    Expression of Insulinlike Growth Factor (IGF) and IGF-Binding Protein Genes in Human Lung Tumor Cell Lines

    Background: The presence of multiple, low-molecular-weight, insulinlike growth factor (IGF)-binding proteins in lung tumor cell-conditioned medium and lung cancer patient serum has been recently reported. Purpose: To begin to elucidate the genetic basis for these observations, the present study examines the expression by lung tumor cell lines of three IGF-binding protein genes, namely, IGFBP-1, IGFBP-2, and IGFBP-3. Since IGF-binding proteins are thought to modulate the biologic action of the IGFs, the relationship between the expression of IGF-binding protein genes and the genes encoding IGF-I and IGF-II also has been investigated. Methods: Gene expression was studied in four small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and three non—small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines using Northern blot analysis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for IGFBP-1. Results: IGFBP-1 gene expression was detected by Northern blot analysis in one NSCLC cell line only. However, RT-PCR revealed that the IGFBP-1 gene was expressed in all four SCLC cell lines and in two of the three NSCLC lines. Northern blot analysis of IGFBP-2 gene expression demonstrated that all lung tumor cell lines expressed this gene. A low level of IGFBP-3 gene expression was detected in one SCLC cell line and in all three NSCLC cell lines. All lung tumor cell lines expressed the IGF-II gene as determined by Northern blot analysis. In marked contrast, none of the lines showed evidence of IGF-I gene expression using this method. However, RT-PCR revealed a low level of IGF-I gene expression in one SCLC and one NSCLC cell line only. Conclusions: These observations indicate 1) that IGF-binding proteins secreted by lung tumors are encoded by at least three different genes; 2) that there may be a close association between IGF-II and IGFBP-2 gene expression, such that, where there is production of IGF-II, IGFBP-2 is the principal BP; and 3) that the IGF-II gene is more widely expressed than the IGF-I gene in human lung tumor cell lines.     Continuum Surface Energy from a Lattice Model

    We investigate connections between the continuum and atomistic descriptions of deformable crystals, using certain interesting results from number theory. The energy of a deformed crystal is calculated in the context of a lattice model with general binary interactions in two dimensions. A new bond counting approach is used, which reduces the problem to the lattice point problem of number theory. The main contribution is an explicit formula for the surface energy density as a function of the deformation gradient and boundary normal. The result is valid for a large class of domains, including faceted (polygonal) shapes and regions with piecewise smooth boundaries.Comment: V. 1: 10 pages, no fig's. V 2: 23 pages, no figures.     Complete genome sequence of the Medicago microsymbiont Ensifer (Sinorhizobium) medicae strain WSM419

    Ensifer (Sinorhizobium) medicae is an effective nitrogen fixing microsymbiont of a diverse range of annual Medicago (medic) species. Strain WSM419 is an aerobic, motile, non-spore forming, Gram-negative rod isolated from a M. murex root nodule collected in Sardinia, Italy in 1981. WSM419 was manufactured commercially in Australia as an inoculant for annual medics during 1985 to 1993 due to its nitrogen fixation, saprophytic competence and acid tolerance properties. Here we describe the basic features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence, and annotation. This is the first report of a complete genome se-quence for a microsymbiont of the group of annual medic species adapted to acid soils. We reveal that its genome size is 6,817,576 bp encoding 6,518 protein-coding genes and 81 RNA only encoding genes. The genome contains a chromosome of size 3,781,904 bp and 3 plasmids of size 1,570,951 bp, 1,245,408 bp and 219,313 bp. The smallest plasmid is a fea-ture unique to this medic microsymbiont

    High-Precision Measurement of the 19Ne Half-Life and Implications for Right-Handed Weak Currents

    We report a precise determination of the 19Ne half-life to be T1/2=17.262±0.007T_{1/2} = 17.262 \pm 0.007 s. This result disagrees with the most recent precision measurements and is important for placing bounds on predicted right-handed interactions that are absent in the current Standard Model. We are able to identify and disentangle two competing systematic effects that influence the accuracy of such measurements. Our findings prompt a reassessment of results from previous high-precision lifetime measurements that used similar equipment and methods.Comment: 5 pages and 5 figures.     Skyrmion Hall Effect Revealed by Direct Time-Resolved X-Ray Microscopy

    Magnetic skyrmions are highly promising candidates for future spintronic applications such as skyrmion racetrack memories and logic devices. They exhibit exotic and complex dynamics governed by topology and are less influenced by defects, such as edge roughness, than conventionally used domain walls. In particular, their finite topological charge leads to a predicted "skyrmion Hall effect", in which current-driven skyrmions acquire a transverse velocity component analogous to charged particles in the conventional Hall effect. Here, we present nanoscale pump-probe imaging that for the first time reveals the real-time dynamics of skyrmions driven by current-induced spin orbit torque (SOT). We find that skyrmions move at a well-defined angle {\Theta}_{SH} that can exceed 30{\deg} with respect to the current flow, but in contrast to theoretical expectations, {\Theta}_{SH} increases linearly with velocity up to at least 100 m/s. We explain our observation based on internal mode excitations in combination with a field-like SOT, showing that one must go beyond the usual rigid skyrmion description to unravel the dynamics.Comment: pdf document arxiv_v1.1. 24 pages (incl. 9 figures and supplementary information

    An investigation of factors associated with the health and well-being of HIV-infected or HIV-affected older people in rural South Africa

    BackgroundDespite the severe impact of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, the health of older people aged 50+ is often overlooked owing to the dearth of data on the direct and indirect effects of HIV on older people's health status and well-being. The aim of this study was to examine correlates of health and well-being of HIV-infected older people relative to HIV-affected people in rural South Africa, defined as participants with an HIV-infected or death of an adult child due to HIV-related cause. MethodsData were collected within the Africa Centre surveillance area using instruments adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO) Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE). A stratified random sample of 422 people aged 50+ participated. We compared the health correlates of HIV-infected to HIV-affected participants using ordered logistic regressions. Health status was measured using three instruments: disability index, quality of life and composite health score. ResultsMedian age of the sample was 60 years (range 50-94). Women HIV-infected (aOR 0.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.08-0.29) and HIV-affected (aOR 0.20, 95% CI 0.08-0.50), were significantly less likely than men to be in good functional ability. Women's adjusted odds of being in good overall health state were similarly lower than men's; while income and household wealth status were stronger correlates of quality of life. HIV-infected participants reported better functional ability, quality of life and overall health state than HIV-affected participants. Discussion and Conclusions The enhanced healthcare received as part of anti-retroviral treatment as well as the considerable resources devoted to HIV care appear to benefit the overall well-being of HIV-infected older people; whereas similar resources have not been devoted to the general health needs of HIV uninfected older people. Given increasing numbers of older people, policy and programme interventions are urgently needed to holistically meet the health and well-being needs of older people beyond the HIV-related care system. <br/
