Bounded Delay and Concurrency for Earliest Query Answering

    Get PDF
International audienceEarliest query answering is needed for streaming XML processing with optimal memory management. We study the feasibility of earliest query answering for node selection queries. Tractable queries are distinguished by a bounded number of concurrently alive answer candidates at every time point, and a bounded delay for node selection. We show that both properties are decidable in polynomial time for queries defined by deterministic automata for unranked trees. Our results are obtained by reduction to the bounded valuedness problem for recognizable relations between unranked trees

Maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and the small ratio of muon to tau mass

We discuss the problem of the small ratio of muon mass to tau mass in a class of seesaw models where maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing is enforced through a μ\mu--τ\tau interchange symmetry. We introduce into those models an additional symmetry TT such that mμ=0m_\mu = 0 in the case of exact TT invariance. The symmetry TT may be softly broken in the Higgs potential, and one thus achieves mμmτm_\mu \ll m_\tau in a technically natural way. We speculate on a wider applicability of this mechanism.Comment: 10 pages, plain LaTeX, no figures, minor changes, final version for J. Phys.

Earliest Query Answering for Deterministic Nested Word Automata

International audienceEarliest query answering (EQA) is an objective of many recent streaming algorithms for XML query answering, that aim for close to optimal memory management. In this paper, we show that EQA is infeasible even for a small fragment of Forward XPath except if P=NP. We then present an EQA algorithm for queries and schemas defined by deterministic nested word automata (dNWAs) and distinguish a large class of dNWAs for which streaming query answering is feasible in polynomial space and time

Arbitrary Choice of Basic Variables in Density Functional Theory. II. Illustrative Applications

    Get PDF
Our recent theory (Ref. 1) enables us to choose arbitrary quantities as the basic variables of the density functional theory. In this paper we apply it to several cases. In the case where the occupation matrix of localized orbitals is chosen as a basic variable, we can obtain the single-particle equation which is equivalent to that of the LDA+U method. The theory also leads to the Hartree-Fock-Kohn-Sham equation by letting the exchange energy be a basic variable. Furthermore, if the quantity associated with the density of states near the Fermi level is chosen as a basic variable, the resulting single-particle equation includes the additional potential which could mainly modify the energy-band structures near the Fermi level.Comment: 27 page

Electro-elastic tuning of single particles in individual self-assembled quantum dots

We investigate the effect of uniaxial stress on InGaAs quantum dots in a charge tunable device. Using Coulomb blockade and photoluminescence, we observe that significant tuning of single particle energies (~ -0.5 meV/MPa) leads to variable tuning of exciton energies (+18 to -0.9 micro-eV/MPa) under tensile stress. Modest tuning of the permanent dipole, Coulomb interaction and fine-structure splitting energies is also measured. We exploit the variable exciton response to tune multiple quantum dots on the same chip into resonance.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Final versio
