Parasitism of Early Instar Jack Pine Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) by Apanteles Spp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Glypta Fumiferanae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)
Glypta fumiferanae and two species of Apanteles parasitized 1st-4th instar jack pine bud worm (Choristoneura pinus). Apparent parasitism of budworm in four Michigan populations ranged from 10.6 to 30.9% for A. fumiferanae, 4.3-16.4% for A. morrisi, and 2.1-9.1 % for G.fumiferanae. A. morrisi probably parasitized 3rd-4th instar jack pine bud worm. Based on the results obtained, it is suggested that sampling overwintering budworm larvae is appropriate for estimating apparent parasitism by A. fumiferanae and G. fumiferanae. Sampling budworm larvae at ca. 500 degree-days (base 8.9°C) is appropriate for estimating apparent parasitism by A. morrisi
Genetic Differentiation Among Three Species of \u3ci\u3eParadosa\u3c/i\u3e (Arachnida: Lycosidae)
Allozymic variation in nine protein producing loci was examined in three species of Pardosa using starch gel electrophoresis. Allozyme frequencies showed a high degree of geographic uniformity among conspecific populations. Estimated heterozygosities for the three species ranged from 0.05 to 0.15. The experiments of LIPS 3
LIPS 3 is a member of the Living Plume Shield series of spacecraft. In each LIPS project, the plume shield, a simple sheet metal cone, was structurally stiffened, and an active satellite was then built around it. The original purpose of the plume shield was to prevent the plume from solid propellent engines, which are fired outside the atmosphere after the aerodynamic shroud is jettisoned, from reaching the primary payload. The surface of LIPS 3 facing the plume also functioned in this manner, but the anterior surfaces were unaffected, and it was there that all solar arrays, sensors, and experiments were mounted. The purpose of LIPS 3 was to provide a test bed for new space power sources. With the long delays projected for schedules of the STS and other major launch systems, it appeared that a decade might pass before long term flight data could be obtained on many new and innovative power sources. The fact that a launch scheduled for early in 1987 required a plume shield was seen as a unique opportunity to obtain some of this data in a timely manner. The LIPS 3 system, the experiments placed aboard, and the experiment data acquisition subsystem are described. Various problems were encountered during integration and after launch; those which appear to effect the accuracy of experimental results are discussed. A preliminary description is given of the accuracy of the flight experiment data
A Descriptive Study of the Population Dynamics of Adult \u3ci\u3eDiabrotica Virgifera Virgifera\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Artificially Infested Corn Fields
The influence of corn plant phenology on the dynamics of adult western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, populations was studied during 1988 and 1989 in com fields artificially infested with eggs. Fifty percent of adult emergence from the soil occurred by day 194 in 1988 and day 203 in 1989. In both years, adult emergence was synchronized with corn flowering, eggs were recovered in soil samples approximately four days after reproductive females were first observed in the population, and oviposition was essentially complete about 25 days after it began. The number of reproductive female beetle-days accumulating per m2 was similar in both years. Approximately two times as many eggs were laid in 1988 (1239 eggs 1m2) as in 1989 (590 eggs 1m2). The difference in egg density may have been caused by differences among years in the temporal synchrony of reproductive beetles with flowering corn. Daily survival rates of adults were high while corn was flowering; exhibited a gradual decline during grain filling; and decreased rapidly during the grain drying stage
Search for associations containing young stars (SACY). VI. Is multiplicity universal? Stellar multiplicity in the range 3-1000 au from adaptive-optics observations
Context. Young loose nearby associations are unique samples of close (<150
pc), young (approx 5-100 Myr) pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. A significant
number of members of these associations have been identified in the SACY
collaboration. We can use the proximity and youth of these members to
investigate key ingredients in star formation processes, such as multiplicity.
Aims. We present the statistics of identified multiple systems from 113
confirmed SACY members. We derive multiplicity frequencies, mass-ratio, and
physical separation distributions in a consistent parameter space, and compare
our results to other PMS populations and the field.
Methods. We have obtained adaptive-optics assisted near-infrared observations
with NACO (ESO/VLT) and IRCAL (Lick Observatory) for at least one epoch of all
113 SACY members. We have identified multiple systems using co-moving
proper-motion analysis and using contamination estimates. We have explored
ranges in projected separation and mass-ratio of a [3-1000 au], and q [0.1-1],
respectively.
Results. We have identified 31 multiple systems (28 binaries and 3 triples).
We derive a multiplicity frequency (MF) of MF_(3-1000au)=28.4 +4.7, -3.9% and a
triple frequency (TF) of TF_(3-1000au)=2.8 +2.5, -0.8% in the separation range
of 3-1000 au. We do not find any evidence for an increase in the MF with
primary mass. The estimated mass-ratio of our statistical sample (with
power-law index gamma=-0.04 +/- 0.14) is consistent with a flat distribution
(gamma = 0).
Conclusions. We show further similarities (but also hints of discrepancies)
between SACY and the Taurus region: flat mass-ratio distributions and
statistically similar MF and TF values. We also compared the SACY sample to the
field (in the separation range of 19-100 au), finding that the two
distributions are indistinguishable, suggesting a similar formation mechanism.Comment: 16 Pages, accepted in A&A 28 May 201
Diversity, Dilemmas and Transformation in Post-Compulsory Education: an Introduction to the Special Issue on Work Based Research
As governments recognize the central place of post-compulsory education in regenerating and modernizing the economic and social fabric of society (BIS 2008), it is appropriate for us as educational researchers to question whether this recognition beckons a different role for research in post-compulsory education. Much of this research is work based, using a broad interpretation of this term, and the majority of articles received by this journal (though the proportion published is a lower one) reflect this balance. Work based research in education poses particular challenges for the researcher and the practitioner, whether the focus is practitioner research, in which case the dilemmas can centre on potential role conflict between practitioner and researcher roles, or whether the work based research is observational – analyzing others’ professional practice, in which case the dilemmas can centre on power relations between researcher and researched, the politics of research, and ethical questions around care for participants and the degree of their involvement or non-involvement in the total research enterprise. This article reviews the prospects for work based research in post-compulsory education and introduces the articles in this special issue
Diffusive spreading and mixing of fluid monolayers
The use of ultra-thin, i.e., monolayer films plays an important role for the
emerging field of nano-fluidics. Since the dynamics of such films is governed
by the interplay between substrate-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions, the
transport of matter in nanoscale devices may be eventually efficiently
controlled by substrate engineering. For such films, the dynamics is expected
to be captured by two-dimensional lattice-gas models with interacting
particles. Using a lattice gas model and the non-linear diffusion equation
derived from the microscopic dynamics in the continuum limit, we study two
problems of relevance in the context of nano-fluidics. The first one is the
case in which along the spreading direction of a monolayer a mesoscopic-sized
obstacle is present, with a particular focus on the relaxation of the fluid
density profile upon encountering and passing the obstacle. The second one is
the mixing of two monolayers of different particle species which spread side by
side following the merger of two chemical lanes, here defined as domains of
high affinity for fluid adsorption surrounded by domains of low affinity for

Quantum atomic delocalization vs. structural disorder in amorphous silicon
Quantum effects on the atom delocalization in amorphous silicon have been
studied by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations from 30 to 800 K. The quantum
delocalization is appreciable vs. topological disorder, as seen from structural
observables such as the radial distribution function (RDF). At low
temperatures, the width of the first peak in the RDF increases by a factor of
1.5 due to quantum effects. The overall anharmonicity of the solid vibrations
at finite temperatures in amorphous silicon is clearly larger than in the
crystalline material. Low-energy vibrational modes are mainly located on

Electrical properties of a-antimony selenide
This paper reports conduction mechanism in a-\sbse over a wide range of
temperature (238K to 338K) and frequency (5Hz to 100kHz). The d.c. conductivity
measured as a function of temperature shows semiconducting behaviour with
activation energy E= 0.42 eV. Thermally induced changes in the
electrical and dielectric properties of a-\sbse have been examined. The a.c.
conductivity in the material has been explained using modified CBH model. The
band conduction and single polaron hopping is dominant above room temperature.
