Dilatonic, Current-Carrying Cosmic String
We study the implications of a scalar-tensorial gravity for the metric of an
isolated self-gravitating superconducting cosmic string. These modifications
are induced by an arbitrary coupling of a massless scalar field to the usual
tensorial field in the gravitational Lagrangian. We derive the metric in the
weak-field approximation and we analyse the behaviour of light in this
spacetime. We end with some discussions.Comment: 12 pp, Latex, no figures, based on a talk given by M. E. X. Guimaraes

Vickrey Auctions for Irregular Distributions
The classic result of Bulow and Klemperer \cite{BK96} says that in a
single-item auction recruiting one more bidder and running the Vickrey auction
achieves a higher revenue than the optimal auction's revenue on the original
set of bidders, when values are drawn i.i.d. from a regular distribution. We
give a version of Bulow and Klemperer's result in settings where bidders'
values are drawn from non-i.i.d. irregular distributions. We do this by
modeling irregular distributions as some convex combination of regular
distributions. The regular distributions that constitute the irregular
distribution correspond to different population groups in the bidder
population. Drawing a bidder from this collection of population groups is
equivalent to drawing from some convex combination of these regular
distributions. We show that recruiting one extra bidder from each underlying
population group and running the Vickrey auction gives at least half of the
optimal auction's revenue on the original set of bidders
Gribov horizon and i-particles: about a toy model and the construction of physical operators
Restricting the functional integral to the Gribov region leads to a
deep modification of the behavior of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the
infrared region. For example, a gluon propagator of the Gribov type,
, can be viewed as a propagating pair of
unphysical modes, called here -particles, with complex masses . From this viewpoint, gluons are unphysical and one can see them as
being confined. We introduce a simple toy model describing how a suitable set
of composite operators can be constructed out of -particles whose
correlation functions exhibit only real branch cuts, with associated positive
spectral density. These composite operators can thus be called physical and are
the toy analogy of glueballs in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory.Comment: 35 pages, 10 .pdf figures. v2: version accepted for publication in

Photo-fission of 232Th and 238U at intermediate energies
In this work we present an analysis of the yields of fission fragments
induced by bremsstrahlung photons with endpoint energies of 50 and 3500 MeV on
232Th and 238U targets using the simulation code CRISP. A multimodal fission
option was added to this code and an extension of the calculation to the
properties of the fission products is presented. By dividing the fissioning
nuclei according to their fissionability, an approach is introduced which
accounts for the contribution of symmetric and asymmetric fission. By adopting
this procedure, it was possible to calculate the main parameters for the
fission fragment charge distribution such as the most probable charge for a
given fission product mass chain and its corresponding width parameter. Also,
it was possible to reproduce features of fragment mass distribution and
evaluate the fissility of fissioning nuclei for photon-induced fission of 232Th
and 238U.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Improve version publishe
