Coupled Groups of g-Modes in a Sun with Mixed Core
Groups of linear g-modes can sum to create long-lived nonlinear oscillations in small "hot volumes" very deep in the Sun that help drive the modes. In these volumes (dimensions -10 Mm), the time average rate of He-3 burning doubles as temperature fluctuations exceed 10% and rises by an order of magnitude for fluctuations of 25%. To be consistent with locally large motions, we impose a mixed shell on an otherwise standard solar model before computing g-mode solutions. Mixing in the assumed shell r = (0.10+/-0.03) R(sub sun) is rapid ( 3. A formalism is presented for summing the g-modes and estimating growth rates under the approximation that modes are strictly linear except in a hot volume which holds only a few percent of mode kinetic energy. Finally over the range 2 less than or equal to l less than or equal to 30, we summed all zonal harmonics, m, for a given l and computed the relative angular orientations that would release the most nuclear energy. This should be close to the physically preferred angular state of such a family and a few examples were displayed

Association of psychiatric disorders with clinical diagnosis of long COVID in US veterans.
BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders may be a risk factor for long COVID, broadly defined as COVID-19 conditions continuing three months post-acute infection. In US Veterans with high psychiatric burden, we examined associations between psychiatric disorders and clinical diagnosis of long COVID. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using health records from VA patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test from February 2020 to February 2023. Generalized linear models estimated associations between any psychiatric disorder and likelihood of subsequent diagnosis with long COVID (i.e. two or more long COVID clinical codes). Models were adjusted for socio-demographic, medical, and behavioral factors. Secondary models examined individual psychiatric disorders and age-stratified associations. RESULTS: Among 660 217 VA patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests, 56.3% had at least one psychiatric disorder diagnosis and 1.4% were diagnosed with long COVID. Individuals with any psychiatric disorder had higher risk for long COVID diagnosis in models adjusted for socio-demographic factors, vaccination status, smoking, and medical comorbidities (relative risk, RR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.21-1.35), with the strongest associations in younger individuals. Considering specific disorders, depressive, anxiety, and stress-related disorders were associated with increased risk for long COVID diagnoses (RRs = 1.36-1.48), but associations were in the opposite direction for substance use and psychotic disorders (RRs = 0.78-0.88). CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatric disorder diagnoses were associated with increased long COVID diagnosis risk in VA patients, with the strongest associations observed in younger individuals. Improved surveillance, treatment, and prevention for COVID-19 and its long-term sequelae should be considered for individuals with psychiatric conditions
Worse sleep, worsening post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Poor sleep quality associated with increases in PTSD symptoms amongst those experiencing high threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health crisis with the potential to elicit and worsen psychiatric symptoms, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Identifying modifiable protective factors is critical for preventing and treating PTSD symptoms both during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study examined associations of self-reported sleep quality and anticipatory threat appraisals of the pandemic with PTSD symptoms 6 months later in a sample enriched for pre-pandemic trauma exposure and PTSD. The sample included 590 adults (mean age 38.2 years) who completed a baseline survey in August/September 2020 and follow-up survey in March/April 2021. The sample was recruited from a pool of participants interested in a prior study about traumatic stress. Participants self-reported sleep quality and pandemic-related anticipatory threat appraisals at baseline. PTSD symptoms were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Baseline sleep quality was associated with PTSD symptoms at follow-up controlling for baseline PTSD symptoms (B = -2.49, p = 0.001). Perceived anticipatory threat of the pandemic moderated this association such that worse sleep quality was related to more severe PTSD symptoms at follow-up for participants with higher (B = -4.07, p < 0.001) but not lower (B = -0.43, p = 0.679) anticipatory threat about the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings suggest that poor sleep quality may enhance vulnerability to later PTSD symptoms during the pandemic, particularly among those individuals who perceived the pandemic as threatening for their future. Treatments that address sleep problems may be beneficial for reducing trauma-related symptoms during and following the global health crisis

Association among anterior cingulate cortex volume, psychophysiological response, and PTSD diagnosis in a Veteran sample.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with fear response system dysregulation. Research has shown that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) may modulate the fear response and that individuals with PTSD have abnormalities in ACC structure and functioning. Our objective was to assess whether ACC volume moderates the relationship between PTSD and fear-potentiated psychophysiological response in a sample of Gulf War Veterans. 142 Veteran participants who were associated with a larger study associated with Gulf War Illness were exposed to no threat, ambiguous threat, and high threat conditions in a fear conditioned startle response paradigm and also provided MRI imaging data. PTSD was assessed using the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS). Decreased caudal ACC volume predicted greater psychophysiological responses with a slower habituation of psychophysiological magnitudes across trials (p < 0.001). PTSD diagnosis interacted significantly with both caudal and rostral ACC volumes on psychophysiological response magnitudes, where participants with PTSD and smaller rostral and caudal ACC volumes had greater psychophysiological magnitudes across trials (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively) and threat conditions (p < 0.05 and p < 0.005). Our results suggest that ACC volume may moderate both threat sensitivity and threat response via impaired habituation in individuals who have been exposed to traumatic events. More research is needed to assess whether ACC size and these associated response patterns are due to neurological processes resulting from trauma exposure or if they are indicative of a premorbid risk for PTSD subsequent to trauma exposure
Sleep and Cognitive Performance From Teens To Old Age: More Is Not Better.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the interaction of age and habitual sleep duration in predicting cognitive performance in a large sample of participants aged 15 to 89 years. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional analysis of performance data gathered between January 2012 and September 2013. First-time players (N = 512823) of three internet cognitive training games measuring processing speed, working memory, visuospatial memory, and arithmetic participated in the study. RESULTS: Performance was based on a measure of speed and accuracy for each game. The relationship between performance and self-reported habitual sleep duration was examined in the sample as a whole and across 10-year age groups starting at age 15 and ending at 75 and older. Performance peaked at 7 h of sleep duration for all three games in the sample as a whole, and the decrements in performance for sleep durations greater than 7 h were either comparable or greater in the youngest as compared to the oldest age groups. CONCLUSIONS: These findings challenge the hypothesis that deteriorating cognitive performance with long sleep duration is driven by medical comorbidities associated with aging. Further, these data are consistent with an optimal dose model of sleep and suggest that the model for the homeostatic recovery of cognitive function as a function of sleep duration should incorporate a curvilinear decline with longer duration sleep, indicating that there may be a cost to increased sleep. Replication and further research is essential for clarifying the sleep duration-cognition relationship in youth and adults of all ages
Sleep and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis responses to metyrapone in posttraumatic stress disorder.
Disturbed sleep is a core feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), characterized in part by decreased delta power sleep that may result from stress-related alterations in corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) regulation and glucocorticoid signaling. Overnight HPA axis response mediating sleep disturbances in men and women with PTSD was examined using a metyrapone challenge. Metyrapone blocks cortisol synthesis, removing negative feedback, and increases the release of hypothalamic CRF and pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Laboratory-based polysomnography was used to monitor the sleep of 66 medically healthy, medication-free men and pre-menopausal follicular phase women including 33 with chronic PTSD (16 women and 17 men) and 33 age- and sex-matched controls (14 women and 19 men) over 3 consecutive nights. Participants completed an overnight metyrapone challenge after an adaptation and baseline night of sleep and ACTH was obtained by repeated blood sampling. Metyrapone resulted in a greater increase in ACTH and greater decreases in cortisol and delta spectral power sleep in PTSD subjects compared to controls, and a greater increase in ACTH in women compared to men. There was no sex difference in metyrapone effects on delta power sleep, and no significant metyrapone by PTSD by sex interactions with either ACTH or delta power sleep. Regression analyses indicated that a greater increase in ACTH response was associated with a greater decrease in delta power sleep response in PTSD subjects, but no such relationship was found in controls. The PTSD group difference was similar in men and women. These results suggest that stress-related alterations of the HPA axis in PTSD may contribute to sleep difficulties. Therapeutics that target the HPA axis may offer promise as a potential future treatment for PTSD and related sleep difficulties
Effects of oxytocin administration on fear-potentiated acoustic startle in co-occurring PTSD and alcohol use disorder: A randomized clinical trial.
Co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common and particularly associated with elevation of hyperarousal compared to PTSD alone. Treatment options are limited. Oxytocin regulates physiological stress response. Intranasal oxytocin administration has demonstrated potential in reducing symptoms of both PTSD and AUD. This study addresses a gap in the literature by investigating effects of intranasal oxytocin on startle reactivity, an important potential marker of both PTSD and AUD symptomatology. This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, within- and between-participant, crossover, dose-ranging study examining the effects of a single administration of oxytocin 20 IU versus 40 IU versus placebo on psychophysiological responses to a common laboratory fear-potentiated acoustic startle paradigm in participants with PTSD-AUD (n = 47) and controls (n = 37) under three different levels of threat. Contrary to our hypothesis, for the PTSD-AUD group, oxytocin 20 IU had no effect on startle reactivity, while oxytocin 40 IU increased measures of startle reactivity. Additionally, for PTSD-AUD only, ambiguous versus low threat was associated with an elevated skin conductance response. For controls only, oxytocin 20 IU versus placebo was associated with reduced startle reactivity

Effects of Threat Context, Trauma History, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Status on Physiological Startle Reactivity in Gulf War Veterans.
In the current study, we explored exaggerated physiological startle responses in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and examined startle reactivity as a biomarker of PTSD in a large veteran sample. We assessed heart rate (HR), skin conductance (SC), and electromyographic (EMG) startle responses to acoustic stimuli under low-, ambiguous-, and high-threat conditions in Gulf War veterans with current (n = 48), past (n = 42), and no history of PTSD (control group; n = 152). We evaluated PTSD status using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale and trauma exposure using the Trauma History Questionnaire. Participants with current PTSD had higher HR, ds = 0.28-0.53; SC, d = 0.37; and startle responses than those with past or no history of PTSD. The HR startle response under ambiguous threat best differentiated current PTSD; however, sensitivity and specificity analyses revealed it to be an imprecise indicator of PTSD status, ROC AUC = .66. Participants with high levels of trauma exposure only showed elevated HR and SC startle reactivity if they had current PTSD. Results indicate that startle is particularly elevated in PTSD when safety signals are available but a possibility of danger remains and when trauma exposure is high. However, startle reactivity alone is unlikely to be a sufficient biomarker of PTSD
Childhood trauma is linked to epigenetic age deceleration in young adults with previous youth residential care placements.
Background: Early adversity increases the risk for mental and physical disorders as well as premature death. Epigenetic processes, and altered epigenetic aging in particular, might mediate these effects. While the literature that examined links between early adversity and epigenetic aging is growing, results have been heterogeneous.Objective: In the current work, we explored the link between early adversity and epigenetic aging in a sample of formerly out-of-home placed young adults.Method: A total of N = 117 young adults (32% women, age mean = 26.3 years, SD = 3.6 years) with previous youth residential care placements completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Life Events Checklist (LEC-R) and provided blood samples for the analysis of DNA methylation using the Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip Microarray. Epigenetic age was estimated using Hovarths and Hannums epigenetic clocks. Furthermore, Hovarths and Hannums epigenetic age residuals were calculated as a proxy of epigenetic aging by regressing epigenetic age on chronological age. The statistical analysis plan was preregistered (https://osf.io/b9ev8).Results: Childhood trauma (CTQ) was negatively associated with Hannums epigenetic age residuals, β = -.23, p = .004 when controlling for sex, BMI, smoking status and proportional white blood cell type estimates. This association was driven by experiences of physical neglect, β = -.25, p = .001. Lifetime trauma exposure (LEC-R) was not a significant predictor of epigenetic age residuals.Conclusion: Childhood trauma, and physical neglect in particular, was associated with decelerated epigenetic aging in our sample. More studies focusing on formerly institutionalized at-risk populations are needed to better understand which factors affect stress-related adaptations following traumatic experiences
