Workshop proceedings: Information Systems for Space Astrophysics in the 21st Century, volume 1
The Astrophysical Information Systems Workshop was one of the three Integrated Technology Planning workshops. Its objectives were to develop an understanding of future mission requirements for information systems, the potential role of technology in meeting these requirements, and the areas in which NASA investment might have the greatest impact. Workshop participants were briefed on the astrophysical mission set with an emphasis on those missions that drive information systems technology, the existing NASA space-science operations infrastructure, and the ongoing and planned NASA information systems technology programs. Program plans and recommendations were prepared in five technical areas: Mission Planning and Operations; Space-Borne Data Processing; Space-to-Earth Communications; Science Data Systems; and Data Analysis, Integration, and Visualization
Automation and hypermedia technology applications
This paper represents a progress report on HyLite (Hypermedia Library technology): a research and development activity to produce a versatile system as part of NASA's technology thrusts in automation, information sciences, and communications. HyLite can be used as a system or tool to facilitate the creation and maintenance of large distributed electronic libraries. The contents of such a library may be software components, hardware parts or designs, scientific data sets or databases, configuration management information, etc. Proliferation of computer use has made the diversity and quantity of information too large for any single user to sort, process, and utilize effectively. In response to this information deluge, we have created HyLite to enable the user to process relevant information into a more efficient organization for presentation, retrieval, and readability. To accomplish this end, we have incorporated various AI techniques into the HyLite hypermedia engine to facilitate parameters and properties of the system. The proposed techniques include intelligent searching tools for the libraries, intelligent retrievals, and navigational assistance based on user histories. HyLite itself is based on an earlier project, the Encyclopedia of Software Components (ESC) which used hypermedia to facilitate and encourage software reuse
What do regressions estimate? Working paper series--08-04
Along with the readily available computer software that performs least squares regressions, comes the proliferation of misuse and misinterpretation of the regression results. We illustrate in the paper that the solutions to the intercept and slope coefficients in a simple linear regression model are dependent on the definition of the loss function used in the optimization problem. Likewise, there is not a universal population linear regression line. If a squared error loss function is used, the population regression line turns out to be the conditional mean function while an absolute loss function yields the conditional median. When the asymmetric loss function defined in Koenker and Bassett (1978) is used, the population regression line becomes the conditional quantile function. Therefore, what the sample regression is estimating and how the estimated intercept and slope coefficients should be interpreted are dependent upon what loss function is being used in the optimization problem. We illustrated a few mistakes commonly made in interpreting the least squares regression results and discuss some potential misuses of the least square regressions. By pointing out these specific mistakes, we hope that practitioners and educators will have a better understanding of what exactly we are estimating when we perform a least squares regression or any regression for that matter
Selective Equal-Spin Andreev Reflections Induced by Majorana Fermions
In this work, we find that Majorana fermions induce selective equal spin
Andreev reflections (SESARs), in which incoming electrons with certain spin
polarization in the lead are reflected as counter propagating holes with the
same spin. The spin polarization direction of the electrons of this Andreev
reflected channel is selected by the Majorana fermions. Moreover, electrons
with opposite spin polarization are always reflected as electrons with
unchanged spin. As a result, the charge current in the lead is spin-polarized.
Therefore, a topological superconductor which supports Majorana fermions can be
used as a novel device to create fully spin-polarized currents in paramagnetic
leads. We point out that SESARs can also be used to detect Majorana fermions in
