Anti-proliferative effect of rhein, an anthraquinone isolated from Cassia species, on Caco-2 human adenocarcinoma cells

Objective: In recent years the use of anthraquinone laxatives, in particular senna, has been associated with damage to the intestinal epithelial layer and an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. In the present study we evaluated the cytotoxicity of rhein, the active metabolite of senna, on human colon adenocarcinoma cells (Caco-2) and its effect on cell proliferation. Methods: Cytotoxicity studies were performed using MTT, NR and TEER assays whereas 3H-thymidine incorporation and western blot analysis were used to evaluate the effect of rhein on cell proliferation. Moreover, for genoprotection studies Comet assay and oxidative biomarkers measurement (malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species) were used. Results: Rhein (0.1-10μg/ml) had no significant cytotoxic effect on proliferating and differentiated Caco-2 cells. Rhein (0.1 and 1 μg/ml) significantly reduced cell proliferation as well as MAP kinase activation; by contrast, at the high concentration (10μg/ml) rhein significantly increased cell proliferation and ERK phosphorylation. Moreover, rhein (0.1-10μg/ml) (i) did not adversely affect the integrity of tight junctions and hence epithelial barrier function, (ii) did not induce DNA damage rather it was able to reduce H2O2-induced DNA damage and (iii) significantly inhibited the increase in malondialdehyde and ROS levels induced by H2O2/Fe2+. Conclusions: Rhein, was devoid of cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in colon adenocarcinoma cells. Moreover, at concentrations present in the colon after a human therapeutic dosage of senna, rhein inhibited cell proliferation via a mechanism which seems to involve directly the MAP kinase pathway. Finally, rhein prevents the DNA damage probably via an anti-oxidant mechanism

Korean Guidelines for Postpolypectomy Colonoscopy Surveillance

Postpolypectomy surveillance has become a major indication for colonoscopy as a result of increased use of screening colonoscopy in Korea. In this report, a careful analytic approach was used to address all available evidences to delineate the predictors for advanced neoplasia at surveillance colonoscopy and we elucidated the high risk findings of the index colonoscopy as follows: 3 or more adenomas, any adenoma larger than 10 mm, any tubulovillous or villous adenoma, any adenoma with high-grade dysplasia, and any serrated polyps larger than 10 mm. Surveillance colonoscopy should be performed five years after the index colonoscopy for those without any high-risk findings and three years after the index colonoscopy for those with one or more high risk findings. However, the surveillance interval can be shortened considering the quality of the index colonoscopy, the completeness of polypectomy, the patient's general condition, and family and medical history

Anpassung des Naturschutzes an den Klimawandel in Brandenburg - Empfehlungen für Entscheidungsträger

Der vorliegende Band empfiehlt Handlungsschwerpunkte für Brandenburger Entscheidungsträger zur Anpassung des Naturschutzes an die Herausforderungen des Klimawandels. Er bildet den Abschluss nach einer 2012 in einem ersten Band erschienenen Analyse strategischer Grundlagen und einem 2013 erschienenen zweiten Band über neu entwickelte Instrumente. Der Schutz der biologischen Vielfalt ist unerlässlicher Bestandteil einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung in Brandenburg. Die relativ gut bekannten Gefährdungen des Naturhaushalts werden in ihrer Wirkung durch den Klimawandel deutlich verschärft. Kluges, vorausschauendes politisches Handeln ist erforderlich. Moderner Naturschutz bedarf eines übergreifenden gesellschaftlichen Engagements sowie der integrativen Berücksichtigung von Maßnahmen zur Anpassung an den Klimawandel, die alle Handlungsebenen betreffen. Zielstellungen müssen hinterfragt und gegebenenfalls justiert werden. Es wird empfohlen, hierbei konsequent einem ökosystembasierten Ansatz zu folgen. Die Priorisierung von Schutzobjekten und entsprechenden Maßnahmen sind verstärkt an stabilisierenden Ökosystemfunktionen gegen Wirkungen des Klimawandels und im Sinne des Klimaschutzes auszurichten. Naturschutz ist als Querschnittsaufgabe stärker in der Gesellschaft zu verankern. Dies stellt eine neue Herausforderung für die Akteure dar. Angepasste Methoden und Instrumente sind einzuführen. Dies bringt einen entsprechenden Bedarf neuer Aus- und Weiterbildungsangebote mit sich

The first part describes the history of this country and development of its society including specific categories of slaves that used to be part of it. It deals with the houshold slaves in the possession of their owners, as well as slaves-for-debts. In connection with a debt slavery the thesis also elaborates on the Old Testament Israel loan system. The next part concerns a detailed analysis of various regulations for treating slaves, which are divided according to the particular books of the Old Testament where they can be found. The results are then summarized in the conclusion

History of Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The paper deals with the influence of Islam on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It begins in the pre-Islamic period, then it deals with the integration of the country into the Islamic world via the Osmanic Empire, the expansion of which it also depicts. It covers the time under the Turkish supremacy in detail, it surveys the circumstances of the formation of the Muslim community, with which its whole future existence is connected. Further it describes the life and the milieu at various stages of its historical development until the occupation by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. At the same time it pays attention to the influence of the Islam on the rest of the population of the country. Its further part then deals with the civil war in the years 1992-1995. It analyses the reasons of its outbreak, its development, the circumstances of its termination and also its effects, with respect to the Muslim nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
