Poster Discussion 23. Cessation - Predictors and Policies: no. PD-864-20Conference Theme: Tobacco and Non-Communicable DiseasesBACKGROUND: Quit and Win Contests were organized in many countries to attract a large number of smokers, who mostly had not sought professional cessation support, to quit with the grand monetary prize as an incentive. The present study aims to explore the influential factors of being ready to quit (want to quit within 7 days) and abstinence in these participants. DESIGN/METHODS: The 4 rounds of Quit-to-Win Contests (2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013) recruited 4,093 adult daily …published_or_final_versio

Restoring brain function after stroke - bridging the gap between animals and humans

Stroke is the leading cause of complex adult disability in the world. Recovery from stroke is often incomplete, which leaves many people dependent on others for their care. The improvement of long-term outcomes should, therefore, be a clinical and research priority. As a result of advances in our understanding of the biological mechanisms involved in recovery and repair after stroke, therapeutic opportunities to promote recovery through manipulation of poststroke plasticity have never been greater. This work has almost exclusively been carried out in preclinical animal models of stroke with little translation into human studies. The challenge ahead is to develop a mechanistic understanding of recovery from stroke in humans. Advances in neuroimaging techniques now enable us to reconcile behavioural accounts of recovery with molecular and cellular changes. Consequently, clinical trials can be designed in a stratified manner that takes into account when an intervention should be delivered and who is most likely to benefit. This approach is expected to lead to a substantial change in how restorative therapeutic strategies are delivered in patients after stroke

This paper examines critically the conceptual appraisal of managing maritime environment surveillance and information control in the Port Concession regime. Operating in a maritime environment is a very difficult task as the industry itself, is a secretive, volatile and fraudulent in nature. There are various restrictions that make Nigerian Ports a different operating environment mostly as regards management of surveillance and information control. Maritime environment surveillance is a concept and strategy of monitoring and supervising operational activities cum events within the confines of any given maritime environment. It is one aspect of search and rescue strategy that requires commissioning of group of persons to monitor and supervise operational activities that happens in the port area and beyond the accepted 200 nautical miles of our territorial waters. Therefore, efforts shall be made in this study to highlight, some possible constraints in achieving the laudable benefits of managing maritime environment surveillance and information control in the port concession era.
