Long-lived selective spin echoes in dipolar solids under periodic and aperiodic pi-pulse trains
The application of Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) trains for
dynamically decoupling a system from its environment has been extensively
studied in a variety of physical systems. When applied to dipolar solids,
recent experiments have demonstrated that CPMG pulse trains can generate
long-lived spin echoes. While there still remains some controversy as to the
origins of these long-lived spin echoes under the CPMG sequence, there is a
general agreement that pulse errors during the pulses are a necessary
requirement. In this work, we develop a theory to describe the spin dynamics in
dipolar coupled spin-1/2 system under a CPMG() pulse train,
where and are the phases of the pulses. From our
theoretical framework, the propagator for the CPMG() pulse
train is equivalent to an effective ``pulsed'' spin-locking of single-quantum
coherences with phase , which generates a
periodic quasiequilibrium that corresponds to the long-lived echoes. Numerical
simulations, along with experiments on both magnetically dilute, random spin
networks found in C and C and in non-dilute spin systems found in
adamantane and ferrocene, were performed and confirm the predictions from the

Organisms use circulating diuretic hormones to control water balance (osmolarity), thereby avoiding dehydration and managing excretion of waste products. The hormones act through G-protein-coupled receptors to activate second messenger systems that in turn control the permeability of secretory epithelia to ions like chloride. In insects, the chloride channel mediating the effects of diuretic hormones was unknown. Surprisingly, we find a pentameric, cys-loop chloride channel, a type of channel normally associated with neurotransmission, mediating hormone-induced transepithelial chloride conductance. This discovery is important because: 1) it describes an unexpected role for pentameric receptors in the membrane permeability of secretory epithelial cells, and 2) it suggests that neurotransmitter-gated ion channels may have evolved from channels involved in secretion

Development of the South Canterbury / Otago southern bluefin tuna fishery
There is concern that many of New Zealand's inshore fish species are being overfished to the extent that fishing effort will have to be reduced to ensure the continued existence of some species as commercial stocks. A dual solution of both reducing the total level of fishing effort and transferring fishing effort to alternative fisheries to alleviate the problem is possible. This report examines the economics of transferring fishing effort to southern bluefin tuna capture off the South Canterbury / Otago coast, and is therefore an example of the problems and potential in transferring
fishing effort. The study pays particular attention to the extension needs in developing fisheries using the results of a census of skippers in the region. Two
chapters have been included to give the reader some background to the southern bluefin tuna fishery and the South Canterbury/Otago fishery. From this information the potential benefits of development, the direct cost of catching bluefin and the opportunity cost of foregoing catching traditional species have been estimated. The indirect costs of providing the necessary infrastructure for development were estimated from the survey. The survey also provided information
on the readiness of fishermen and their vessels to undertake southern bluefin tuna fishing. This paper does not consider the effect on the traditional fish stocks of transferring catching effort to alternative fisheries. However, consideration is given to the economics of transferring catching effort to alternative fisheries regardless of the reasons for having an effort reduction scheme. The transmission of nosocomial pathogens in an intensive care unit: a space–time clustering and structural equation modelling approach
We investigated the incidence of cases of nosocomial pathogens and risk factors in an intensive treatment unit ward to determine if the number of cases is dependent on location of patients and the colonization/infection history of the ward. A clustering approach method was developed to investigate the patterns of spread of cases through time for five microorganisms [methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Acinetobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Candida spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa] using hospital microbiological monitoring data and ward records of patient-bed use. Cases of colonization/infection by MRSA, Candida and Pseudomonas were clustered in beds and through time while cases of Klebsiella and Acinetobacter were not. We used structural equation modelling to analyse interacting risk factors and the potential pathways of transmission in the ward. Prior nurse contact with colonized/infected patients, mediated by the number of patient-bed movements, were important predictors for all cases, except for those of Pseudomonas. General health and invasive surgery were significant predictors of cases of Candida and Klebsiella. We suggest that isolation and bed movement as a strategy to manage MRSA infections is likely to impact upon the incidence of cases of other opportunist pathogen
Zeeman splittings of the 5D0–7F2 transitions of Eu3+ ions implanted into GaN
We report the magnetic field splittings of emission lines assigned to the 5D0–7F2 transitions of Eu3+ centres in GaN. The application of a magnetic field in the c-axis direction (B||c) leads to a splitting of the major lines at 621 nm, 622 nm and 622.8 nm into two components. The Zeeman splitting is linear with magnetic field up to 5 Tesla for each line. In contrast, a magnetic field applied in the growth plane (B┴c) does not influence the photoluminescence spectra. The estimated g-factors vary slightly from sample to sample with mean values of g|| ~2.8, ~1.5 and ~2.0 for the emission lines at 621 nm, 622 nm and 622.8 nm respectively
Raman-scattering study of the InGaN alloy over the whole composition range
We present Raman-scattering measurements on InxGa1−xN over the entire composition range of the alloy. The frequencies of the A1(LO) and E2 modes are reported and show a good agreement with the one-mode behavior dispersion predicted by the modified random-element isodisplacement model. The A1(LO) mode displays a high intensity relative to the E2 mode due to resonant enhancement. For above band-gap excitation, the A1(LO) peak displays frequency shifts as a function of the excitation energy due to selective excitation of regions with different In contents, and strong multiphonon scattering up to 3LO is observed in outgoing resonance conditions
Nerve localization techniques for peripheral nerve block and possible future directions
Ultrasound guidance is now a standard nerve localization technique for peripheral nerve block (PNB). Ultrasonography allows simultaneous visualization of the target nerve, needle, local anesthetic injectate and surrounding anatomical structures. Accurate deposition of local anesthetic next to the nerve is essential to the success of the nerve block procedure. Unfortunately, due to limitations in the visibility of both needle tip and nerve surface, the precise relationship between needle tip and target nerve is unknown at the moment of injection. Importantly, nerve injury may result both from an inappropriately placed needle tip and inappropriately placed local anesthetic. The relationship between the block needle tip and target nerve is of paramount importance to the safe conduct of peripheral nerve block. This review summarizes the evolution of nerve localization in regional anesthesia, characterizes a problem faced by clinicians in performing ultrasound guided nerve block and explores the potential technological solutions to this problem
Fragment Grammars: Exploring Computation and Reuse in Language
Language relies on a division of labor between stored units and structure building operations which combine the stored units into larger structures. This division of labor leads to a tradeoff: more structure-building means less need to store while more storage means less need to compute structure. We develop a hierarchical Bayesian model called fragment grammar to explore the optimum balance between structure-building and reuse. The model is developed in the context of stochastic functional programming (SFP) and in particular using a probabilistic variant of Lisp known as the Church programming language (Goodman, Mansinghka, Roy, Bonawitz, & Tenenbaum, 2008). We show how to formalize several probabilistic models of language structure using Church, and how fragment grammar generalizes one of them---adaptor grammars (Johnson, Griffiths, & Goldwater, 2007). We conclude with experimental data with adults and preliminary evaluations of the model on natural language corpus data
