Status of lymphatic filariasis in Afikpo North L.G.A., Ebonyi State, Nigeria

The status of lymphatic filariasis in Afikpo North L.G.A., Ebonyi State, Nigeria was investigated among seven hundred and eighty one (781) subjects from thirty (30) villages, using the following Parasitological methods; the Wet Smear preparation, the Knott's concentration Technique and the Immunochromatographic Card Test (ICT). From the study, the following prevalence rates of Wuchereria bancrofti were obtained, wet smear preparation (1.66%), the knott's concentration technique (5.38%) and the ICT method (21.13%). Subjects within the age group 58-62 years had the highest prevalence of 43.48%, using the ICT method. Males were more infected 85(21.85%) than female 80(20.41%). There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of infection by gender using ICT cards (P0.05) at 2 tailed difference of .780. With the Knott's concentration technique, subjects within 58 – 62 years had the highest prevalence of 26.09%. Males were also more infected 24(6.16%) than females 18(4.59%). The prevalence of hydrocoele was found to be 8.23%. Hydrocoele was more frequent among older people of 53 years and above than the younger ones below the age of 27 years. The prevalence of lymphoedema was 8.88%. Males were more affected with prevalence rate of 5.55% than females (3.33%)

LES PROBLEMES DE LA TRADUCTION NUTRITIONELLES AFRICAINES : CAS DE "EATING RIGHT"

L’étude est basée sur la traduction des textes scientifiques. Son but est d’exposer quelques problèmes associés à la traduction scientifique et de suggérer des solutions. Pour faire cette illustration, un livre écrit en anglais est traduit en français. Le livre Eating Right qui est basé sur la nutrition est traduit en employant la théorie interprétative. Les problèmes rencontrés pendant cette excercise sont expliqués et les solutions sont recommendées. Le résultat montre qu’il ne suffit pas de connaitre les deux langues, il faut comprendre le sujet en question pour bien traduire

L’EVOLUTION DE LA CULTURE IGBO, PRESENTEE A TRAVERS UNE COMPARAISON DE LE MONDE SFFONDRE D’ACHEBE ET AMERICANAH D’ADICHIE

Ce travail est basé sur la littérature africaine. Son objectif est d’étudier la présentation de la culture africaine dans des œuvres littéraires et d’examiner les changements qui sont arrivées en Afrique à cause de la colonisation. La culture africaine discutée dans cette étude est la culture igbo. L’étudeest faite à travers une comparaison de deux romans nigérians. Les textes choisis sont Things Fall Apart de Chinua Acebe et Americanah de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichei. Ces romans sont écrits en anglais mais traduits en langue française. Nous examinons et comparons dans ce travail dix éléments culturels ; le mariage, les fêtes, la vie économique, le traitement des femmes, le système juridique, le système politique, le divertissement, la médicine, l’éducation, l’enterrement et la langue. Le résultat montre que la culture de la société igbo poste-coloniale s’est métamorphosée pour intégrer des éléments de la culture occidentale

QUALITY DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGIES: IMPLICATIONS FOR EDIBLE OILS MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN KENYA

The study sought to establish the effect of quality differentiation strategies (product performance, conformance, and reliability) on the performance (sales volume, profitability, and market share) of edible oils manufacturing firms in Kenya. A causal research design was adopted for the study which was underpinned by the economic theory of product differentiation. The target population was 104 middle and top-level managers from the marketing departments of the edible oils manufacturing firms in Kenya. Complete enumeration was used to include all 104 respondents as the study’s sample size. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23 and the results were presented in table forms. The results revealed that quality differentiation strategies had a positive and significant effect on the performance of the edible oils manufacturing firms in Kenya with p values 0.001 < 0.05. The study recommended that manufacturing firms should apply all the quality differentiation strategies and continuously conduct market research to identify the quality needs of the customers in order to implement strategies that will lead to quality products.  Article visualizations

THE APPLICATION OF LANGUAGE FUNCTION TO THE INTERPRETATION OF LE CORBEAU ET LE RENARD FROM FRENCH TO IGBO

Translation is an art of communication, communication comprises of the text to be comprehended and the psychology of the reader. A translator must create a text that would be comprehensible to the target audience, to effectively create this, one must consider several factors, one of which is culture. This study aims at finding a solution to the problem of depicting European culture to an African audience. The application of systemic functional linguistic is an offered solution. Spatial and Diurnal Assessment of Methane(CH4) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria

This study monitored the levels of methane, CH4 in the different periods of the day in three sites in Port Harcourt urban city using on-site digital portable monitor for 21 days .The results showed that the levels of methane in the sites during the monitoring campaign ranged between 0.01-0.07ppm. Site 2 had highest levels of methane relative to sites 1 and 3. ANOVA statistics showed that the difference in mean concentration of methane between the sites were not statistically significant (p< 0.05) and differences were observed perhaps by random chance in the sampling process..The spatial variation had the trend : morning methane concentrations > evening concentrations > afternoon concentrations. There is no international/ national guideline limit for methane. However, the levels of methane found by this study are lower compared to literature values reported for studies in industrialized cities in Europe and Asia.Keywords: Diurnal, Methane, Minitab, PGM50, Port Harcourt, Spatial, Urba

VERS LA TRADUCTION AUTOMATIQUE D’UN TEXTE PRAGMATIQUE: LE TEXTE SUR LE EXTRA TEXTUEL

This study is an examination of certain problems associated with the translation of non-literary texts, otherwise known as pragmatic texts. By comparing the translation done by a translation software and that which is done by an expert (a human translator), the research wishes to negate two postulations often linked to pragmatic translation. the first being he belief that non-literary texts are always denotative and thus, they can always be translated electronically, without human effort. To make a choice of which software to use, 200 semi-structured questionnaires on automatic translation were distributed electronically to persons of diverse professions. The data was analyzed by calculating percentages. The questionnaires showed that Google Translate is the software most frequently employed by Nigerians. One then compares the English to French translation of Splendid Place Academy Handbook done by this software to that of a translator. This comparison is based on the interpretive theory. Our findings is that GOOGLE’s version is very problematic. The study then recommends that electronic translation be accompanied by the vetting of an expert. RésuméCette recherche est un examen de certains problèmes associés à la traduction des textes nonlittéraires/pragmatique. Nous voudrions annuler deux postulations souvent associées à la traduction pragmatique. Il y en a qui pense qu’il suffit de faire une traduction pragmatique cent pour cent mécanique, pour eux, le texte pragmatique est toujours dénotative. Il s’agit dans cette étude d’une comparaison de la traduction faite par un logiciel et celle faite par un expert (un être humain). Le choix du logiciel à adopter est fait en utilisant un questionnaire portant sur la traduction automatique. Deux cents de ces questionnaires étaient distribués par moyenélectronique aux personnes des professions différentes. Les données récoltées auprès des questionnaires sont analysées en calculant les pourcentage. Ayant déduit que Google Translate est le logiciel de traduction le plus consulté, nous illuminons les défauts de la traduction mécanique en montrant la traduction de l’anglais en français de plendid Place Academy Handbook. On comparela traduction de Google Translate et celle faite par nous en se servant de la théorie du sens. A la fin, notre résultat trouve la traduction faite par la machine problématique, contenant des expressions ambigües. Nous conseillons que la traduction mécanique aille pas à pas avec la compétence linguistique

The adequacy of the current social plan to address retrenchment challenges in South Africa.

The purpose of the Social Plan Guidelines is to manage large-scale retrenchments and ameliorate their effects on employees. In this study a comprehensive literature review and two case studies were conducted to review the theoretical and practical application of the Social Plan. The research findings identified various challenges that inhibit the effective management of retrenchments. These challenges were analysed and interpreted and a new model to effectively manage retrenchments was developed. The new model is centred on a company’s business plan; the concept is a participative performance-driven governance approach between management and employees focusing on business results. The new model suggests that the employment relations management and corporate social investment of an organisation be utilised as vehicles to manage retrenchments effectively

Design, construction and calibration of automatic street light controller using Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)

Automatic street light power saving system using the Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) is a simple and powerful concept, to switch ON/OFF the street light system automatically. It automatically switches ON the streetlight when the sunlight goes below the visible region of our eyes and switches OFF the streetlight when ampleamount of sunlight is available. SUSTAINABLE FIRM PERFORMANCE THROUGH PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGIES; THE HIDDEN TREASURE OF CUSTOMER LOYALTY

The study sort to establish the mediating effect of customer loyalty on the relationship between product differentiation strategies and the performance of selected edible oils manufacturing firms in Kenya. Using the Baron & Kenny (1986) four-step approach for conducting mediation analysis, the study hypothesized the relationship between product differentiation strategies and firm performance, product differentiation strategies and customer loyalty, customer loyalty and firm performance and finally the mediation relationship between product differentiation strategies, customer loyalty and firm performance. The study employed an explanatory research design and was guided by the discrete choice theory of competitive advantage and the customer loyalty business model. The target population was 535,840 of which 104 were top and middle-level employees from the sales and marketing departments of the three selected edible oils manufacturing firms and 535,736 were consumers of the products within the middle-class estates in Nairobi. A sample size of 504 respondents was used for the study. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data and a document analysis guide was used to collect secondary data which was then analysed using descriptive statistics, linear regression and correlation analysis. The results revealed that customer loyalty (R-square change = .028 had a p-value = .005) has a positive mediating effect on the relationship between product differentiation strategies and the performance of the selected edible oils manufacturing firms in Kenya.  Article visualizations
