    Spectral Unmixing with Multiple Dictionaries

    Spectral unmixing aims at recovering the spectral signatures of materials, called endmembers, mixed in a hyperspectral or multispectral image, along with their abundances. A typical assumption is that the image contains one pure pixel per endmember, in which case spectral unmixing reduces to identifying these pixels. Many fully automated methods have been proposed in recent years, but little work has been done to allow users to select areas where pure pixels are present manually or using a segmentation algorithm. Additionally, in a non-blind approach, several spectral libraries may be available rather than a single one, with a fixed number (or an upper or lower bound) of endmembers to chose from each. In this paper, we propose a multiple-dictionary constrained low-rank matrix approximation model that address these two problems. We propose an algorithm to compute this model, dubbed M2PALS, and its performance is discussed on both synthetic and real hyperspectral images

    Dictionary-based Tensor Canonical Polyadic Decomposition

    To ensure interpretability of extracted sources in tensor decomposition, we introduce in this paper a dictionary-based tensor canonical polyadic decomposition which enforces one factor to belong exactly to a known dictionary. A new formulation of sparse coding is proposed which enables high dimensional tensors dictionary-based canonical polyadic decomposition. The benefits of using a dictionary in tensor decomposition models are explored both in terms of parameter identifiability and estimation accuracy. Performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated on the decomposition of simulated data and the unmixing of hyperspectral images

    Antagonistic Effect of Intestinal Bacteria from the Microflora of Holoxenic (Conventional) Piglets, Against Clostridium Perfringens in the Digestive Tract of Gnotoxenic Mice and Gnotoxenic Piglets

    Antagonistic effect of piglet microflora against Clostridium perfringens was studied in germfree mice, to isolate bacterial strains responsible for this colonization resistance. The 1:100 dilution of the feces of a 2 day-old conventional piglet, given per os to germfree mice already harboring C. perfringens, led to the elimination of C. perfringens. From this piglet flora, 8 bacterial strains were selected, belonging to the genera Bacteroides, Clostridium, Eubacterium, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and a strain belonging to the class of Mollicutes. When the 8 strains were given to germfree mice 3 days after C. perfringens inoculation, they led to rapid elimination of C. perfringens from feces. Sixteen other mixtures of 2 to 7 strains were similarly tested, but none was able to fully antagonize C. perfringens. When the 8 strains were given per os to germfree piglets after C. perfringens inoculation, they led to the rapid elimination of C. perfringens from pig feces, and to a quick recovery from diarrhea. This study led to the identification of a simplified fraction of gut microflora, able to exert a barrier effect against C. perfringens comparable to the entire flora of the piglet. This study suggests that gnotoxenic mice can be a suitable model for simplifying the flora responsible for a given effect in another host, animal or human

    Dicarba-closo-dodecarborane-containing half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium and iridium : biological relevance and synthetic strategies

    This review describes how the incorporation of dicarba-closo-dodecarboranes into half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium and iridium might lead to the development of a new class of compounds with applications in medicine. Such a combination not only has unexplored potential in traditional areas such as Boron Neutron Capture Therapy agents, but also as pharmacophores for the targeting of biologically important proteins and the development of targeted drugs. The synthetic pathways used for the syntheses of dicarba-closo-dodecarboranes-containing half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium and iridium are also reviewed. Complexes with a wide variety of geometries and characteristics can be prepared. Examples of addition reactions on the metal centre, B–H activation, transmetalation reactions and/or direct formation of metal–metal bonds are discussed (103 references)

    Income Distribution, Factor Endowments, and Trade Revisited: The Role of Non-Tradable Goods

    We return to the traditional theme of the distributive consequences of international prices and trade policies, focusing on economies relatively abundant in natural resources with a large non-tradable-goods sector. Changes in international prices create an aggregate demand effect which impacts on the earnings of factors employed in the non-traded goods sector. We show that, in economies highly specialized in the production of tradable goods and where the import-competing sector is small, under standard assumptions, terms-of- trade shifts have a neutral effect on factor prices and thus lack distributive effects, quite differently from Stolper-Samuelson scenarios. In economies with sizable import-competing sectors and two ?urban? productive factors (e.g. skilled and unskilled labor), changes in the terms of trade do induce distributional tensions through two channels: (i) the exogenous shift in the relative price of tradable goods, and (ii) the endogenous displacement of the demand for non-tradables. We illustrate how, according to the structure of the economy, different patterns of income distribution may arise. Next, we analyze the introduction of trade duties. Trade taxes change relative prices between tradable goods as a terms-of-trade shock does, but also introduce an additional demand mechanism, that depends on the use the government gives to the revenues. If the tax revenues are transferred back to the private sector, the resulting reallocation of spending favors those factors used intensively in the production of non-tradables.Fil: Galiani, Sebastian.     Nonlinear dynamics of flexural wave turbulence

    The Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum predicted by the Weak Turbulence Theory remains elusive for wave turbulence of flexural waves at the surface of an thin elastic plate. We report a direct measurement of the nonlinear timescale TNLT_{NL} related to energy transfer between waves. This time scale is extracted from the space-time measurement of the deformation of the plate by studying the temporal dynamics of wavelet coefficients of the turbulent field. The central hypothesis of the theory is the time scale separation between dissipative time scale, nonlinear time scale and the period of the wave (Td>>TNL>>TT_d>>T_{NL}>>T). We observe that this scale separation is valid in our system. The discrete modes due to the finite size effects are responsible for the disagreement between observations and theory. A crossover from continuous weak turbulence and discrete turbulence is observed when the nonlinear time scale is of the same order of magnitude as the frequency separation of the discrete modes. The Kolmogorov-Zakharov energy cascade is then strongly altered and is frozen before reaching the dissipative regime expected in the theory.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review
