    Extending the theory of Owicki and Gries with a logic of progress

    This paper describes a logic of progress for concurrent programs. The logic is based on that of UNITY, molded to fit a sequential programming model. Integration of the two is achieved by using auxiliary variables in a systematic way that incorporates program counters into the program text. The rules for progress in UNITY are then modified to suit this new system. This modification is however subtle enough to allow the theory of Owicki and Gries to be used without change

    Neutron-Unbound Excited States of 23N

    Neutron unbound states in 23N were populated via proton knockout from an 83.4 MeV/nucleon 24O beam on a liquid deuterium target. The two-body decay energy displays two peaks at E1∼100keV and E2∼1MeV with respect to the neutron separation energy. The data are consistent with shell model calculations predicting resonances at excitation energies of ∼3.6MeV and ∼4.5MeV. The selectivity of the reaction implies that these states correspond to the first and second 3/2− states. The energy of the first state is about 1.3 MeV lower than the first excited 2+ in 24O. This decrease is largely due to coupling with the πp−13/2 hole along with a small reduction of the N=16 shell gap in 23N

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We report GaAs-based high-speed, resonant-cavity-enhanced, Schottky barrier internal photoemissionphotodiodes operating at 1.3 μm. The devices were fabricated by using a microwave-compatible fabrication process. Resonance of the cavity was tuned to 1.3 μm and a nine-fold enhancement was achieved in quantum efficiency. The photodiode had an experimental setup limited temporal response of 16 ps, corresponding to a 3 dB bandwidth of 20 GHz. © 2000 American Institute of Physic

    Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are used in numerous applications and have high likelihood of entering engineered and natural environmental systems. Careful assessment of the interaction of these NPs with bacteria, particularly biofilm bacteria, is necessary. This perspective discusses mechanisms of NP interaction with bacteria and identifies challenges in understanding NP-biofilm interaction, considering fundamental material attributes and inherent complexities of biofilm structure. The current literature is reviewed, both for planktonic bacteria and biofilms; future challenges and complexities are identified, both in light of the literature and a dataset on the toxicity of silver NPs toward planktonic and biofilm bacteria. This perspective aims to highlight the complexities in such studies and emphasizes the needs for systematic evaluation of NP-biofilm interaction

    Journal ArticleIn these remarks I would like to elaborate what I understand to be the thrust of Professor Jordan's paper, and to introduce and relate to his work a notion of lived experience, which is suggested to me by his material throughout. Professor Jordan claims that the phenomena investigated by the moral sciences imply fields of meaning quite different from the meaning found in material objects of mere sense perception. Thus there is in fact a divergence of focus in the methods and the subject matter of the moral and natural sciences
