Channels of Synthesis Forty Years On: Integrated Analysis of Spatial Economic Systems

    Get PDF
Isard’s vision of integrated modeling that was laid out in the 1960s book Methods of Regional Science provided a road map for the development of more sophisticated analysis of spatial economic systems. Some forty years later, we look back at this vision and trace developments in a sample of three areas – demographic-econometric integrated modeling, spatial interaction modeling, and environmental-economic modeling. Attention will be focused on methodological advances and their motivation by new developments in theory as well as innovations in the applications of these models to address new policy challenges. Underlying the discussion will be an evaluation of the way in which spatial issues have been addressed, ranging from concerns with regionalization to issues of spillovers and spatial correlation.Spatial economic system, Integrated analysis,

Aceh-Nias reconstruction and rehabilitation: Progress and challenges at the end of 2006

This study examines the recovery and reconstruction experience of Indonesia, following the December 2004 Asian tsunami that destroyed much of Aceh island, inflicting some 167,000 fatalities and destroying much of the island's housing and infrastructure. This was followed soon after by a major earthquake in the neighbouring island of Nias. A large reconstruction programme was launched by the government, with pledges from international donors to meet most of the reconstruction costs. The changed approach in Aceh following the tsunami paved the way for a peace settlement that ended a decades-long military conflict in the province. However, two years after the tsunami key reconstruction plan targets have not been met and are unlikely to be met in the foreseeable future. The Indonesian experience highlights coordination problems between the many government agencies, international donors, and NGOs; difficulties for reconstruction agencies in using funds effectively; and the dangers of a large funding gap emerging because of underestimation of local cost increases. Lessons and implications are drawn for institutional development and policy formulation to cope with future natural disasters. These have relevance not only for Indonesia but also for many other developing countries

The ASEAN and its dialogue partner countries agreed to reduce trade barriers in the services sector, one of which is sea transport services. The purpose of this study is to estimate the equivalent tax of non-tariff barriers in the sea transport services. Besides that, this study is going to analyze the economic impacts of the regulatory barriers elimination in the sea transport services of ASEAN and its dialogue partner countries. Using the gravity model, it can be identified that trade barriers of sea transport services sector of ASEAN and dialogue partner countries are still relatively high. Additionally, by adopting IC-IRTS model in Global CGE Model (GTAP), the simulation results show consistent results with the theory of pro-competitive effects. The greater gain from trade is obtained in the CGE model assuming IC-IRTS compared to PC-CRTS. China gains a greater benefit that is indicated by the highest increase in welfare and GDP followed by Japan and AustraliaDOI: 10.15408/sjie.v6i2.527

In EFL classrooms, pronunciation has often been the most neglected teaching-learning component. As a result, many EFL learners hold that English pronunciation is difficult to master, and they always find it difficult to speak confidently and intelligibly. This study is action research aimed at improving EFL students’ pronunciation by using songs in a blended learning environment. Conducted in April to May 2017, the study involved 30 tenth graders of a private senior high school in Depok, West Java, Indonesia. The face-to-face instructions were conducted in the language laboratory of the school, while the online sessions were conducted employing Edmodo as the learning management system (LMS). Learning activities were focused on using songs to improve the consonants, vowels, diphthongs, silent sounds, consonant clusters, stress and linking that were identified to be problematic for the participants in the pre-test. Data were collected by administering tests and questionnaires. The results showed that using songs in a blended learning environment improved the participants’ English pronunciation skills. The average scores of the three tests administered before, during, and after the project implementation successively increased. The data obtained from the survey revealed that pronunciation instruction using songs was interesting to the participants, helped their pronunciation improvement, and increased their self-confidence in English speaking.  &nbsp

This paper is based on a study conducted in December 2010 to investigate the perceptions of the students of the English Teaching Study Program of FKIP-UKI Jakarta on their English speaking skill development. The findings revealed that all respondents viewed speaking important and they were willing to deal with the necessities to master it. Although they got interesting materials, empowering activities, and proper opportunity to practice speaking, they insisted to have longer time to practice. In addition, some respondents tended to avoid speaking due to their fear of lecturers’ ‘scolding’ and classmates’ laughing. The paper concludes by suggesting the need to create a friendly and conducive environment in the classroom

The Effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Using Video-Based Learning (VBL) on Mathematics Students’ Problem-Solving Ability in SMK Negeri 14 Medan

    Get PDF
The low mathematical problem-solvingability of class X students of SMK Negeri 14 Medan and the lack of application of learning models according to the latest trends are the background of this research. This study aims to determine the effect and effect size of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) using Video-Based Learning (VBL) on the mathematical problem-solvingability of students at SMK Negeri 14 Medan in a two-variable linear equation system. This research is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design, where class X TEI is the experimental class, and class X TITL 1 as the control class. Data collection techniques in the form of pretest and posttest results were given to the two research classes. Furthermore, the t-test was carried out to test the hypothesis after first passing the prerequisite tests, namely the normality test and homogeneity test. The results obtained indicate that learning with the PBL model using VBL has an effect on students' mathematical problem-solvingability. Students who are taught with the PBL model using VBL have higher problem-solvingability than those taught with the direct learning model. The effect size of the treatment indicate that there is a high and consistent influence of the application of the PBL model using VBL on the mathematical problem-solvingability of students at SMK Negeri 14 Meda

Patient Monitor is a device that monitors physiological conditions in the form of NIBP (Non-Ivasive Blood Pressure) blood pressure, temperature, respiration, SPO2 and the shape of the heart pulse continuously. The purpose of this study was to find out how the system works and the use of Non Iinvasive Blood Pressure is good in order to get maximum results. This research is a descriptive and qualitative method, namely by analyzing the Work System and the Effect of Noun Invasive Blood Pressure measurement on the Patient Monitor. The results obtained are the NIBP working system on the patient monitor device consisting of power supply, motor, air valve, microprocessor, display. The blood pressure measurement system uses a cuff with air pressure generated by a motor. The conclusion of this study is that the NIBP works using a pneumatic system, namely using air pressure, where the cuff is inflated until the pressure reaches a maximum above systolic pressure, where the arteries are effectively blocked. Then the cuff pressure is reduced to a constant level, the pressure traducer provides an analog signal to the digital hardware during the process of obtaining the systolic, diastolic and mean pressures
