Impacts from Migration and Remittances in the Nepali Society - Analysing the Migration Process in Nepal

    Get PDF
Nepal is one of the countries where remittances in proportion of the GDP are the highest with 28,8 per cent in 2013. A total of 7,2 per cent of Nepal’s population are found abroad and the remittances that they transfer back have been recognized to play an important role in reducing poverty in Nepal, even though critics argue that these remittances are only spent and not invested. The two aims of this thesis are to analyse the impact from migration and remittances and to what extent these reduces poverty within the Nepali society. This thesis is critically analysing the impact of migration and remittances and argues that the global demand and need of cheap labour to the developed industrial societies will continue to attract and pull migrants out of their countries of origin and could act as an equilibrium to prevent this migration process to backlash. Nonetheless further research, and time, is necessary to measure the long-term consequences of migration and what the total impact of this never-ending demand could be for the Nepali society

What skills do port pilots need?

Port pilots have the important task to guide the vessel safely on the first and last part of its voyage between ports. In addition to safely guide the vessels, the pilots also have the responsibility to protect the environment and to increase the efficiency in the harbor. (IALA, 2012) What skills do port pilots need and how they acquire these is the main research question that this thesis’s will try to answer by using a literature review and semi-structured interviews as data collecting methods. Our conclusions of this is that the investigated literature and our interview agrees on that previous maritime experience as an officer is an important part of being a pilot that can understand the communication on the bridge, with tugs and cooperating between pilots. Despite that previous experience is so important, the international rules do not have this as a demand to become a port pilot. To educate the pilots in the local area knowledge, the CPA uses simulators, scale models and working next to an experience port pilot to let the experience and knowledge be passed on from pilot to pilot. It is also important to keep the pilots technological skills up to date to avoid accidents, this can be provided by the makers of IBS systems software’s

Logistik i byggprojekt – en kartläggning av den operativa rollen logistikansvarig

Problem definition: In the Swedish construction projects, there is a role "logistics manager" whose assignment is to manage the logistics at the production site. Exactly how and which logistic related tasks they perform is uncertain. The study’s aim is to find some general patterns and methods that are used by the role holders. Purpose: The study aims to contribute to the development of construction logistics by showing a picture of the role of logistics manager. Method: The problem of studying how the logistic are managed at building sites is caused by lack of core descriptions within the construction companies. This means that the way logistics are managed varies in construction projects. Variations between role holders’ positions also affect the work methods of the working role. Hence the study area is not homogeneous the design of the methodology must be adapted accordingly. A quantitative method was chosen and a large population was sought in order to obtain a general picture of work practices. Conclusions: There are results in study that partly show a pronounced difference, according to the questionnaire, between construction projects with logistics managers and the alternative group. Where the results show an obvious difference is often in less significant areas. An apparent difference is that the respondent’s answers shows that the evaluations of suppliers almost are redoubled in construction projects with logistics managers. This affects future purchasing processes and collaborations with suppliers because of the increased information about supplier’s behaviour in the supply chain. If one instead chooses to view the two group’s total results, then a pattern in small variations can be perceived. Construction sites with a logistic manager claim to have extended their work efforts in areas such as managing logistic problems, and also in logistics planning as a preventive measure. Another tendency, according to the recipients, is that projects with a logistic manager are better at utilising advantages that can be achieved with well worked-out logistical solutions. A general conclusion is that time-consuming tasks with low priority from a producing point of view are claimed to be executed to a greater extent when there is a person focusing on the support process. If the results are considered from a higher plane, there are only marginal improvements due to the works of logistics managers and sometimes none at all

Optimization of Biodiesel Synthesis from Avocado Seeds Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)

    Get PDF
The synthesis of biodiesel from avocado seed oil has been successfully conducted. This study aimed to determine the optimized parameters for the transesterification reaction using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The transesterification reaction was carried out with variations in the methanol mole ratio of 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8 at temperatures of 40 C, 50 C, and 60 C, utilizing 1 wt% KOH relative to the oil. The avocado seed oil, obtained from the extraction process, has a free fatty acid content of 1.95%. The RSM results indicated that the optimized parameters for biodiesel production were at a temperature of 60 C with a methanol mole ratio of 1:6. The final yield achieved was 82%, calculated based on the initial weight of the oil. The biodiesel produced had a cetane number of 75, a density of 877.4 kg/m, and a viscosity of 4.768 cSt. These values meet the SNI standards, which require a minimum cetane number of 51, a density of 850890 kg/m, and a viscosity of 2.36 cSt

”Tha took the ädela rena frua…ok drap them alla” - Genusordningen i Erikskrönikan - en medeltida svensk rimkrönika

Generating Weekly Training Plans in the Style of a Professional Swimming Coach Using Genetic Algorithms and Random Trees

    Get PDF
Optimal training planning is a combination of art and sci- ence, a time-consuming task that requires expert knowledge. As such, it is often exclusively available to top tier athletes. Many athletes outside the elite do not have access or cannot afford to hire a professional coach to help them create their training plans. In this study, we investigate if it is possible to use the historical training logs of elite swimmers to con- struct detailed weekly training plans similar to how a specific professional coach would have planned. We present a software system based on machine learning and genetic algorithms for generation of detailed weekly training plans based on desired volume, intensity, training frequency, and athlete characteristics. The system schedules training sessions from a library extracted from training plans written by a professional swimming coach. Results show that the proposed system is able to generate highly accurate training plans in terms of training load, types of sessions, and structure, compared to the human coach
