4,2%) artigos, que foram classificados de acordo com as seguintes variáveis: as fontes de informação citadas (o seu estatuto e especialidade, no caso dos médicos); os temas que são tratados; as características de enquadramento da informação publicada (tom, género jornalístico; e a presença e número de fontes de informação). Pela análise de conteúdo quantitativa, apurou-se que esse tema está em crescimento, essencialmente com notícias de tom negativo e fontes de informação habitualmente identificadas. Não há evidência para afirmar que a periodicidade e a orientação editorial expliquem as variações dessas características, a não ser relativamente ao número de fontes citadas. Vigoram as notícias centradas nos resultados dos erros (mortes ou lesões), provocados por "erros de omissão" e por "erros de comissão", envolvendo uma diversidade de protagonistas: são, tal como acontece na informação sobre saúde em geral, fontes oficiais e especializadas do campo da saúde. Destacam-se os médicos e os juristas e é dado relevo aos pacientes.This research addresses the quality of news production on medical error, as an essential factor in building public knowledge on the subject, in order to understand which characteristics define the news production of medical error and to what extent can they be explained by the periodicity and editorial orientation of the newspaper; which concept of medical error is transmitted by the news production on the subject; and who are the main actors in the journalistic discourse about medical error. The editions of three Portuguese newspapers were analyzed, from 2008 to 2011, resulting in a corpus of 266 (4.2%) articles, which were classified according to the following variables: the sources of information quoted (their status and specialty, in the case of doctors); the issues covered; and characteristic framework of the published information (tone, journalistic style, and the presence and number of information sources). Through quantitative content analysis, it was found that this topic is growing, essentially with negative news and information sources usually being identified. There is no evidence to support that periodicity and editorial orientation explain the variations in these characteristics, except for the number of cited sources. News focused on the results of errors (death or injury), caused by "errors of omission" and "commission errors", prevail, involving a variety of actors: they are, such as it happens in health information, in general, official sources and experts in health. Doctors and lawyers stand out, and special attention is given to patients
Maximally Localized Wannier Functions within the FLAPW formalism
We report on the implementation of the Wannier Functions (WFs) formalism
within the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FLAPW),
suitable for bulk, film and one-dimensional geometries. The details of the
implementation, as well as results for the metallic SrVO3, ferroelectric BaTiO3
grown on SrTiO3, covalently bonded graphene and a one-dimensional Pt-chain are
given. We discuss the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the Wannier Functions
for the cases of SrVO3 and platinum. The dependency of the WFs on the choice of
the localized trial orbitals as well as the difference between the maximally
localized and "first-guess" WFs are discussed. Our results on SrVO3 and BaTiO3,
e.g. the ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3, are compared to results
