When product diversification influences life cycle impact assessment: A case study of canned anchovy
The anchovy canning industry is one of the most important economic resources of the Cantabria region in Spain. However, environmental, economic and social problems over the past years have forced companies to apply marketing strategies, develop product diversification, create new products and introduce them in new “green markets”. Launching Cantabrian canned anchovies into more sustainable markets requires measuring the environmental performance using Product Category Rules (PCRs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs and PCRS include the environmental profile of a range of similar products, such as all of the available canned anchovy products. The great variety of anchovy canned products depends on three process variables: the origin of the anchovy (Cantabria, Argentina and Chile or Peru), the type of oil (refined olive oil, extra virgin olive oil and sunflower oil) and the packaging (aluminum, tinplate, glass and plastic).
This work aims to assess the environmental impact from cradle to grave of canned anchovies in oil using the life cycle assessment methodology (LCA). Moreover, the paper evaluates the influence of the above-mentioned three product variables in the LCA results. The results show that out of all of the alternatives, Chilean and Peruvian anchovies have the highest environmental burdens due to the transportation by ship. The production of anchovies in sunflower oil is a less environmentally friendly oil process due to the low yield per hectare of sunflower cultivation. Finally, the use of aluminum as the packaging material has the largest environmental impact out of almost all of the impact categories. Moreover, because the LCA results can be significantly affected by the allocation procedure, a sensitivity analysis comparing system expansion, mass and economic allocation is performed. The toxicity of diquat, endothall, and fluridone to the early life stages of fish
ABSTRACT While most aquatic herbicides have undergone some toxicity testing for effects on non-target aquatic organisms, little of this testing has been conducted on early life stages of gamefish found in lakes undergoing treatment. Commercial formulations of diquat, endothall, and fluridone were selected for acute toxicity testing using very early life stages of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu). In addition, the rates of diquat photodegradation and uptake by sediment were determined. These results were used to predict diquat concentrations in lakes of various depths. The results of the toxicity tests were compared to the predicted concentrations. Diquat, with 96-h LC50s of 0.74-4.9 mg/L, was more toxic to these early life stages than endothall or fluridone, with 96-h LC50s of 16-130 mg/L and 1.8-13 mg/L respectively. The LC50s for endothall and fluridone were at least one order of magnitude greater than the labeled application concentrations. As the LC50s for diquat were very close to the predicted concentration, the safety margin for the use of diquat appears to be very small
Red Oak Seedlings as Indicators of Deer Browse Pressure: Gauging the Outcome of Different White-Tailed Deer Management Approaches
After decades of high deer populations, North American forests have lost much of their previous biodiversity. Any landscape‐level recovery requires substantial reduc‐ tions in deer herds, but modern societies and wildlife management agencies appear unable to devise appropriate solutions to this chronic ecological and human health crisis. We evaluated the effectiveness of fertility control and hunting in reducing deer impacts at Cornell University. We estimated spring deer populations and planted Quercus rubra seedlings to assess deer browse pressure, rodent attack, and other factors compromising seedling performance. Oak seedlings protected in cages grew well, but deer annually browsed ≥60% of unprotected seedlings. Despite female ster‐ ilization rates of \u3e90%, the deer population remained stable. Neither sterilization nor recreational hunting reduced deer browse rates and neither appears able to achieve reductions in deer populations or their impacts. We eliminated deer sterilization and recreational hunting in a core management area in favor of allowing volunteer arch‐ ers to shoot deer over bait, including at night. This resulted in a substantial reduction in the deer population and a linear decline in browse rates as a function of spring deer abundance. Public trust stewardship of North American landscapes will require a fundamental overhaul in deer management to provide for a brighter future, and oak seedlings may be a promising metric to assess success. These changes will re‐ quire intense public debate and may require new approaches such as regulated com‐ mercial hunting, natural dispersal, or intentional release of important deer predators (e.g., wolves and mountain lions). Such drastic changes in deer management will be highly controversial, and at present, likely difficult to implement in North America. However, the future of our forest ecosystems and their associated biodiversity will depend on evidence to guide change in landscape management and stewardship
Decision Support Tool for energy-efficient, sustainable and integrated urban stormwater management
[EN] The use of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) to manage urban runoff and contribute to environmental and landscape improvement is now widely known, but its application is still limited in many regions, like in Mediterranean countries. In addition, there is a lack of Decision Support Tools that consider all their benefits in the decision making process in a clear and integrated holistic way.
In this paper, the (ESTORMED)-S-2 Decision Support Tool is presented. This tool analyses the impact of stormwater management in the urban environment and introduces energetic and environmental criteria in the decision making process. Therefore, it aims to fill in the existing "gap" between SuDS manuals and guidelines and regional and local decision makers, since it quantifies SuDS benefits and includes them in the comparison of different stormwater scenarios. Finally, the results of applying this tool to compare drainage infrastructures in a real urban development are described. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Climate Change and the Co-Production of Knowledge and Policy in Rural US Communities
Climate change requires action at multiple levels of government. We focus on the potential for climate change policy creation among small rural governments in the US. We argue that co-production of scientific knowledge and policy is a communicative approach that encompasses local knowledge flowing up from rural governments as well as expertise and power (to coordinate and ensure compliance) flowing down from higher level authority. Using environmental examples related to land use policy, natural gas hydro-fracturing, and watershed protection, we demonstrate the importance of knowledge flows, power, and coordination in policy creation. Co-production of knowledge and policy requires respect for local knowledge and a broader framing of issues to include both environmental and economic perspectives. While we see potential for local action, we caution that polycentric approaches lead to externality problems that require multilevel governance to ensure coordination and compliance

Impacts of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee on the ecology of the Hudson River Estuary
Between 27 August 2011 and 15 September 2011, the Hudson River Estuary was subjected to two named weather events: Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. An ongoing sampling programme enabled the collection of pre-storm, post-storm and prior year data of physical, chemical and biological parameters at eight locations within or adjacent to the Estuary, including the upper Hudson River and the Mohawk River. Samples were analysed to determine the degree of impact by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Suspended solids and water clarity showed significant changes, particularly at the confluence of the Mohawk River. Total phosphorus, pH and conductivity were all significantly different following the storms, but no identifiable change to total nitrogen occurred. Physical parameters associated with the Mohawk River were different pre- and post-storm, but most chemical parameters remained unchanged. Sample locations within the Estuary showed changes to both physical and chemical parameters. Estuary-wide, chlorophyll a concentration and zooplankton density biota were significantly reduced. The data indicate that quantified impacts to water quality lasted for up to three months. An assessment of these results leads to the conclusion that anthropogenic influences within and surrounding the Estuary exacerbated the ecological impacts of these storms
