    Melt-processed bulk superconductors: Fabrication and characterization for power and space applications

    Melt-process bulk superconducting materials based on variations on the base YBa2Cu3O(x) were produced in a variety of shapes and forms. Very high values of both zero-field and high-field magnetization were observed. These are useful for levitation and power applications. Magnetic measurements show that the effects of field direction and intensity, temperature and time are consistent with an aligned grain structure with multiple pinning sites and with models of thermally activated flux motion

    High-Tip-Speed, Low-Loading Transonic Fan Stage. Part 1: Aerodynamic and Mechanical Design

    A high-tip-speed, low-loading transonic fan stage was designed to deliver an overall pressure ratio of 1.5 with an adiabatic efficiency of 86 percent. The design flow per unit annulus area is 42.0 pounds per square foot. The fan features a hub/tip ratio of 0.46, a tip diameter of 28.74 in. and operates at a design tip speed of 1600 fps. For these design conditions, the rotor blade tip region operates with supersonic inlet and supersonic discharge relative velocities. A sophisticated quasi-three-dimensional characteristic section design procedure was used for the all-supersonic sections and the inlet of the midspan transonic sections. For regions where the relative outlet velocities are supersonic, the blade operates with weak oblique shocks only

    The professional socialisation of headteachers in England: Further findings from the National Headteacher Survey

    This paper reports on a further investigation of data first accumulated through a national survey of headteachers conducted in 1999. The survey was conducted by means of a self-completion postal questionnaire with a stratified random sample of 10 per cent serving headteachers in England, totalling 2285 potential respondents in all. Completed returns were received from 1405 headteachers, an overall response rate of 62 per cent. Initial findings from the survey have subsequently been published as conference papers and journal articles (Male, 2000; Male and Hvizdak, 2000; Male and Male, 2001, Male 2001). The survey primarily sought to establish the respondents’ perceived state of readiness for the demands of the headteacher position in a number of job categories and competencies. A secondary aim was to allow respondents to attribute reasons to their state of readiness where they perceived it to be adequate or better. A third aim was to seek opinion from the respondents as to what provision and support would be beneficial to headteachers in their first two years in post. This further investigation has been commissioned by the National College for School Leadership and has been conducted by the original author, aided by two serving headteachers who have been appointed as research associates by the college during the period January to July of 2002

    Molecular Characterization of Pediatric Restrictive Cardiomyopathy from Integrative Genomics

    Pediatric restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a genetically heterogeneous heart disease with limited therapeutic options. RCM cases are largely idiopathic; however, even within families with a known genetic cause for cardiomyopathy, there is striking variability in disease severity. Although accumulating evidence implicates both gene expression and alternative splicing in development of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), there have been no detailed molecular characterizations of underlying pathways dysregulated in RCM. RNA-Seq on a cohort of pediatric RCM patients compared to other forms of adult cardiomyopathy and controls identified transcriptional differences highly common to the cardiomyopathies, as well as those unique to RCM. Transcripts selectively induced in RCM include many known and novel G-protein coupled receptors linked to calcium handling and contractile regulation. In-depth comparisons of alternative splicing revealed splicing events shared among cardiomyopathy subtypes, as well as those linked solely to RCM. Genes identified with altered alternative splicing implicate RBM20, a DCM splicing factor, as a potential mediator of alternative splicing in RCM. We present the first comprehensive report on molecular pathways dysregulated in pediatric RCM including unique/shared pathways identified compared to other cardiomyopathy subtypes and demonstrate that disruption of alternative splicing patterns in pediatric RCM occurs in the inverse direction as DCM

    Condensation of microturbulence-generated shear flows into global modes

    In full flux-surface computer studies of tokamak edge turbulence, a spectrum of shear flows is found to control the turbulence level and not just the conventional (0,0)-mode flows. Flux tube domains too small for the large poloidal scale lengths of the continuous spectrum tend to overestimate the flows, and thus underestimate the transport. It is shown analytically and numerically that under certain conditions dominant (0,0)-mode flows independent of the domain size develop, essentially through Bose-Einstein condensation of the shear flows.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
