Generalized Toda Theories from WZNW Reduction
We reconsider the, by Brink and Vasiliev, recently proposed generalized Toda
field theories using the framework of WZNWToda reduction. The
reduced theory has a gauge symmetry which can be fixed in various ways. We
discuss some different gauge choices. In particular we study the
algebra associated with the generalized model in some different realizations,
corresponding to different gauge choices. We also investigate the mapping
between the Toda field and a free field and show the relation between the
algebra generators expressed in terms of the two different fields.
All results apply also to the case of ordinary Toda theories.Comment: 18 pages, Plain LaTe
A note on S-duality for the N=1* Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1) super-Yang-Mills theories
We study the N=1* supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups Sp(2n) and
SO(2n+1). These theories are obtained from the corresponding N=4 supersymmetric
Yang-Mills theories via a mass deformation. We show that the number of quantum
vacua in the Sp(2n) theory is equal to the number of quantum vacua in the
SO(2n+1) theory. This constitutes non-trivial support for S-duality between
these theories. The verification of the equality of the number of quantum vacua
involves a rather esoteric identity due to Ramanujan.Comment: 9 pages. v2:clarifying footnote adde
The Frailty of Economic Reforms: Political Logic and Constitutional Lessons
Why are efficiency-enhancing reforms often frail and subject to being undermined over time? Two theories are examined: public-choice theory, which explains this as the possible result of a need, from time to time, to wipe the slate clean in order to retain productivity in the distribution of favors to interest groups, and a theory which acknowledges that politicians may implement reforms for ideological reasons but still, as time passes, be influenced by the logic of the political and media systems to abandon their initial aspirations. In any case, the demise of reforms is partly a function of the constitutional setting: rules which encourage shortsightedness and easy satisfaction of interest-group agendas make it difficult for decision-makers to withstand pressure for legislative change. Avenues to mitigate these problems through constitutional reforms are explored.tax reform; political incentives; constitutional reform
Time for behavioral political economy? An analysis of articles in behavioral economics
This study analyzes leading research in behavioral economics to see whether it contains advocacy of paternalism and whether it addresses the potential cognitive limitations and biases of the policymakers who are going to implement paternalist policies. The findings reveal that 20.7% of the studied articles in behavioral economics propose paternalist policy action and that 95.5% of these do not contain any analysis of the cognitive ability of policymakers. This suggests that behavioral political economy, in which the analytical tools of behavioral economics are applied to political decision-makers as well, would offer a useful extension of the research program.Behavioral economics; Anomalies; Rationality; Homo economicus; Public choice
Sustainable Value Proposition Design in a Product-Service System
Many companies have started to add services to their tangible products in order to defend themselves from increased competition from low-cost economies. Research regarding the transition towards product-service systems (PSS) and how the PSS providers' business models are affected exists, but there is a lack of research regarding how the suppliers to the PSS providers are affected by the transition towards PSS. Therefore, this thesis studies the situation for a supplier/partner to an OEM that has changed their business model to a PSS providing one. As the first step in a development of a new business model aims this thesis to provide guidelines for how to set up value propositions suitable for a supplier/partner in this new environment. When technologically complex products, such as aircraft engines, are provided through PSS offerings it is hard to translate customer needs into quality parameters, which makes it hard to sustain the value to customer over time. Therefore, how to keep the value offering sustainable over time is also investigated in this thesis. The aim of this study was to investigate how a sustainable value proposition can be designed for a product and technology supplier/partner to an OEM that offers PSS solutions. The research has been performed through studying relevant literature and collecting empirical data from a case company through semi-structured interviews and a workshop. The case company in this research is Volvo Aero Corporation (VAC). The empirical findings show that VAC wants to offer product-service bundled solution, which fit the whole spectra of PSS value propositions, to their partners/customers. To be able to deliver these different types of product-service bundled solutions different value propositions that suit the different kinds of PSS offerings are needed. Requirements that must be fulfilled to be able to offer and deliver the different types of value propositions exist in terms of securing sufficient information access, aligning the incentives of all actors involved and achieving an internal consensus of what is delivered
Technology Policy, Gender, and Cyberspace
Event based sampling occurs when the time instants are measured everytime the amplitude passes certain pre-defined levels. This is in contrast with classical signal processing where the amplitude is measured at regular time intervals. The signal processing problem is to separate the signal component from noise in both amplitude and time domains. Event based sampling occurs in a variety of applications. The purpose here is to explain the new types of signal processing problems that occur, and identify the need for processing in both the time and event domains. We focus on rotating axles, where amplitude disturbances are caused by vibrations and time disturbances from measurement equipment. As one application, we examine tire pressure monitoring in cars where suppression of time disturbance is of utmost importance
An A_r threesome: Matrix models, 2d CFTs and 4d N=2 gauge theories
We explore the connections between three classes of theories: A_r quiver
matrix models, d=2 conformal A_r Toda field theories and d=4 N=2 supersymmetric
conformal A_r quiver gauge theories. In particular, we analyse the quiver
matrix models recently introduced by Dijkgraaf and Vafa and make detailed
comparisons with the corresponding quantities in the Toda field theories and
the N=2 quiver gauge theories. We also make a speculative proposal for how the
matrix models should be modified in order for them to reproduce the instanton
partition functions in quiver gauge theories in five dimensions.Comment: 43 pages; v2: minor typos corrected, reference added. v3: Added

Does Belief in Ethical Subjectivism Pose a Challenge to Classical Liberalism?
Classical liberalism stresses the desirability of free markets, limited government and the rule of law. As such, it builds on some moral judgments. According to ethical objectivism, such judgments (in themselves always personal and subjective) can be true or false since objective moral facts exist against which the judgments can be assessed. Ethical subjectivism denies the existence of objective moral facts. This paper asks: Does it matter whether people believe that objective moral facts exist – in general and for a defense of classical liberalism? It is argued that the answer is in the negative. The implication for classical liberal strategy is that attempts to argue that a certain metaethical foundation is needed should be abandoned.metaethics; liberalism; values
