Global Financial and Economic Crisis: Implications for Trade and Industrial Restructuring in South Asia
This study investigates the impact of global crisis shocks on India's trade and industry. The authors use panel data modeling and vector autoregression techniques to understand the dynamic effects of global crisis shocks on Indian industry and trade. Changes in trade composition are positively associated with changes in manufacturing composition in India, controlling for other variables. However, there is no strong indication that Indian industry has been severely harmed by the fall in demand in crisis-affected advanced economies such as the United States, the European Union, and Japan, holding other things constant.india trade industry; indian industry; india manufacturing sector; india external trade; global economic crisis
Vertical technology transfer and the implications of patent protection
Significant amount of vertical technology transfer occurs between developed and developing country firms, yet the literature on intellectual property rights did not pay much attention to this aspect. We show that whether or not the incumbent and the entrant final goods producers are from the same developed country, patent protection in the developing country raises developed-country welfare if (i) patent protection in the developing country deters entry in the final goods market, (ii) the marginal cost difference between the incumbent and the entrant final goods producers is sufficiently small, and (iii) the marginal cost difference between the incumbent and the entrant developing-country firms is sufficiently high.Entry deterrence; Patent; Vertical technology transfer; Welfare
Native surface oxide turns alloyed silicon membranes into nanophononic metamaterials with ultra-low thermal conductivity
A detailed understanding of the relation between microscopic structure and
phonon propagation at the nan oscale is essential to design materials with
desired phononic and thermal properties. Here we uncover a new mechanism of
phonon interaction in surface oxidized membranes, i.e., native oxide layers
interact with phonons in ultra-thin silicon membranes through local resonances.
The local resonances reduce the low frequency phonon group velocities and
shorten their mean free path. This effect opens up a new strategy for ultralow
thermal conductivity design as it complements the scattering mechanism which
scatters higher frequency modes effectively. The combination of native oxide
layer and alloying with germanium in concentration as small as 5% reduces the
thermal conductivity of silicon membranes to 100 time lower than the bulk. In
addition, the resonance mechanism produced by native oxide surface layers is
particularly effective for thermal condutivity reduction even at very low
temperatures, at which only low frequency modes are populated.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review

Scope for rotavirus vaccination in India: revisiting the scientific evidence.
Rotavirus vaccines have been developed to prevent deaths resulting from severe diarrhea of rotavirus origin. The use of vaccines as an intervention at scale to prevent and control the burden of rotavirus diarrhea is supported by the argument that prevailing public health measures such as hygiene and sanitation, breast feeding and use of ORS have failed to prevent severe dehydration resulting from diarrhea. The article reviews the existing evidence on the rationale of using rotavirus vaccine as against the feasibility of scaling it up in developing countries like India. The vaccines currently available may not cover the strains circulating in Indian population. The diversity of Rotavirus infection in the country is tremendous and since the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy data has not been collected for India, there is first a need to conduct studies to measure the extent of protection and cross-protection provided by the available vaccines for local strains, before venturing into Rotavirus vaccination program. The potential benefits of immunization have to be first vetted against the risks involved by the policymakers and other stakeholders
