Anomalous organic magnetoresistance from competing carrier-spin-dependent interactions with localized electronic and nuclear spins
We describe a new regime for low-field magnetoresistance in organic
semiconductors, in which the spin-relaxing effects of localized nuclear spins
and electronic spins interfere. The regime is studied by the controlled
addition of localized electronic spins to a material that exhibits substantial
room-temperature magnetoresistance (\%). Although initially the
magnetoresistance is suppressed by the doping, at intermediate doping there is
a regime where the magnetoresistance is insensitive to the doping level. For
much greater doping concentrations the magnetoresistance is fully suppressed.

Abundance analyses of helium-rich subluminous B stars
The connection between helium-rich hot subdwarfs of spectral types O and B
(He-sdB) has been relatively unexplored since the latter were found in
significant numbers in the 1980's. In order to explore this connection further,
we have analysed the surface composition of six He-sdB stars, including LB
1766, LB 3229, SB 21 (= Ton-S 137 = BPS 29503-0009), BPS 22940-0009, BPS
29496-0010, and BPS 22956-0094. Opacity-sampled line-blanketed model
atmospheres have been used to derive atmospheric properties and elemental
abundances. All the stars are moderately metal-poor compared with the Sun
([Fe/H] ~ -0.5). Four stars are nitrogen-rich, two of these are carbon-rich,
and at least four appear to be neon-rich. The data are insufficient to rule out
binarity in any of the sample. The surface composition and locus of the N-rich
He-sdBs are currently best explained by the merger of two helium white dwarfs,
or possibly by the merger of a helium white dwarf with a post-sdB white dwarf.
C-rich He-sdBs require further investigation.Comment: Accepted 2010 July
Day of the week effect on foreign exchange market volatility: Evidence from Turkey

The empirical evidence from Turkey presented here suggests that Thursdays are associated with higher and Mondays with lower depreciation rates compared to those of Wednesdays. A Comparative Numerical Study on GEM, MHSP and MSGC
In this work, we have tried to develop a detailed understanding of the
physical processes occurring in those variants of Micro Pattern Gas Detectors
(MPGDs) that share micro hole and micro strip geometry, like GEM, MHSP and MSGC
etc. Some of the important and fundamental characteristics of these detectors
such as gain, transparency, efficiency and their operational dependence on
different device parameters have been estimated following detailed numerical
simulation of the detector dynamics. We have used a relatively new simulation
framework developed especially for the MPGDs that combines packages such as
GARFIELD, neBEM, MAGBOLTZ and HEED. The results compare closely with the
available experimental data. This suggests the efficacy of the framework to
model the intricacies of these micro-structured detectors in addition to
providing insight into their inherent complex dynamical processes
Learning Context on a Humanoid Robot using Incremental Latent Dirichlet Allocation
In this article, we formalize and model context in terms of a set of concepts grounded in the sensorimotor interactions of a robot. The concepts are modeled as a web using Markov Random Field, inspired from the concept web hypothesis for representing concepts in humans. On this concept web, we treat context as a latent variable of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), which is a widely-used method in computational linguistics for modeling topics in texts. We extend the standard LDA method in order to make it incremental so that (i) it does not re-learn everything from scratch given new interactions (i.e., it is online) and (ii) it can discover and add a new context into its model when necessary. We demonstrate on the iCub platform that, partly owing to modeling context on top of the concept web, our approach is adaptive, online and robust: It is adaptive and online since it can learn and discover a new context from new interactions. It is robust since it is not affected by irrelevant stimuli and it can discover contexts after a few interactions only. Resuscitation and quantification of stressed Escherichia coli K12 NCTC8797 in water samples
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact on numbers of using different media for the enumeration of Escherichia coli subjected to stress, and to evaluate the use of different resuscitation methods on bacterial numbers. E. coli was subjected to heat stress by exposure to 55 °C for 1 h or to light-induced oxidative stress by exposure to artificial light for up to 8 h in the presence of methylene blue. In both cases, the bacterial counts on selective media were below the limits of detection whereas on non-selective media colonies were still produced. After resuscitation in non-selective media, using a multi-well MPN resuscitation method or resuscitation on membrane filters, the bacterial counts on selective media matched those on non-selective media. Heat and light stress can affect the ability of E. coli to grow on selective media essential for the enumeration as indicator bacteria. A resuscitation method is essential for the recovery of these stressed bacteria in order to avoid underestimation of indicator bacteria numbers in water. There was no difference in resuscitation efficiency using the membrane filter and multi-well MPN methods. This study emphasises the need to use a resuscitation method if the numbers of indicator bacteria in water samples are not to be underestimated. False-negative results in the analysis of drinking water or natural bathing waters could have profound health effects

We use a concept web representation of the perceptions of the robot as a basis for context analysis. The detected contexts of the scene can be used for several cognitive problems. Exploring the performance of the spectrometer prisma in heavy zirconium and xenon mass regions
We present results from two recent runs which illustrate the performance of the PRISMA spectrometer in the proximity of the upper limit of its operational interval, namely 96Zr + 124Sn at Elab = 500 MeV and 136Xe + 208Pb at Elab = 930 MeV.
