    Negative ions formed in N<sub>2</sub>/CH<sub>4</sub>/Ar discharge – a simulation of Titan's atmosphere chemistry

    The formation of negative ions produced in a negative point-to-plane corona discharge fed by a Ar/N2//CH4/ gas mixture has been studied using mass spectrometry. The measurements were carried out in flowing regime at ambient temperature and a reduced pressure of 460 mbar. The CN ? anion has been found to be the most dominant negative ion in the discharge and is believed to be the precursor of heavier negative ions such as C3/N ? and C5/N ? . The most likely pathway for the formation of such molecular anions is H-loss dissociative electron attachment to HCN, H3/CN and H5/CN formed in the discharge. These same anions have been detected in Titan's atmosphere and the present experiments may provide some novel insights into the chemical and physical mechanisms prevalent in Titan's atmosphere and hence assist in the interpretation of results from the Cassini Huygens space mission

    601 metal-on-metal total hip replacements with 36 mm heads a 5 minimum year follow up: Levels of ARMD remain low despite a comprehensive screening program

    BACKGROUND: We conducted a retrospective study to assess the clinical outcome, failure rate, and reason for failure of a large consecutive series of 36 mm MoM Corail/Pinnacle total hip replacements (THRs). METHODS: Between 2006 and 2011, 601 consecutive 36 mm MoM THRs were performed (585 patients). Patients were followed according to the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidelines. All patients were accounted for and 469 patients (78%) were clinically and radiographically assessed. 328 females and 141 males with a median age of 73 (range 36-94 years) and a median follow up of 7.2 years (range 5.2-9.7 years) were followed. Clinical data included blood cobalt and chromium, Oxford Hip Score (OHS), plain radiograph, ultrasound of hip and intra-operative findings in those patients who had revision surgery. RESULTS: 56 patients died of causes unrelated to their hip replacement. The mean survivorship of the implant was 92.8% (range 91.6-94%, 95% CI) at a median time to follow up of 84 months (62-113 months). The functional outcome was good with a median OHS of 38 out of 48 (23-44). The dislocation rate was 0.99%, with all these 6 cases requiring revision. 476 patients had blood tests. 100 patients (21%) had elevated levels of either cobalt above MHRA guidelines of 7 parts per billion (120 and 135 nmol/L respectively for cobalt and chromium). Cobalt was elevated independently of chromium in 75% of the cases (but never vice versa). The mean cup inclination angle was 42°. Each incremental stem size increase resulted in a decrease in cobalt by 11 nmol/L. The most common reason for revision was adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD) (12 cases). CONCLUSION: This paper is the largest and longest follow up of 36 mm MoM THRs. Using the MHRA guidelines for follow up, the revision rates of this cohort has remained low compared to other studies, but unacceptably higher than that of other bearing surfaces.     Exploratory analysis of resource demand and the environmental footprint of future aquaculture development using Life Cycle Assessment

    Increases in fish demand in the coming decades are projected to be largely met by growth of aquaculture. However, increased aquaculture production is linked to higher demand for natural resources and energy as well as emissions to the environment. This paper explores the use of Life Cycle Assessment to improve knowledge of potential environmental impacts of future aquaculture growth. Different scenarios of future aquaculture development are taken into account in calculating the life cycle environmental impacts. The environmental impact assessments were built on Food and Agriculture Organization statistics in terms of production volume of different species, whereas the inputs and outputs associated with aquaculture production systems were sourced from the literature. The matrix of input-output databases was established through the Blue Frontiers study

    Phytoplankton population dynamics are controlled by the relative rather than absolute timescales of mixing, growth, and loss processes such as sedimentation, grazing, and so on.     Survey of pickup ion signatures in the vicinity of Titan using CAPS/IMS

    Pickup ion detection at Titan is challenging because ion cyclotron waves are rarely detected in the vicinity of the moon. In this work, signatures left by freshly produced pickup heavy ions (m/q ∼ 16 to m/q ∼ 28) as detected in the plasma data by the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer/Ion Mass Spectrometer (CAPS/IMS) instrument on board Cassini are analyzed. In order to discern whether these correspond to ions of exospheric origin, one of the flybys during which the reported signatures were observed is investigated in detail. For this purpose, ion composition data from time-of-flight measurements and test particle simulations to constrain the ions' origin are used. After being validated, the detection method is applied to all the flybys for which the CAPS/IMS instrument gathered valid data, constraining the region around the moon where the signatures are observed. The results reveal an escape region located in the anti-Saturn direction as expected from the nominal corotation electric field direction. These findings provide new constraints for the area of freshly produced pickup ion escape, giving an approximate escape rate of inline image ions· s−1

    Evaluation of Skylab (EREP) data for forest and rangeland surveys

    The author has identified the following significant results. Four widely separated sites (near Augusta, Georgia; Lead, South Dakota; Manitou, Colorado; and Redding, California) were selected as typical sites for forest inventory, forest stress, rangeland inventory, and atmospheric and solar measurements, respectively. Results indicated that Skylab S190B color photography is good for classification of Level 1 forest and nonforest land (90 to 95 percent correct) and could be used as a data base for sampling by small and medium scale photography using regression techniques. The accuracy of Level 2 forest and nonforest classes, however, varied from fair to poor. Results of plant community classification tests indicate that both visual and microdensitometric techniques can separate deciduous, conifirous, and grassland classes to the region level in the Ecoclass hierarchical classification system. There was no consistency in classifying tree categories at the series level by visual photointerpretation. The relationship between ground measurements and large scale photo measurements of foliar cover had a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.75.     Magnetic fields and differential rotation on the pre-main sequence I: The early-G star HD 141943 - brightness and magnetic topologies

    Spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations of the pre-main sequence early-G star HD 141943 were obtained at four observing epochs (in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010). The observations were undertaken at the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope using the UCLES echelle spectrograph and the SEMPOL spectropolarimeter visitor instrument. Brightness and surface magnetic field topologies were reconstructed for the star using the technique of least-squares deconvolution to increase the signal-to-noise of the data. The reconstructed brightness maps show that HD 141943 had a weak polar spot and a significant amount of low latitude features, with little change in the latitude distribution of the spots over the 4 years of observations. The surface magnetic field was reconstructed at three of the epochs from a high order (l <= 30) spherical harmonic expansion of the spectropolarimetric observations. The reconstructed magnetic topologies show that in 2007 and 2010 the surface magnetic field was reasonably balanced between poloidal and toroidal components. However we find tentative evidence of a change in the poloidal/toroidal ratio in 2009 with the poloidal component becoming more dominant. At all epochs the radial magnetic field is predominantly non-axisymmetric while the azimuthal field is predominantly axisymmetric with a ring of positive azimuthal field around the pole similar to that seen on other active stars.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted by MNRA
