Chalk streams and grazing mute swans
The evidence shows that swan grazing can reduce plant abundance, prevent flowering, reduce water depth and reduce fishery value. However, these effects seem to be limited to a small number of sites on larger chalk streams. The results of attempted management have been disappointing, and we currently have no simple effective means of preventing grazing damage. However, our understanding of the effects of swans on the chalk stream ecosystem has been growing rapidly, which gives us hope for future solutions. In particular, combining strategies which improve river condition and move swans away from sensitive areas could offer a way of managing grazing effects
A Dark Matter Hurricane: Measuring the S1 Stream with Dark Matter Detectors
The recently discovered S1 stream passes through the Solar neighbourhood on a
low inclination, counter-rotating orbit. The progenitor of S1 is a dwarf galaxy
with a total mass comparable to the present-day Fornax dwarf spheroidal, so the
stream is expected to have a significant DM component. We compute the effects
of the S1 stream on WIMP and axion detectors as a function of the density of
its unmeasured dark component. In WIMP detectors the S1 stream supplies more
high energy nuclear recoils so will marginally improve DM detection prospects.
We find that even if S1 comprises less than 10% of the local density, multi-ton
xenon WIMP detectors can distinguish the S1 stream from the bulk halo in the
relatively narrow mass range between 5 and 25 GeV. In directional WIMP
detectors such as CYGNUS, S1 increases DM detection prospects more
substantially since it enhances the anisotropy of the WIMP signal. Finally, we
show that axion haloscopes possess by far the greatest potential sensitivity to
the S1 stream. Once the axion mass has been discovered, the distinctive
velocity distribution of S1 can easily be extracted from the axion power

Challenges in the management of HIV-infected malnourished children in Sub-Saharan Africa
Infection with HIV, and oftentimes coinfection with TB, complicates the care of severely malnourished children in sub-Saharan Africa. These superimposed infections challenge clinicians faced with a population of malnourished children for whose care evidence-based guidelines have not kept up. Even as the care of HIV-uninfected malnourished children has improved dramatically with the advent of community-based care and even as there are hopeful signs that the HIV epidemic may be stabilizing or ameliorating, significant gaps remain in the care of malnourished children with HIV. Here we summarize what is currently known, what remains unknown, and what remains challenging about how to treat severely malnourished children with HIV and TB.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Effectiveness of enhanced diabetes care to patients of South Asian ethnicity : the United Kingdom Asian Diabetes Study (UKADS) : a cluster randomised controlled trial
Background: Delivering high quality and evidence based healthcare to deprived sectors of the community is a major goal for society. We investigated the effectiveness of a culturally sensitive enhanced care package in UK general practice in improving cardiovascular risk factors in South Asian patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: 21 inner city practices were randomised to intervention (enhanced practice nurse time, link worker and diabetes specialist nurse support) (n=868) or control (standard care) (n=618) groups. Prescribing algorithms with clearly defined targets were provided for all practices. Main outcome measures comprised changes in blood pressure, total cholesterol and glycaemic control (HbA1c) after 2 years.
Findings: At baseline, groups were similar with respect to age, sex and cardiovascular risk factors.
Comparing treatment groups, after adjustment for confounders, and clustering, differences in diastolic blood pressure (1.91mmHg, P=0.0001) and mean arterial pressure (1.36mmHg, P=0.0180) were significant. There were no significant differences between groups for total cholesterol or HbA1c. Economic analysis indicates the nurse-led intervention was not cost-effective.
Across the whole study population systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and cholesterol decreased significantly by 4.9mmHg, 3.8mmHg and 0.45mmol/L respectively, but there was no change in HbA1c.
Interpretation: Additional, although limited, benefits were observed from our culturally enhanced care package over and above the secular changes achieved in the UK in recent years. Stricter targets in general practice and further measures to motivate patients are needed to maximise healthcare outcomes in South Asian patients with diabetes
Search Behaviour On Photo Sharing Platforms
The behaviour, goals, and intentions of users while searching for images in large scale online collections are not well understood, with image search log analysis providing limited insights, in part because they tend only to have access to user search and result click information. In this paper we study user search behaviour in a large photo-sharing platform, analyzing all user actions during search sessions (i.e. including post result-click pageviews). Search accounts for a significant part of user interactions with such platforms, and we show differences between the queries issued on such platforms and those on general image search. We show that search behaviour is influenced by the query type, and also depends on the user. Finally, we analyse how users behave when they reformulate their queries, and develop URL class prediction models for image search, showing that query-specific models significantly outperform query-agnostic models. Scaling in Nonstationary Voltammetry Representations
Despite the widespread use of voltammetry for a range of chemical, biological, environmental, and industrial applications, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the functionality between the applied voltage and the resulting patterns in the current response. This is due to the highly nonlinear relation between the applied voltage and the nonstationary current response, which casts a direct association nonintuitive. In this Article, we focus on large-amplitude/high-frequency ac voltammetry, a technique that has shown to offer increased voltammetric detail compared to alternative methods, to study heterogeneous electrochemical reaction-diffusion cases using a nonstationary time-series analysis, the Hilbert transform, and symmetry considerations. We show that application of this signal processing technique minimizes the significant capacitance contribution associated with rapid voltammetric measurements. From a series of numerical simulations conducted for different voltage excitation parameters as well as kinetic, thermodynamic, and mass transport parameters, a number of scaling laws arise that are related to the underlying parameters/dynamics of the process. Under certain conditions, these observations allow the determination of all underlying parameters very rapidly, experiment duration typically ≤1 s, using standard electrode geometries and without any a priori assumptions regarding their value. The theoretical results derived from this analysis are compared to experiments with an outer-sphere electron-transfer species, Ru(NH_3)_6^(2+/3+), on different electrode materials, and the determined parameters are in excellent agreement with published values
