    A step towards testing general relativity using weak gravitational lensing and redshift surveys

    Using the linear theory of perturbations in General Relativity, we express a set of consistency relations that can be observationally tested with current and future large scale structure surveys. We then outline a stringent model-independent program to test gravity on cosmological scales. We illustrate the feasibility of such a program by jointly using several observables like peculiar velocities, galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing. After addressing possible observational or astrophysical caveats like galaxy bias and redshift uncertainties, we forecast in particular how well one can predict the lensing signal from a cosmic shear survey using an over-lapping galaxy survey. We finally discuss the specific physics probed this way and illustrate how f(R)f(R) gravity models would fail such a test.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Design and realization of a smart battery management system

    Battery management system (BMS) emerges a decisive system component in battery-powered applications, such as (hybrid) electric vehicles and portable devices. However, due to the inaccurate parameter estimation of aged battery cells and multi-cell batteries, current BMSs cannot control batteries optimally, and therefore affect the usability of products. In this paper, we proposed a smart management system for multi-cell batteries, and discussed the development of our research study in three directions: i) improving the effectiveness of battery monitoring and current sensing, ii) modeling the battery aging process, and iii) designing a self-healing circuit system to compensate performance variations due to aging and other variations.published_or_final_versio

    Statistical Determination of Bulk Flow Motions

    We present here a new parameterization for the bulk motions of galaxies and clusters (in the linear regime) that can be measured statistically from the shape and amplitude of the two-dimensional two-point correlation function. We further propose the one-dimensional velocity dispersion (v_p) of the bulk flow as a complementary measure of redshift-space distortions, which is model-independent and not dependent on the normalisation method. As a demonstration, we have applied our new methodology to the C4 cluster catalogue constructed from Data Release Three (DR3) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find v_p=270^{+433}km/s (also consistent with v_p=0) for this cluster sample (at z=0.1), which is in agreement with that predicted for a WMAP5-normalised LCDM model (i.e., v_p(LCDM=203km/s). This measurement does not lend support to recent claims of excessive bulk motions (\simeq1000 km/s) which appear in conflict with LCDM, although our large statistical error cannot rule them out. From the measured coherent evolution of v_p, we develop a technique to re-construct the perturbed potential, as well as estimating the unbiased matter density fluctuations and scale--independent bias.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Bounds on the width, mass difference and other properties of X(3872) --> pi+pi-J/psi decays

    We present results from a study of X(3872) --> pi+pi- J/psi decays produced via exclusive B--> K X(3872) decays. We determine the mass to be M_X(3872)= (3871.84\pm 0.27 (stat)\pm 0.19 (syst)) MeV, a 90% CL upper limit on the natural width of Gamma_X(3872) K+X(3872))xBf(X(3872)-->pi+pi-J/psi)=(8.61 \pm 0.82(stat) \pm 0.52 (syst)) x10^{-6}, and a ratio of branching fractions Bf(B0--> K0 X(3872))/BF(B+--> K+ X(3872))=0.50\pm 0.14(stat)\pm0.04(syst). The difference in mass between the X(3872)-->pi+pi-J/psi signals in B+ and B0 decays is Delta M_{X(3872)= (-0.69 \pm 0.97 (stat)} \pm 0.19 (syst)) MeV. A search for a charged partner of the X(3872) in the decays Bbar0-->K- X+ or B+-->K0X+, X+-->pi+pi0 J/psi resulted in upper limits on the product branching fractions for these processes that are well below expectations for the case that the X(3872) is the neutral member of an isospin triplet. In addition, we examine possible J^{PC} quantum number assignments for the X(3872) based on comparisons of angular correlations between final state particles in X(3872)-->pi+pi-J/psi decays with simulated data for J^{PC} values of 1^{++} and 2^{-+}. We examine the influence of rho-omega interference in the M(pi+pi-) spectrum. The analysis is based on a 711fb^{-1} data sample that contains 772 million BBbar meson pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures and 6 tables.     Observation of X(3872)J/ψγX(3872)\to J/\psi \gamma and search for X(3872)ψγX(3872)\to\psi'\gamma in B decays

    We report a study of B(J/ψγ)KB\to (J/\psi \gamma) K and B(ψγ)KB\to (\psi' \gamma)K decay modes using 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} events collected at the \Upsilon(4S)resonancewiththeBelledetectorattheKEKBenergyasymmetric resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e^+ e^-collider.Weobserve collider. We observe X(3872) \to J/\psi \gammaandreportthefirstevidencefor and report the first evidence for \chi_{c2} \to J/\psi \gammain in B\to (X_{c\bar{c}}\gamma) Kdecays,whileinasearchfor decays, while in a search for X(3872) \to \psi' \gammanosignificantsignalisfound.Wemeasurethebranchingfractions, no significant signal is found. We measure the branching fractions, \mathcal{B}(B^{\pm} \to X(3872) K^{\pm}) \mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to J/\psi\gamma) = (1.78^{+0.48}_{-0.44}\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-6},, \mathcal{B} (B^{\pm} \to\chi_{c2} K^{\pm})= (1.11^{+0.36}_{-0.34} \pm 0.09) \times 10^{-5},, \mathcal{B}(B^{\pm} \to X(3872) K^{\pm}) \mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to \psi'\gamma) < 3.45\times 10^{-6}$ (upper limit at 90% C.L.) and also provide upper limits for other searches.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    First Observation of Radiative B^0 -> \phi K^0 \gamma Decays and Measurements of Their Time-Dependent CP Violation

    We report the first observation of the radiative decay B^0 -> \phi K^0 \gamma using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the \Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a signal of 37+/-8 events with a significance of 5.4 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. The measured branching fraction is B(B0>ϕK0γ)=(2.74±0.60±0.32)×106{\cal B}(B^0 -> \phi K^0 \gamma) = (2.74\pm 0.60 \pm 0.32) \times 10^{-6}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also report the first measurements of time-dependent CP violation parameters: SϕKS0γ=+0.741.05+0.72(stat)0.24+0.10(syst){\mathcal S}_{\phi K_S^0 \gamma} = +0.74^{+0.72}_{-1.05} (stat)^{+0.10}_{-0.24} (syst) and AϕKS0γ=+0.35+/0.58(stat)0.10+0.23(syst){\mathcal A}_{\phi K_S^0 \gamma} = +0.35 +/- 0.58 (stat)^{+0.23}_{-0.10} (syst). Furthermore, we measure B(B+>ϕK+γ)=(2.48+/0.30+/0.24)x106{\mathcal B}(B^+ -> \phi K^+ \gamma) = (2.48 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.24) x 10^{-6}, ACP=0.03+/0.11+/0.08{\mathcal A}_{CP} = -0.03 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.08 and find that the signal is concentrated in the M_{\phi K} mass region near threshold.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Modified version is to be published in PRD(RC

    We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2ϕ1\phi_1 at the Υ(5S)\Upsilon(5S) resonance using a new tagging method, called "BB-π\pi tagging." In Υ(5S)\Upsilon(5S) decays containing a neutral BB meson, a charged BB, and a charged pion, the neutral BB is reconstructed in the J/ψKS0J/\psi K_S^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral BB meson at the moment of the Υ(5S)\Upsilon(5S) decay is opposite to that of the charged BB and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged BB. From the asymmetry between BB-π+\pi^+ and BB-π\pi^- tagged J/ψKS0J/\psi K_S^0 yields, we determine sin2ϕ1\phi_1 = 0.57 ±\pm 0.58(stat) ±\pm 0.06(syst).     Search for double charmonium decays of the P-wave spin-triplet bottomonium states

    Using a sample of 158 million Υ(2S)\Upsilon(2S) events collected with the Belle detector, we search for the first time for double charmonium decays of the PP-wave spin-triplet bottomonium states (Υ(2S)γχbJ\Upsilon(2S) \to \gamma \chi_{bJ}, \chi_{bJ} \to \jpsi \jpsi, \jpsi \psp, \psp \psp for J=0, 1, and 2). No significant χbJ\chi_{bJ} signal is observed in the double charmonium mass spectra, and we obtain the following upper limits, \BR(\chi_{bJ} \to \jpsi \jpsi)<7.1\times 10^{-5}, 2.7×1052.7\times 10^{-5}, 4.5×1054.5\times 10^{-5}, \BR(\chi_{bJ} \to \jpsi \psp)<1.2\times 10^{-4}, 1.7×1051.7\times 10^{-5}, 4.9×1054.9\times 10^{-5}, \BR(\chi_{bJ} \to \psp \psp)<3.1\times 10^{-5}, 6.2×1056.2\times 10^{-5}, 1.6×1051.6\times 10^{-5} for J=0, 1, and 2, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. These limits are significantly lower than the central values (with uncertainties of 50% to 70%) predicted using the light cone formalism but are consistent with calculations using the NRQCD factorization approach.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Precision measurement of charged pion and kaon differential cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at Q = 10.52 GeV

    Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections d\sigma_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Observation of a new charged charmoniumlike state in B -> J/psi K pi decays

    We present the results of an amplitude analysis of anti-B0 -> J/psi K- pi+ decays. A new charged charmoniumlike state Zc(4200)+ decaying to J/psi pi+ is observed with a significance of 6.2 sigma. The mass and width of the Zc(4200)+ are 4196 +31-29 +17-13 MeV/c^2 and 370 +70-70 +70-132 MeV, respectively; the preferred assignment of the quantum numbers is J^P = 1^+. In addition, we find evidence for Zc(4430)+ -> J/psi pi+. The analysis is based on a 711 fb^-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider KEKB.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
