    Extensive amenability and an application to interval exchanges

    Extensive amenability is a property of group actions which has recently been used as a tool to prove amenability of groups. We study this property and prove that it is preserved under a very general construction of semidirect products. As an application, we establish the amenability of all subgroups of the group IET of interval exchange transformations that have angular components of rational rank~2{\leq 2}. In addition, we obtain a reformulation of extensive amenability in terms of inverted orbits and use it to present a purely probabilistic proof that recurrent actions are extensively amenable. Finally, we study the triviality of the Poisson boundary for random walks on IET and show that there are subgroups G<IETG <IET admitting no finitely supported measure with trivial boundary.Comment: 28 page

    Transpressional tectonics and Carboniferous magmatism in the Limousin, Massif Central, France: Structural and <sup>40</sup>Ar/<sup>39</sup>Ar investigations

    New structural, microstructural, and 40Ar/39 Ar data from the NW Massif Central (France) provide additional constraints on the timing and tectonic setting of late Variscan granite magmatism. Previous studies had emphasized the role of late orogenic extension in the emplacement of granite plutons in the Limousin region. In contrast, the new data set is consistent with syntectonic emplacement of magma in a dextral simple shear active from 350 to 300 Ma in a transpressional regime. As an alternative hypothesis to late orogenic extension, we propose that magmas migrated into tensional bridges between active P shears associated with a lithospheric shear zone comparable to a pop-up structure. The Galician region, in the western end of the Ibero-Armorican tectonic arc, exhibits major left-lateral ductile shear zones which can be interpreted as conjugate structures to the Limousin and Armorican shear zones.     Twenty million years of continuous deformation along theKarakorum fault, western Tibet: A thermochronological analysis.

    The role of the Karakorum fault zone (KFZ) is debated. South of 33°N, ongoing dextral-oblique slip along the SW edge of the Gar basin exhumes metamorphic and magmatic rocks of the Ayilari range. Minerals have recorded a continuum of deformation from temperatures >600–400°C down to 20 Ma of deformation along the fault. Greenschist facies deformation superimposed upon the medium- to high-grade deformation marks a kinematic change from pure dextral to dextral-normal motion associated with the onset of rapid cooling. At the regional scale, the coexistence of transtension in the Gar basin with transpression documented along the Pangong range farther north suggests another example of the ‘‘zipper tectonics'' model developed along the Red River fault. The kinematic shift induced the rise of the Ayilari range starting at 16–12 Ma and the incision of major river courses. The Indus River might have become captive of the relief at this time. The river's 120 km of apparent offset implies dextral motion at a long-term rate of ca 8.5 ± 1.5 mm/yr

    Modeling and characterization of cladding-pumped erbium-ytterbium co-doped fibers for amplification in communication systems

    Cladding-pumped optical fiber amplifiers are of increased interest in the context of space-division multiplexing but are known to suffer from low power efficiency. In this context, ytterbium (Yb) co-doping can be an attractive solution to improve the performance of erbium (Er) doped fiber amplifiers. We present a detailed direct comparison between Er/Yb-co-doping and Er-doping using numerical simulations validated by experimental results. Two double-cladding fibers, one doped with Er only and the other one co-doped with Er and Yb, were designed, fabricated and characterized. Using the experimentally extracted parameters, we simulate multi-core fiber amplifiers and investigate the interest of Er/Yb-co-doping. We calculate the minimum gain of the amplifiers over a 35-nm spectral window considering various scenarios

    Demonstration of an erbium-doped fiber with annular doping for low gain compression in cladding-pumped amplifiers

    We present the design and characterization of a cladding-pumped amplifier with erbium doping located in an annular region near the core. This erbium-doped fiber is proposed to reduce gain saturation, leading to smaller gain compression when compared to uniform core doping. Through numerical simulations, we first compare the performance of three fibers with different erbium doping profiles in the core or the cladding. When the doped fibers are operated at the optimum length, results show that the smaller overlap of the signal mode field with the annular erbium doping region leads to higher gain and lower saturation of the amplifier. A single-core erbium-doped fiber with an annular doping and a D-shaped cladding was fabricated. Measurements demonstrate less than 4 dB of gain compression over the C-band for input power ranging from −40 dBm to 3 dBm. Small gain compression EDFAs are of interest for applications that require input channel reconfiguration. Higher gain and saturation output power are also key issues in cladding-pumped multi-core amplifiers

    Rebuilding Babel: a constitutive approach to tongues-in-use

    The argument that communication constitutes organizations (also known as CCO) is increasingly accepted in communication studies. However, what tongue – idiom – is being used and how it relates to the constitution of the organization seems to be overlooked to a large degree. In this paper, we suggest that the Montreal School (TMS) tradition of organizational communication offers a fruitful analytical framework that allows to better take into account the way people practically deal with plurilingual situations as they go on with their daily activities and contribute to shaping their organizations. We identify six core features of TMS and show their analytical power in studying plurilingual interactions. TMS, we argue, is conceptually well equipped to reveal the ways in which multiple tongues are dealt with in everyday organizational settings and to uncover the constitutive nature of tongue-in-use

    Harmonie de l'âme et de la Cité dans la République de Platon: La lecture de Plutarque dans les Vies de Lycurgue et Numa

    Cette recherche questionne le platonisme de Plutarque pour dégager sa philosophie politique en examinant dans quelle mesure le parallèle Lycurgue/Numa s'accorde avec la République sur la nature de la relation âme/Cité. Nous dégageons d'abord une philosophie politique qui se veut une critique de la République dans les deux Vies: le bonheur de la Cité (Sparte) et le bonheur de l'homme (Numa) s'excluent mutuellement, d'ou l'impossibilité de la Cité idéale et du philosophe-roi. Notre lecture de la République nuance ensuite cette critique en montrant que l'âme et la Cité dépendent aussi l'une de l'autre puisque les facettes de l'âme, eros et thumos, sont en tension. L'accord de Plutarque et Platon sur cette psychologie permet finalement une nouvelle comparaison des deux Vies avec la République établissant la philosophie politique platonicienne de Plutarque---l'éducation pour l'âme et la Cité---et sa critique---les bioi en parallèle réussissent mieux cette éducation que le dialogue dramatique platonicien
