Vector competence of British Culicoides species for Bluetongue virus serotype 8
The proportion of infected vectors which are able to transmit an arbovirus to a susceptible host has a significant impact on the epidemic potential of such a virus. Assessing vector competence is therefore crucial to evaluate accurately the risk posed by such a disease to any non-endemic region. The vector competence of various Culicoides species in Scotland for bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV-8) was assessed by a pad-feeding technique, and a high-throughput virus extraction and isolation procedure. This was coupled with a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify members of the Culicoides Obsoletus complex to species level. These results are compared with vector competence results of further Culicoides Obsoletus in South-East England assessed by the same method. A very low level of competence for this strain was detected in all Culicoides species tested, similar to that described for this strain in C. imicola originating from both Corsica and the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa. The implications of this are discussed in relation to future studies and also with regard to wider aspects of orbivirus transmission in the European Union. (Texte intégral
Orientation and symmetry control of inverse sphere magnetic nanoarrays by guided self-assembly
Inverse sphere shaped Ni arrays were fabricated by electrodeposition on Si through the guided self-assembly of polystyrene latex spheres in Si/SiO2 patterns. It is shown that the size commensurability of the etched tracks is critical for the long range ordering of the spheres. Moreover, noncommensurate guiding results in the reproducible periodic triangular distortion of the close packed self-assembly. Magnetoresistance measurements on the Ni arrays were performed showing room temperature anisotropic magnetoresistance of 0.85%. These results are promising for self-assembled patterned storage media and magnetoresistance devices
Living apart, losing sympathy? How neighbourhood context affects attitudes to redistribution and to welfare recipients
Rising levels of income inequality have been directly linked to rising levels of spatial segregation. In this paper, we explore whether rising segregation may in turn erode support for the redistributive policies of the welfare state, further increasing levels of inequality – a form of positive feedback. The role of the neighbourhood has been neglected in attitudes research but, building on both political geography and ‘neighbourhood effects’ literatures, we theorise that neighbourhood context may shape attitudes through the transmission of attitudes directly and through the accumulation of relevant knowledge. We test this through multilevel modelling of data from England on individual attitudes to redistribution in general and to welfare benefit recipients in particular. We show that the individual factors shaping these attitudes are quite different and that the influence of neighbourhood context also varies as a result. The findings support the idea that neighbourhood context shapes attitudes, with the knowledge accumulation mechanism likely to be the more important. Rising spatial segregation would appear to erode support for redistribution but to increase support for welfare recipients – at least in a context where the dominant media discourse presents such a stigmatising image of those on welfare benefits
Electrocortical therapy for motion sickness
Given a sufficiently provocative stimulus, almost everyone can be made motion sick, with approximately one-third experiencing significant symptoms on long bus trips, on ships, or in light aircraft.1–4 Current countermeasures are either behavioral or pharmacologic. Behavioral measures include habituation/desensitization treatment protocols5 as well as positioning the head in alignment with the direction of the gravito-inertial force and maintaining a stable horizontal reference frame.5 Pharmacologic measures include antimuscarinics, H1 antihistamines, and sympathomimetics, which all detrimentally impact upon cognitive function, rendering them inappropriate for occupational use.5 All current therapies are only partially effective

Tax avoidance as an anti-austerity issue: the progress of a protest issue through the public sphere
Theorists of left and right agree that periods of crisis are fertile times at which to precipitate change. However, protesters on the periphery of the public sphere must overcome barriers, or what Habermas called ‘sluice gates’, if their discourse is to be publicly and politically influential. This study of newspaper discourse and activity in parliament and the public sphere over a six year period takes tax justice campaigning in the UK as a case study, and in particular protest group UK Uncut’s attempt to mobilize opposition to austerity by advocating a crackdown on tax avoidance as an alternative to cuts. It finds that whilst UK Uncut successfully amplified existing arguments previously raised by experts, trade unions and the left-leaning press, austerity barely figured in debate about tax avoidance once it was picked up by other actors in the public sphere on the other side of the 'sluice gates'. The reasons for this were structural and discursive, related to the role and interests of receptive actors at the institutional centre of the public sphere, and their ability, along with the conservative press, to transform the moral framing of tax avoidance from the injustice of making the poor pay for the financial crisis through cuts, into the 'unfairness' of middle class earners paying higher taxes than wealthier individuals and corporations. The latter reifies the 'hardworking taxpayer', and implies a more instrumental and clientalistic relationship to the state, and an essentially neoliberal sense of fairness. Where neoliberal ideology was challenged, it was in social conservative terms – nationalist opposition to globalisation, framing multinational corporations as a threat to the domestic high street – rather than protesters’ social democratic challenge to market power and social injustice. This indicates how a progressive message from the periphery can be co-opted into the currently resurgent right-wing populism
Objectively measured physical activity and fat mass in a large cohort of children
Background Previous studies have been unable to characterise the association between physical activity and obesity, possibly because most relied on inaccurate measures of physical activity and obesity.
Methods and Findings We carried out a cross sectional analysis on 5,500 12-year-old children enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Total physical activity and minutes of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured using the Actigraph accelerometer. Fat mass and obesity (defined as the top decile of fat mass) were measured using the Lunar Prodigy dual x-ray emission absorptiometry scanner. We found strong negative associations between MVPA and fat mass that were unaltered after adjustment for total physical activity. We found a strong negative dose-response association between MVPA and obesity. The odds ratio for obesity in adjusted models between top and the bottom quintiles of minutes of MVPA was 0.03 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.01-0.13, p-value for trend < 0.0001) in boys and 0.36 (95% CI 0.17-0.74, p-value for trend = 0.006) in girls.
Conclusions We demonstrated a strong graded inverse association between physical activity and obesity that was stronger in boys. Our data suggest that higher intensity physical activity may be more important than total activity
A reaction-diffusion model for the growth of avascular tumor
A nutrient-limited model for avascular cancer growth including cell
proliferation, motility and death is presented. The model qualitatively
reproduces commonly observed morphologies for primary tumors, and the simulated
patterns are characterized by its gyration radius, total number of cancer
cells, and number of cells on tumor periphery. These very distinct
morphological patterns follow Gompertz growth curves, but exhibit different
scaling laws for their surfaces. Also, the simulated tumors incorporate a
spatial structure composed of a central necrotic core, an inner rim of
quiescent cells and a narrow outer shell of proliferating cells in agreement
with biological data. Finally, our results indicate that the competition for
nutrients among normal and cancer cells may be a determinant factor in

Frequency Characteristics of Visually Induced Motion Sickness

the frequency response of visually induced motion
sickness (VIMS) for oscillating linear motion in the foreand-
aft axis.
Background: Simulators, virtual environments,
and commercially available video games that create an
illusion of self-motion are often reported to induce
the symptoms seen in response to true motion. Often
this human response can be the limiting factor in the
acceptability and usability of such systems. Whereas
motion sickness in physically moving environments
is known to peak at an oscillation frequency around
0.2 Hz, it has recently been suggested that VIMS peaks
at around 0.06 Hz following the proposal that the
summed response of the visual and vestibular selfmotion
systems is maximized at this frequency. Methods: We exposed 24 participants to random
dot optical flow patterns simulating oscillating foreand-
aft motion within the frequency range of 0.025 to
1.6 Hz. Before and after each 20-min exposure, VIMS was
assessed with the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire.
Also, a standard motion sickness scale was used to rate
symptoms at 1-min intervals during each trial.
Results: VIMS peaked between 0.2 and 0.4 Hz with
a reducing effect at lower and higher frequencies.
Conclusion: The numerical prediction of the
“crossover frequency” hypothesis, and the design
guidance curve previously proposed, cannot be accepted
when the symptoms are purely visually induced.
Application: In conditions in which stationary
observers are exposed to optical flow that simulates
oscillating fore-and-aft motion, frequencies around 0.2
to 0.4 Hz should be avoided
