    Field Redefinitions at Finite Density

    Get PDF
The apparent dependence of nuclear matter observables on off-shell properties of the two-nucleon potential is re-examined in the context of the effective field theory (EFT) approach. Finite density (thermodynamic) observables are invariant under field redefinitions, which extends the well-known theorem about the invariance of S-matrix elements. Simple examples demonstrate how field redefinitions can shift contributions between purely off-shell two-body interactions and many-body forces, leaving both scattering and finite-density observables unchanged. If only the transformed two-body potentials are kept, however, the nuclear matter binding curves will depend on the off-shell part (generating ``Coester bands''). The correspondence between field redefinitions and unitary transformations, which have traditionally been used to generate ``phase-equivalent'' nucleon-nucleon potentials, is also demonstrated.Comment: 23 pages, RevTex, 9 ps figures, included with epsf.tex, minor change

Measurement of Farmers’ Attitude towards Complete Ownership of Farmland in Eastern Ethiopia

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was developing a scale with which to measure farmers’ attitude towards complete ownership of farmland. The research started by identifying 50 different statements based on review of the empirical literature and information obtained from stakeholders and experts. Of these statements, 30 items were selected and ultimately only 12 consistent and reliable statements were retained for inclusion in a five point Likert type scale. The 12 statements’ scale was administered on 335 randomly selected sample farmers to measure their attitude towards complete ownership of farmland. The result shows that about 85% and 9% of the respondents were favoring and disfavoring complete ownership of farmland, respectively. Only 6% of the sample respondents were undecided in terms of their preference for the complete ownership of farmland. This detailed study together with strict follow-up of data collection from the sample respondents has been extremely useful in developing a relatively consistent tool to measure farmers’ attitude. Therefore, the 12- item five point Likert scale can be applicable in similar situations of Ethiopia in particular, and in developing countries in general.attitudes, farmers’ attitude, Likert scale, item generation and analysis, complete ownership of farmland, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Farm Management, Land Economics/Use,

Estimation of body composition in tropical sheep raised under seasonal feed supply conditions: Prediction models

    Get PDF
Prediction models were developed from isotope dilution space (D2O) and live animal measurements (heart girth, height at withers, body length and tail volume measurements) to estimate chemical body components of indigenous tropical fat-tailed sheep breeds in vivo. A STEPWISE multiple regression procedure of SAS was used to assess the predictive power of combinations of variables and models which minimise the predicted residual sum of squares. With regard to the accuracy and robustness of prediction, models containing body weight as the only predictor variable resulted in less accurate estimates of body components, especially that of body fat and energy contents. However, the use of isotope dilution space (as an index of Total Body Water) along with body weight measurements showed significant improvements in R² and accuracy of prediction equations. Testing the predictive ability of models containing live animal measures only, the result obtained showed that, despite a small reduction in accuracy, indices of live animal measures gave comparable estimation of body components with models containing isotope dilution space. Therefore, considering the cost of D2O and its applicability in the field, indications are that the use of models containing indices of live animal measurements only (in various combinations) is promising for field applications, to provide longitudinal measures of change in body composition of tropical fat-tailed sheep
