Isometric strength of the knee musculature, Centre-Of-Pressure (COP) based measures of balance, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 10 m walk test, and the Subjective Index of Physical and Social Out come (SIPSO), were recorded at baseline, post-intervention, and after twelve weeks (follow-up). Exercise instructors delivered training once a week in a group format at a community centre. Significant improvement was noted in the BBS (p < 0.002), and 10 m walk speed (p = 0.03) post intervention which remained unchanged at follow-up. Total SIPSO score improved significantly post-intervention (p = 0.044). No other significant differences and no adverse effects were observed. It is possible that functional training provided more opportunity for the improvement of dynamic aspects of balance control that could be captured by the BBS but not with the traditional measures of balance using COP data. Results also suggest positive effects on the level of participation, and lack of association between measures of impairment and activity. Community based functional training could be effective and used to extend access to rehabilitation services beyond the acute and sub-acute stages after stroke.London Borough of Hillingdo
Instantons in the Double-Tensor Multiplet
The double-tensor multiplet naturally appears in type IIB superstring
compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and is dual to the universal
hypermultiplet. We revisit the calculation of instanton corrections to the
low-energy effective action, in the supergravity approximation. We derive a
Bogomolny'i bound for the double-tensor multiplet and find new instanton
solutions saturating the bound. They are characterized by the topological
charges and the asymptotic values of the scalar fields in the double-tensor
multiplet.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX2e with amsmath.sty; v2: minor change
Properties of Chiral Wilson Loops
We study a class of Wilson Loops in N =4, D=4 Yang-Mills theory belonging to
the chiral ring of a N=2, d=1 subalgebra. We show that the expectation value of
these loops is independent of their shape. Using properties of the chiral ring,
we also show that the expectation value is identically 1. We find the same
result for chiral loops in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three,
five and six dimensions. In seven dimensions, a generalized Konishi anomaly
gives an equation for chiral loops which closely resembles the loop equations
of the three dimensional Chern-Simons theory.Comment: 15 pages, two pictures, some references adde
Superform formulation for vector-tensor multiplets in conformal supergravity
The recent papers arXiv:1110.0971 and arXiv:1201.5431 have provided a
superfield description for vector-tensor multiplets and their Chern-Simons
couplings in 4D N = 2 conformal supergravity. Here we develop a superform
formulation for these theories. Furthermore an alternative means of gauging the
central charge is given, making use of a deformed vector multiplet, which may
be thought of as a variant vector-tensor multiplet. Its Chern-Simons couplings
to additional vector multiplets are also constructed. This multiplet together
with its Chern-Simons couplings are new results not considered by de Wit et al.

Plasma instability and amplification of electromagnetic waves in low-dimensional electron systems
A general electrodynamic theory of a grating coupled two dimensional electron
system (2DES) is developed. The 2DES is treated quantum mechanically, the
grating is considered as a periodic system of thin metal strips or as an array
of quantum wires, and the interaction of collective (plasma) excitations in the
system with electromagnetic field is treated within the classical
electrodynamics. It is assumed that a dc current flows in the 2DES. We consider
a propagation of an electromagnetic wave through the structure, and obtain
analytic dependencies of the transmission, reflection, absorption and emission
coefficients on the frequency of light, drift velocity of 2D electrons, and
other physical and geometrical parameters of the system. If the drift velocity
of 2D electrons exceeds a threshold value, a current-driven plasma instability
is developed in the system, and an incident far infrared radiation is
amplified. We show that in the structure with a quantum wire grating the
threshold velocity of the amplification can be essentially reduced, as compared
to the commonly employed metal grating, down to experimentally achievable
values. Physically this is due to a considerable enhancement of the grating
coupler efficiency because of the resonant interaction of plasma modes in the
2DES and in the grating. We show that tunable far infrared emitters, amplifiers
and generators can thus be created at realistic parameters of modern
semiconductor heterostructures.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
