    Background: Since the millennium years quite many authors dealing with German-language spelling didactics have argued that the transition from phonemic to correct spelling requires a paradigm change which might have major implications for the learners. Though the latter hypothesis has been resumed in a number of textbooks, it has not been empirically tested sufficiently thus far. Upon utilizing a bio-psychological approach Erdmann and Rummel (2022) attempt to close this gap. Discussion: Despite the fact that the findings of Erdmann and Rummel support the postulate of an early transition from phonemic to correct spelling, the latter findings need to be interpreted cautiously because they are based on insufficient modelling of this critical transition period. In particular, the modified and within the current study empirically evaluated phonological spelling instruction – which otherwise is valid – does not represent the acquiring of a first alphabet, but rather of a second. Moreover, importantly, correct spellings with intransparent phoneme-grapheme correspondences conform – regarding structural and quantitative features alike – rather to the English-language than to the German-language with its specific structure. Future studies are needed to address the latter issues.Hintergrund: Nicht wenige Autor_innen zur Rechtschreibdidaktik des Deutschen nehmen seit den 2000er-Jahre an, dass der Übergang vom lautorientierten zum korrekten Schreiben von Wörtern einen Strategie- bzw. Aber sie bildet nicht den Erwerb einer ersten Alphabetschrift ab, sondern einer zweiten. Und die nicht lautorientierten korrekten Wortschreibungen entsprechen, was auszuführen ist, strukturell und quantitativ eher dem Englischen als dem Deutschen mit seiner besonderen Struktur. Beide Kritikpunkte sollten in weiterführenden Studien beachtet werden

    A Search for Selectrons and Squarks at HERA

    Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95% confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figure

    Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic epep scattering, in which a sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded fil

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper reports a measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb^-1 for jets with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2.5. D*+/- mesons found in jets are fully reconstructed in the decay chain: D*+ -> D0pi+, D0 -> K-pi+, and its charge conjugate. The production rate is found to be N(D*+/-)/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for D*+/- mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3 < z < 1.     Search for supersymmetry in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one isolated lepton in sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions using 1 fb-1 of ATLAS data

    We present an update of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon, using 1.04 fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in the first half of 2011. The analysis is carried out in four distinct signal regions with either three or four jets and variations on the (missing) transverse momentum cuts, resulting in optimized limits for various supersymmetry models. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Limits are set on the visible cross-section of new physics within the kinematic requirements of the search. The results are interpreted as limits on the parameters of the minimal supergravity framework, limits on cross-sections of simplified models with specific squark and gluino decay modes, and limits on parameters of a model with bilinear R-parity violation.Comment: 18 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 9 figures, 4 tables, final version to appear in Physical Review

    Evaluating short- and long-term impacts of a Medicaid “lock-in” program on opioid and benzodiazepine prescriptions dispensed to beneficiaries

    Background Insurance-based “lock-in” programs (LIPs) have become a popular strategy to address controlled substance (CS) (e.g., opioid) misuse. However, little is known about their impacts. We examined changes in CS dispensing to beneficiaries in the 12-month North Carolina Medicaid LIP. Methods We analyzed Medicaid claims linked to Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) records for beneficiaries enrolled in the LIP between October 2010 and September 2012 (n = 2702). Outcomes of interest were 1) number of dispensed CS prescriptions and 2) morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) of dispensed opioids while a) locked-in and b) in the year following release. Results Compared to a period of stable CS dispensed prior to LIP enrollment, numbers of dispensed CS during lock-in and post-release were lower (count difference per person-month: −0.05 (95% CI: −0.11, 0.01); −0.23 (95% CI: −0.31, −0.15), respectively). However, beneficiaries’ average daily MMEs of opioids were elevated during both lock-in and post-release (daily mean difference per person: 18.7 (95% CI: 13.9, 23.6); 11.1 (95% CI: 5.1, 17.1), respectively). Stratification by payer source revealed increases in using non-Medicaid (e.g., out-of-pocket) payment during lock-in that persisted following release. Conclusion While the LIP reduced the number of CS dispensed, the program was also associated with increased acquisition of CS prescriptions using non-Medicaid payment. Moreover, beneficiaries acquired greater dosages of dispensed opioids from both Medicaid and non-Medicaid payment sources during lock-in and post-release. Refining LIPs to increase beneficiary access to substance use disorder screening and treatment services and provider use of PDMPs may address important unintended consequences

    Reducing heterotic M-theory to five dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary

    This paper constructs the reduction of heterotic MM-theory in eleven dimensions to a supergravity model on a manifold with boundary in five dimensions using a Calabi-Yau three-fold. New results are presented for the boundary terms in the action and for the boundary conditions on the bulk fields. Some general features of dualisation on a manifold with boundary are used to explain the origin of some topological terms in the action. The effect of gaugino condensation on the fermion boundary conditions leads to a `twist' in the chirality of the gravitino which can provide an uplifting mechanism in the vacuum energy to cancel the cosmological constant after moduli stabilisation.Comment: 16 pages, RevTe

    Functional architecture of the rat parasubiculum

    The parasubiculum is a major input structure of layer 2 of medial entorhinal cortex, where most grid cells are found. Here we investigated parasubicular circuits of the rat by anatomical analysis combined with juxtacellular recording/labeling and tetrode recordings during spatial exploration. In tangential sections, the parasubiculum appears as a linear structure flanking the medial entorhinal cortex mediodorsally. With a length of ∼5.2 mm and a width of only ∼0.3 mm (approximately one dendritic tree diameter), the parasubiculum is both one of the longest and narrowest cortical structures. Parasubicular neurons span the height of cortical layers 2 and 3, and we observed no obvious association of deep layers to this structure. The "superficial parasubiculum" (layers 2 and 1) divides into ∼15 patches, whereas deeper parasubicular sections (layer 3) form a continuous band of neurons. Anterograde tracing experiments show that parasubicular neurons extend long "circumcurrent" axons establishing a "global" internal connectivity. The parasubiculum is a prime target of GABAergic and cholinergic medial septal inputs. Other input structures include the subiculum, presubiculum, and anterior thalamus. Functional analysis of identified and unidentified parasubicular neurons shows strong theta rhythmicity of spiking, a large fraction of head-direction selectivity (50%, 34 of 68), and spatial responses (grid, border and irregular spatial cells, 57%, 39 of 68). Parasubicular output preferentially targets patches of calbindin-positive pyramidal neurons in layer 2 of medial entorhinal cortex, which might be relevant for grid cell function. These findings suggest the parasubiculum might shape entorhinal theta rhythmicity and the (dorsoventral) integration of information across grid scales

    Measurement of tau polarization in W->taunu decays with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    In this paper, a measurement of tau polarization in W->taunu decays is presented. It is measured from the energies of the decay products in hadronic tau decays with a single final state charged particle. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 24 pb^-1, were collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2010. The measured value of the tau polarization is Ptau = -1.06 +/- 0.04 (stat) + 0.05 (syst) - 0.07 (syst), in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and is consistent with a physically allowed 95% CL interval [-1,-0.91].
