“Die Redlichkeit des Betrugs” – Poetic Remembrance and Totalitarianism at Herta Müller and Vladimir Vertlib. The article deals with poetic remembrance of totalitarianism, taking a closer look at two contemporary authors from the German speaking literature, Herta Müller (born 1953) and Vladimir Vertlib (born 1966). Both authors’ concepts of memory re-pose the question of remembrance as related to historical facts and literary fiction as they try to overcome both the congealed memory and the primacy of experience, understood as a one-to-one translation into memory and literary speech. Herta Müller and Vladimir Vertlib do not approach the reality of totalitarianism using psychological realism but through strategies of poetic fiction. Although the term “fiction of truths” may sound paradoxical, both poetic concepts, however, prove adequate for poetic remembrance of the past as linked to fiction in narratives. By evoking and irritating the readers’ expectations with the help of the construction of his novels, the shifts of perspective and disruptions, Vladimir Vertlib writes against preformed stereotypes of memory, be they subjective or collective. Herta Müller develops a poetic language of abbreviated comparisons, in which words, objects and gestures, on the one hand, are abstracted from being self-evident and, on the other hand, are able to express the destruction of people and to refuse obedience against totalitarianism that extends into our language. The article shows on the example of two novels, Herta Müller’s Atemschaukel (2008) and Vladimir Vertlib’s Das besondere Gedächtnis der Rosa Masur (2001) how these concepts of memory are realized and how they detach themselves from the victim-perpetrator-scheme. Both novels prove that psychic damages cause people to become mute, but do not deprive them of language

    XY Needs in Education

    Get PDF
This project examined the unique needs of boys in education. Biologically and physically, male students’ developmental needs differ from their female counterparts. As a result, their educational needs are typically underserved and misunderstood in the standard co-educational classroom. This misunderstanding has led to a gap in educational achievement with girls outperforming boys throughout their school careers, from kindergarten through college. The purpose of this study is to establish the validity of boys’ differential needs. Five elementary school teachers, awarded their teaching credential within the past six years and within their first six years of teaching, were recruited to participate in an interview examining their knowledge of the specific needs of boys in education and their experiences regarding such. Questions were semi-structured in nature. Consistent with the literature review, results indicated abundant experience with sex-related differences in behavior but generally without the knowledge of why and without informed strategies to address them. Major findings included consistent conveyance of boys’ behavior as immature, encompassing references to self-control, distractibility, talkativeness, and impulsivity. Additionally, teachers unanimously reported feeling unprepared by their teaching programs for the different challenges they face in the classroom surrounding the topic of boy related needs. Based on these findings, a review of teacher credential programs is recommended in order to incorporate training that better equips future educators to deal with relevant issues of classroom management as well as developmentally appropriate milestones in students’ lives, biologically, cognitively and physically

Deceased donor organ procurement injuries in the United States

    Get PDF
AIM: To determine the incidence of surgical injury during deceased donor organ procurements. METHODS: Organ damage was classified into three tiers, from 1-3, with the latter rendering the organ non-transplantable. For 12 consecutive months starting in January of 2014, 36 of 58 organ procurement organization's (OPO)'s prospectively submitted quality data regarding organ damage (as reported by the transplanting surgeon and confirmed by the OPO medical director) seen on the procured organ. RESULTS: These 36 OPOs recovered 5401 of the nations's 8504 deceased donors for calendar year 2014. A total of 19043 organs procured were prospectively analyzed. Of this total, 59 organs sustained damage making them non-transplantable (0 intestines; 4 pancreata; 5 lungs; 6 livers; 43 kidneys). The class 3 damage was spread over 22 (of 36) reporting OPO's. CONCLUSION: While damage to the procured organ is rare with organ loss being approximately 0.3% of procured organs, loss of potential transplantable organs does occur during procurement

The Effects of Compassion Fatigue on Burnout Among Inpatient Psychiatric and Intensive Care Unit Nurses

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: This DNP project is relevant to nurses of the psychiatric and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting, as high stress environments may produce higher rates of compassion fatigue and burnout. Investigation of these areas may help illuminate unnecessary healthcare costs that are associated with these phenomena. This DNP project is important to the University of Kentucky’s healthcare system, its patients, and nurses. Increased absenteeism and increased medication errors are positively associated with the prevalence of compassion fatigue and burnout in nurses. Outcomes from this project will allow identification of unnecessary healthcare costs and encourage administrators to focus on reducing nurse compassion fatigue in order to promote safe, quality patient care and overall healthcare cost savings. METHODS: A cross sectional analysis of an electronic survey administered to inpatient psychiatric nurses at Eastern State Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital and ICU nurses from the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital was performed. In addition, semi-structured interviews were implemented at the aforementioned locations to further enhance understanding of the concepts of compassion fatigue. Levels of compassion fatigue and burnout were analyzed using the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Interviews were evaluated using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The sample was primarily female (90.5%), heterosexual (96.0%), less than 36 years of age (57.1%), had less than a post graduate degree (88.9%), were married or widowed (50.8%), and did not have children (63.5%). Most participants were bachelor’s prepared nurses (70.6%), worked in the ICU (77.7%), worked day shifts (53.2%), had worked greater than a year at their location (73.8%), and had practiced for greater than 1 year in their discipline (81.7%). There was a modest negative correlation between compassion satisfaction and burnout scores. Compassion satisfaction and burnout scores differed by work setting. However, no significant differences in compassion satisfaction or burnout scores were found between ICU and psychiatric nurses. CONCLUSION: Although there were no significant differences in compassion satisfaction or burnout scores between ICU and inpatient psychiatric nurses; the work setting, population served, and type of shift worked had a negative impact on compassion satisfaction and burnout scores. Interviews provided a richer essence of the nursing perspective, indicating work engagement and staffing levels may be important factors that impact compassion fatigue and burnout

„Die Sprache hat also ihren Ort.“ Zur Mehrsprachigkeit von Maja Haderlaps Roman Engel des Vergessens

“Die Sprache hat also ihren Ort.” On Multilingualism in Maja Haderlap’s Novel Engel des Vergessens. Based on philological research on multilingualism and with regard to Maja Haderlap’s literary work in general this article deals with the specific form of multilingualism that can be observed in her novel Engel des Vergessens (2011). Maja Haderlap, born 1961 in Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla, Carinthia (region in southern Austria), grew up with two languages, Slovenian and German. The authors of the article pursue the question to what degree her literary work and especially her novel can be characterised as multilingual and what kind of poetic multilingualism can be found there. They focus on the novel’s narrative and on the use of language(s), with a short historical excursus on the Slovenian minority in Carinthia as well as the difficult memory politics in Austria. Maja Haderlap not only writes about the territorial and historical preconditions of multilingualism in Carinthia but also inscribes these conditions in the text itself, characterising both the narrative and the language. Although the novel is the result of a shift from Slovenian to German, its multilingualism can be analysed on different levels: on the level of the relationship between discours and histoire – to refer to Genette’s narratological terms –, on the level of cultural codes of the Slovenian language within the novel’s German text, and in general with regard to the fact, that the text is written with the modes of expression of Slovenian and German or with the help of the ‘no man’s land’ between the languages. One can therefore – with respect to the terms of philological research – find both obvious and latent multilingualism and, thirdly, one can observe Mehr-Sprachlichkeit, a term that has been defined by Silke Pasewalck in previous articles.         &nbsp

Didactical concept for teaching applied content using a simulation game in a virtual distance learning scenario

    Get PDF
During the Corona pandemic, existing and successfully used didactic concepts for applied teaching at universities must be re- evaluated concerning their suitability for distance-based virtual teaching concepts. Teachers taught applied content mainly with the help of case studies, laboratory exercises, or simulations, which in the past were realized through presence at the universities. To cope with the pandemic situation, we initially adapted our former didactic concept to meet proposed requirements for a virtual distance-based learning scenario that helps students to apply theory using a simulation game. Next, we evaluated the learning objectives and successes through a survey. Results indicate the successful adaptation of our didactical concept for a virtual distance-based learning setting and the usability of the simulation game to educate economics, information systems, and computer science. Further, the critical elements for virtual distance-based applied teaching are the means and understanding of why specific content is part of the learning objectives
