Using the Personality Assessment Inventory to Diagnose and Discriminate between Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder in a University Counseling Center
This study investigated the utility of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) for diagnosing and discriminating between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) with university counseling center clients. Participants were 1541 male and female students who received services at a student counseling center at a large university. Participants were classified as MDD, GAD, or Other Diagnosis (OD) based on the diagnosis determined by the treating clinician, and PAI profiles were compared between the three groups.
The PAI Structural Summary-Revised contains Diagnostic Consider Clusters (DCC) that were designed to identify PAI scales/subscales that are typically elevated or suppressed when a particular disorder is present. The DCC’s for MDD and GAD were examined and the results demonstrated that the criteria for the DCC for MDD were met by 2.2% of the MDD group, and the criteria for the DCC for GAD were met by 3.8% of the GAD group. A discussion of these findings is offered, and the appropriateness of using the DCC’s for the purpose of diagnosis with any population is questioned. Additionally, DCC’s for MDD and GAD for use with university counseling center clients are proposed.
Finally, discriminant analysis (DA) was employed to develop various discriminant functions that can be used to classify individual PAI profile data into specific diagnostic groups. In particular, one discriminant function was created that is capable of examining any PAI profile, and classifying it as either MDD or OD. A second discriminant function was produced that can analyze any PAI profile and categorize it as either GAD or OD. The final discriminant function was developed to evaluate a PAI profile that represents either MDD or GAD and determine which diagnosis is appropriate. Each discriminant function was shown to accurately predict the associated diagnoses. A discussion of the various predictor variables is offered. Taken together, these results support the use of the PAI for diagnosing and discriminating between MDD and GAD with university counseling center clients
Structural Behavior of Building with First Level Height Variation Controlled by Viscous Fluid Damper
The variation of height from one floor to
another is associated with the decrease of stiffness. Such
variations in the world, have claimed countless lives and
have led to the collapse of structures throughout history,
such as the earthquakes occurred in Loma Prieta 1989,
Taiwan 1999, Northridge 1994, Ica 2007, several buildings
products of the seismic event failed by the change of
stiffness at the first level of the structure. The present
research work analyses the structural behaviour of
buildings in the first level height variation controlled by
viscous fluid dissipators. Based on the analyzed
investigations, we have noticed that the buildings of 3, 6, 9,
12, 15, 18, 21 floors, are structures that have collapsed in
the described earthquakes, so on this basis we have
analyzed the structuring of models with 900 m2 with the
variation of the height of the first level in 3, 5, 7 m in the
models of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 floors correspondingly, in
which we analysed the 21 models with a linear time-history
analysis with 3 pairs of seismic records which were treated
and scaled by using the SeismoSignal software,
SeismoMatch, being the 1966 lima case 2 earthquake the
predominant one to analyse the behaviour of the structure,
in which we added the viscous fluid dissipators based on
Fema 274 and the Hazus methodology, in which we could
appreciate the parameters of drifts, accelerations, energy
dissipation, hysteretic graph, which were obtained through
the use of the ETABS 20 software. We conclude that the
addition of viscous fluid dissipators improves the structural
behaviour, optimally reducing the stresses in the building,
controlling the height variation of the first level, which is
ideal for existing structures that require structural
reinforcement, being the maximum tolerable drift of
0.009249 to ensure the proper functioning of this device,
and it was also obtained that increasing the height in a new
building is not appropriate because it increases the drifts
and reduces the accelerations correspondingly

Evaluation of Littoral Combat Ships for open-ocean anti-submarine warfare
This report evaluates the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and its potential to fulfill the open-ocean anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission. It is unknown whether the LCS platform can support open-ocean ASW. This report examines which LCS variant, Freedom or Independence, is more suitable for open-ocean ASW. Initial analysis defines the open-ocean ASW problem space in terms of a threat analysis, mission analysis, current Concept of Operations (CONOPS), and current LCS capabilities. An Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) uses derived functional and operational requirements within a Pugh matrix to decide which variant best performs ASW, and what modifications can improve future designs of the LCS. The analysis shows the Freedom class has marginal advantages in performing open-ocean ASW mission tasks, and establishes three areas for improvement: self-noise emissions, weight, and communication. Potential solutions are explored to address these shortfalls and to analyze their impact on LCS’s ability to meet core requirements of the open-ocean ASW mission. This paper concludes that the LCS is capable of fulfilling the open-ocean ASW mission if improvements are made to the design and CONOPS.http://archive.org/details/evaluationoflitt1094548592Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
