Universal Central Extensions of Gauge Algebras and Groups

    Get PDF
We show that the canonical central extension of the group of sections of a Lie group bundle over a compact manifold, constructed in [NW09], is universal. In doing so, we prove universality of the corresponding central extension of Lie algebras in a slightly more general setting.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX. Tradeoff between short-term and long-term adaptation in a changing environment

    Get PDF
We investigate the competition dynamics of two microbial or viral strains that live in an environment that switches periodically between two states. One of the strains is adapted to the long-term environment, but pays a short-term cost, while the other is adapted to the short-term environment and pays a cost in the long term. We explore the tradeoff between these alternative strategies in extensive numerical simulations, and present a simple analytic model that can predict the outcome of these competitions as a function of the mutation rate and the time scale of the environmental changes. Our model is relevant for arboviruses, which alternate between different host species on a regular basis.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, PRE in pres

Local biomass burning is a dominant cause of the observed precipitation reduction in southern Africa

    Get PDF
Observations indicate a precipitation decline over large parts of southern Africa since the 1950s. Concurrently, atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols have increased due to anthropogenic activities. Here we show that local black carbon and organic carbon aerosol emissions from biomass burning activities are a main cause of the observed decline in southern African dry season precipitation over the last century. Near the main biomass burning regions, global and regional modelling indicates precipitation decreases of 20–30%, with large spatial variability. Increasing global CO2 concentrations further contribute to precipitation reductions, somewhat less in magnitude but covering a larger area. Whereas precipitation changes from increased CO2 are driven by large-scale circulation changes, the increase in biomass burning aerosols causes local drying of the atmosphere. This study illustrates that reducing local biomass burning aerosol emissions may be a useful way to mitigate reduced rainfall in the region

    Vortices on Hyperbolic Surfaces

It is shown that abelian Higgs vortices on a hyperbolic surface MM can be constructed geometrically from holomorphic maps f:MNf:M \to N, where NN is also a hyperbolic surface. The fields depend on ff and on the metrics of MM and NN. The vortex centres are the ramification points, where the derivative of ff vanishes. The magnitude of the Higgs field measures the extent to which ff is locally an isometry. Witten's construction of vortices on the hyperbolic plane is rederived, and new examples of vortices on compact surfaces and on hyperbolic surfaces of revolution are obtained. The interpretation of these solutions as SO(3)-invariant, self-dual SU(2) Yang--Mills fields on R4\R^4 is also given.Comment: Revised version: new section on four-dimensional interpretation of hyperbolic vortices added

Microscopic Theory for the Markovian Decay of Magnetization Fluctuations in Nanomagnets

    Get PDF
We present a microscopic theory for the phonon-driven decay of the magnetization fluctuations in a wide class of nanomagnets where the dominant energy is set by isotropic exchange and/or uniaxial anisotropy. Based on the Zwanzig-Mori projection formalism, the theory reveals that the magnetization fluctuations are governed by a single decay rate ωc\omega_c, which we further identify with the zero-frequency portion of the associated self-energy. This dynamical decoupling from the remaining slow degrees of freedom is attributed to a conservation law and the discreteness of the energy spectrum, and explains the omnipresent mono-exponential decay of the magnetization over several decades in time, as observed experimentally. A physically transparent analytical expression for ωc\omega_c is derived which highlights the three specific mechanisms of the slowing down effect which are known so far in nanomagnets.Comment: 7 page

Relative humidity and its effect on aerosol optical depth in the vicinity of convective clouds

    Get PDF
The hygroscopic growth of aerosols is controlled by the relative humidity (RH) and changes the aerosols' physical and hence optical properties. Observational studies of aerosol–cloud interactions evaluate the aerosol concentration using optical parameters, such as the aerosol optical depth (AOD), which can be affected by aerosol humidification. In this study we evaluate the RH background and variance values, in the lower cloudy atmosphere, an additional source of variance in AOD values beside the natural changes in aerosol concentration. In addition, we estimate the bias in RH and AOD, related to cloud thickness. This provides the much needed range of RH-related biases in studies of aerosol–cloud interaction. Twelve years of radiosonde measurements (June–August) in thirteen globally distributed stations are analyzed. The estimated non-biased AOD variance due to day-to-day changes in RH is found to be around 20% and the biases linked to cloud development around 10%. Such an effect is important and should be considered in direct and indirect aerosol effect estimations but it is inadequate to account for most of the AOD trend found in observational studies of aerosol–cloud interactions

Tidal energy machines: A comparative life cycle assessment

Marine energy in the UK is currently undergoing a period of exponential growth in terms of development and implementation. The current installed tidal energy capacity of around 4MW is expected to rise to provide up to 20% of the UK’s electricity demand by 2050 [5]. With this in mind, there is a huge range of energy devices, all seemingly promoted by their developers as the best method of extracting power from the ocean. Embodied energy is an important aspect of any power producing device or process, and is used to describe the amount of energy required to begin and maintain the process of energy generation. Until a device or process has generated this amount of energy it cannot be said to be a net contributor of energy. This work used Life Cycle Assessment to study four tidal energy devices, representing a cross section of the existing designs, and compares their embodied energy and carbon dioxide emissions. In order to ensure a fair comparison, a hypothetical installation site is used, with conditions typical of those found at potential array installation sites in the UK. The designs studied include a multi-blade turbine, two three blade horizontal axis turbine machines, and an Archimedes’ screw device. These machines were chosen to represent a cross section of device, foundation, installation and operation designs. They have all been developed to prototype stage, meaning that actual manufacturing data is available. Embodied energy is considered over the entire lifetime of each device, beginning with extraction of raw materials. Energy use from fabrication, transport, installation, lifetime maintenance, end-of-life decommissioning and recycling are all calculated, and compared to the energy generation from each device at the test site. Finally, the embodied energy; CO2 intensity; and energy payback periods are compared to those of conventional power generating systems as well as other renewable energy sources. A range of data sources are used. Embodied energy of steel has been provided by the World Steel Association. Of the four devices studied, all were found to achieve CO2 and energy payback within the first 12 years of their lifetime, and exhibited CO2 intensity of between 18 and 35 gCO2/kWh. This compares favourably to many current energy sources, and is likely to fall as technology improves, array size increases and industry experience progresses
