PLANT PATHOLOGYA total of nine isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri infecting chickpea were collected from major chickpea growing areas of Bangladesh and were characterized in terms of cultural, morphological, physiological characteristics and pathogenicity. The isolates varied significantly in their cultural, morphological and physiological traits, i.e. colony color, shape, margin and texture; mycelial radial growth and spore production. Laboratory studies were conducted to study the effect of different culture media, pH and temperature levels on mycelial growth and sporulation of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri. Mycelial radial growth and sporulation of F. oxysporum was maximum for all the isolates at 25 °C after seven days of inoculation, which was reduced drastically below 15°C and above 35 °C. No growth and sporulation was observed at 5 °C temperature for all the isolates. The most suitable pH level for growth and sporulation of the fungus was at pH 6.0. The fungus grew well on oat meal agar medium among seven culture media tested. No sporulation observed on WA medium. The highest number of macro spores (3.27 x 105 ml-1) and micro spores (4.06 x 105 ml-1) were produced PDA. Among the nine tested isolates, only one isolate (FOC-1) found to be highly virulent (HV) type on reaction on chickpea variety BARI Chola – 1
An Analysis of the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) among Aged People in Rural Areas of Western Odisha, India
Background: A decline in fertility rate and expansion in life span has resulted in the growth in the percentage of aged populations in the whole world. India and Odisha are no exceptions. Objectives: The objective of the present paper is to find out the incidence of functional ability/inability among the aged people of the rural areas of western Odisha of India. Materials and Methods: Katz Scale of ADL was used to assess the functional ability of elderly people. Six activities of daily living such as (Bathing, Dressing, Toilet, Mobility, Continence, and Feeding) were analyzed as per age and sex of the samples. Results: Of all the samples (1992), 98.5 percent are physically independent and only 1.4 percent are physically dependent. Out of 945 female elderly people, 931 (98.1%) are independent and out of 1047 male elderly people 1033 (98.6%) are independent. The physical dependency of females is more with a ?2 – value of 0.075 and p – value of 0.466. The age group wise ?2 – value is 20.899 (3) and p – value of 0.001. Conclusion: Lesser physical dependency is found among the elderly people in rural areas. An increase in dependency is seen with the increase in age
HOSPITAL-BASED PROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY OF COMPLICATIONS IN CHILDREN WITH SNAKE BITE IN A TERTIARY CARE CENTER.
Objective:
We attempted to study the complications of snake bites so that early recognition and institution of proper treatment can save the lives of many children.
Methods:
This Hospital based prospective observational study was conducted in Srirama Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack from December 2020 to November 2022 among children aged 1-14 years with a history of snake bites admitted to our ward, through the outpatient department and emergency department.
Results:
Our study showed, that snake bite cases were predominantly seen in 8 -11 years of age with a male: female ratio of 2.9:1, as these age group children are actively engaged in outdoor games like playing near riverside and bushy areas in playgrounds. Acute markers as depicted by serum LDH, D-Dimer, Fibrinogen, and Ferritin were significantly high among haematotoxic cases due to secondary infection and correlated with cellulitis and necrotic ulcers which accounted for 57.1%.
Conclusion:
Healthcare providers should be made aware that a history of circumstantial evidence such as sleeping on the floor at night with sudden onset of pain abdomen, vomiting, and inability to keep the eyes open should prompt neurotoxic snake bite and ASV as well as Atropine, Neostigmine should be started.
Recommendation:
We recommend spreading more awareness, people should be counseled to use toilets more, to use mosquito nets while sleeping, avoid sleeping on the floor
