PoGOLite - A High Sensitivity Balloon-Borne Soft Gamma-ray Polarimeter
We describe a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGOLite) capable of detecting
10% polarisation from 200mCrab point-like sources between 25 and 80keV in one 6
hour flight. Polarisation measurements in the soft gamma-ray band are expected
to provide a powerful probe into high-energy emission mechanisms as well as the
distribution of magnetic fields, radiation fields and interstellar matter. At
present, only exploratory polarisation measurements have been carried out in
the soft gamma-ray band. Reduction of the large background produced by
cosmic-ray particles has been the biggest challenge. PoGOLite uses Compton
scattering and photo-absorption in an array of 217 well-type phoswich detector
cells made of plastic and BGO scintillators surrounded by a BGO anticoincidence
shield and a thick polyethylene neutron shield. The narrow FOV (1.25msr)
obtained with well-type phoswich detector technology and the use of thick
background shields enhance the detected S/N ratio. Event selections based on
recorded phototube waveforms and Compton kinematics reduce the background to
that expected for a 40-100mCrab source between 25 and 50keV. A 6 hour
observation on the Crab will differentiate between the Polar Cap/Slot Gap,
Outer Gap, and Caustic models with greater than 5 sigma; and also cleanly
identify the Compton reflection component in the Cygnus X-1 hard state. The
first flight is planned for 2010 and long-duration flights from Sweden to

Exploring the relationship between customer participation and online brand community and consumer loyalty
The popularity of online brand communities has maintained the close link between consumers and brands and it encourages consumers to actively participate in online platforms. From this emerges intentions to achieve social and functional goals, leading to the question: How is loyalty affected by online participation? Based on a constructivist perspective, empirical data were generated through in-depth interviews to explore millennial’s level of participation in online communities and the extent to which it affects their loyalty to the brand and the community in the fashion industry. The study provides a conceptual framework that links a set of online participation characteristics contingent to different participatory motives. The study proposed four main customer participatory behavioural traits (brand identification, interactivity, media valence and perceived community sentiment) linked to consumers’ perception towards a brand in the fashion sector. The main findings reveal how the four categories impact the level of customer loyalty. These key categories are explored to create a framework for future research in this area, and further contribute to the field of online brand engagement, particularly in the fashion industry

Motivation and incentives of rural maternal and neonatal health care providers: a comparison of qualitative findings from Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania.
In Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania strong efforts are being made to improve the quality of maternal and neonatal health (MNH) care. However, progress is impeded by challenges, especially in the area of human resources. All three countries are striving not only to scale up the number of available health staff, but also to improve performance by raising skill levels and enhancing provider motivation. In-depth interviews were used to explore MNH provider views about motivation and incentives at primary care level in rural Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania. Interviews were held with 25 MNH providers, 8 facility and district managers, and 2 policy-makers in each country. Across the three countries some differences were found in the reasons why people became health workers. Commitment to remaining a health worker was generally high. The readiness to remain at a rural facility was far less, although in all settings there were some providers that were willing to stay. In Burkina Faso it appeared to be particularly difficult to recruit female MNH providers to rural areas. There were indications that MNH providers in all the settings sometimes failed to treat their patients well. This was shown to be interlinked with differences in how the term 'motivation' was understood, and in the views held about remuneration and the status of rural health work. Job satisfaction was shown to be quite high, and was particularly linked to community appreciation. With some important exceptions, there was a strong level of agreement regarding the financial and non-financial incentives that were suggested by these providers, but there were clear country preferences as to whether incentives should be for individuals or teams. Understandings of the terms and concepts pertaining to motivation differed between the three countries. The findings from Burkina Faso underline the importance of gender-sensitive health workforce planning. The training that all levels of MNH providers receive in professional ethics, and the way this is reinforced in practice require closer attention. The differences in the findings across the three settings underscore the importance of in-depth country-level research to tailor the development of incentives schemes
Open Questions in GRB Physics
Open questions in GRB physics are summarized as of 2011, including
classification, progenitor, central engine, ejecta composition, energy
dissipation and particle acceleration mechanism, radiation mechanism, long term
engine activity, external shock afterglow physics, origin of high energy
emission, and cosmological setting. Prospects of addressing some of these

Cosmology at Low Frequencies: The 21 cm Transition and the High-Redshift Universe
Observations of the high-redshift Universe with the 21 cm hyperfine line of
neutral hydrogen promise to open an entirely new window onto the early phases
of cosmic structure formation. Here we review the physics of the 21 cm
transition, focusing on processes relevant at high redshifts, and describe the
insights to be gained from such observations. These include measuring the
matter power spectrum at z~50, observing the formation of the cosmic web and
the first luminous sources, and mapping the reionization of the intergalactic
medium. The epoch of reionization is of particular interest, because large HII
regions will seed substantial fluctuations in the 21 cm background. We also
discuss the experimental challenges involved in detecting this signal, with an
emphasis on the Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. These increase rapidly
toward low frequencies and are especially severe for the highest redshift
applications. Assuming that these difficulties can be overcome, the redshifted
21 cm line will offer unique insight into the high-redshift Universe,
complementing other probes but providing the only direct, three-dimensional

The E12 experience: Students’ perceptions of a widening participation scheme
Engaging students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in higher education is an ongoing issue in the tertiary education sector. Despite schemes to widen participation, low SES entry rates remain below 20% in Australia. Various factors have been posited for the low rates of success and strategies aimed at universities, high schools and individual students have been suggested. The literature on transition to university has informed a student-centred approach and the need to acknowledge dimensions of cultural capital. Resources to address difficulties in transition have been suggested. In this paper we report on qualitative research exploring the perspective of students who entered a Faculty of Health Sciences via a widening participation scheme. Our findings indicate that while transition strategies must be in place, the provision of ongoing material resources is also an integral factor in supporting student
Muon Collider Design
Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages
when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be
regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV high
luminosity \mu^+ \mu^- colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity
demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders,
starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and
proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring.
Detector background, polarization, and nonstandard operating conditions are

Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
