    Inferring the function of genes from synthetic lethal mutations

    Techniques for detecting synthetic lethal mutations in double gene deletion experiments are emerging as powerful tool for analysing genes in parallel or overlapping pathways with a shared function. This paper introduces a logic-based approach that uses synthetic lethal mutations for mapping genes of unknown function to enzymes in a known metabolic network. We show how such mappings can be automatically computed by a logical learning system called eXtended Hybrid Abductive Inductive Learning (XHAIL)

    Centroids of Gamow-Teller transitions at finite temperature in fp-shell neutron-rich nuclei

    The temperature dependence of the energy centroids and strength distributions for Gamow-Teller (GT) 1+1^+ excitations in several fp-shell nuclei is studied. The quasiparticle random phase approximations (QRPA) is extended to describe GT states at finite temperature.     A particular porting effort is discussed, and various statistics on analyzing the portability of Ada and the total staff months (overall and by phase) required to accomplish the rehost, are given. This effort is compared to past experiments on the rehosting of FORTRAN systems. The discussion includes an analysis of the types of errors encountered during the rehosting, the changes required to rehost the system, experiences with the Alsys IBM Ada compiler, the impediments encountered, and the lessons learned during this study

    Tau functions for the Dirac operator on the cylinder

    The goal of the present paper is to calculate the determinant of the Dirac operator with a mass in the cylindrical geometry. The domain of this operator consists of functions that realize a unitary one-dimensional representation of the fundamental group of the cylinder with nn marked points. The determinant represents a version of the isomonodromic τ\tau-function, itroduced by M. Sato, T. Miwa and M. Jimbo. It is calculated by comparison of two sections of the det\mathrm{det}^*-bundle over an infinite-dimensional grassmannian. The latter is composed of the spaces of boundary values of some local solutions to Dirac equation. The principal ingredients of the computation are the formulae for the Green function of the singular Dirac operator and for the so-called canonical basis of global solutions on the 1-punctured cylinder. We also derive a set of deformation equations satisfied by the expansion coefficients of the canonical basis in the general case and find a more explicit expression for the τ\tau-function in the simplest case n=2n=2.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figure

    Planetary Nebulae with UVIT II: Revelations from FUV vision of Butterfly Nebula NGC 6302

    The high excitation planetary nebula, NGC 6302, has been imaged in two far-ultraviolet (FUV) filters, F169M (Sapphire; {\lambda}eff_{\rm eff}: 1608 {\AA}) and F172M (Silica; {\lambda}eff_{\rm eff}: 1717 {\AA}) and two NUV filters, N219M (B15; {\lambda}eff_{\rm eff}: 2196 {\AA}) and N279N (N2; {\lambda}eff_{\rm eff}: 2792 {\AA}) with the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The FUV F169M image shows faint emission lobes that extend to about 5 arcmin on either side of the central source. Faint orthogonal collimated jet-like structures are present on either side of the FUV lobes through the central source. These structures are not present in the two NUV filters nor in the FUV F172M filter. Optical and IR images of NGC 6302 show bright emission bipolar lobes in the east-west direction with a massive torus of molecular gas and dust seen as a dark lane in the north-south direction. The FUV lobes are much more extended and oriented at a position angle of 113{\deg}. They and the jet-like structures might be remnants of an earlier evolutionary phase, prior to the dramatic explosive event that triggered the Hubble type bipolar flows approximately 2200 years ago. The source of the FUV lobe and jet emission is not known, but is likely due to fluorescent emission from H2_2 molecules. The cause of the difference in orientation of optical and FUV lobes is not clear and, we speculate, could be related to two binary interactions.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Accretion Disks around Young Stars: Lifetimes, Disk Locking and Variability

    We report the findings of a comprehensive study of disk accretion and related phenomena in four of the nearest young stellar associations spanning 6-30 million years in age, an epoch that may coincide with the late stages of planet formation. We have obtained ~650 multi-epoch high-resolution optical spectra of 100 low-mass stars that are likely members of the eta Chamaeleontis (~6 Myr), TW Hydrae (~8 Myr), beta Pictoris (~12 Myr) and Tucanae-Horologium (~30 Myr) groups. Our data were collected over 12 nights between 2004 December - 2005 July on the Magellan Clay 6.5m telescope. Based on Hα\alpha line profiles, along with a variety of other emission lines, we find clear evidence of on-going accretion in three out of 11 eta Cha stars and two out of 32 TW Hydrae members. None of the 57 beta Pic or Tuc-Hor members shows measurable signs of accretion. Together, these results imply significant evolution of the disk accretion process within the first several Myr of a low-mass star's life. While a few disks can continue to accrete for up to ~10 Myr, our findings suggest that disks accreting for beyond that timescale are rather rare. This result provides an indirect constraint on the timescale for gas dissipation in inner disks and, in turn, on gas giant planet formation. All accretors in our sample are slow rotators, whereas non-accretors cover a large range in rotational velocities. This may hint at rotational braking by disks at ages up to ~8 Myr. Our multi-epoch spectra confirm that emission-line variability is common even in somewhat older T Tauri stars, among which accretors tend to show particularly strong variations. Thus, our results indicate that accretion and wind activity undergo significant and sustained variations throughout the lifetime of accretion disks.Comment: to appear in The Astrophysical Journa
