The Role of Research Institutions in Civic Science & Sustainable Development Diplomacy

    Get PDF
Civic science, citizen science, participatory science...the increasing popularity of these terms heralds a more pluralistic, multi-stakeholder process to inform policy-making. This paper investigates the theories behind civic science and presents its relationship to sustainability, and to climate change in particular. It examines how a shift in the science-politics interface impacts research organizations and, more specifically, examines the role of research organizations in sustainable development diplomacy. The Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture, newly launched after several years of incubation, is put forth as a case study on sustainable development diplomacy. CGIAR, a consortium of fifteen research centers, herein represents the research community at large. The role of research institutions in the formation and future of the GACSA is considered through a qualitative, interviews-based, assessment. Interviews with 26 representatives from six distinct stakeholder groups focused on CGIAR's influential leadership role, grappling with civic science, in the development of the GACSA

Competitive Boosterism: How Milwaukee Lost the Braves

    Get PDF
By any measure, major-league baseball in North America surely qualifies as big business. The national pastime is a vital component of today\u27s urban political economy, and baseball teams resemble other high-prestige businesses in that cities must compete for the privilege of hosting them - whatever their true worth. A study analyzes the transfer of the Milwaukee Braves baseball franchise to Atlanta in 1965 as the outcome of competitive boosterism or the active participation of local elites in luring trade, industry, and investment from other cities for the purpose of economic development

Resin Bonding to Silicatized Zirconia with Two Isocyanatosilanes and a Cross-linking Silane. Part II: Mechanistic Approach

In this paper we discuss and interpret the results of shear bond strengths achieved after the use of two silane coupling agents with isocyanato functionality, viz. 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane. The silanes were used alone and also blended with a non-functional cross-linking silane on silicatized zirconia before light-curing of resin stubs on the surface, as described elsewhere in the first part of our study (see "Part I: Experimental"). A series of reaction mechanisms and conceptual diagrams are also presented. The reaction mechanisms illustrating the effect of adding a cross-linking silane into a silane blend, the silane hydrolysis and the behavior of two organofunctional groups (isocyanate and alkene) of silanes upon reaction with Rely X Unicem Aplicap resin-composite cement are discussed in detail. © 2010 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 31 May 201

TAX REVISIONS OF 2004 AND PRO SPORTS TEAM OWNERSHIP

Tax law revisions of 2004 altered the “roster depreciation allowance” enjoyed by pro sports team owners. Supporters claimed this would practically eliminate costly legal oversight by the IRS and, ultimately, increase owner tax bills. Government officials and leagues remained silent on team value impacts but outside analysts argued they would rise by 5%. We model this policy change and investigate it empirically. Supporters in Congress were absolutely correct that owner tax payments should increase but outside analysts underestimated team value increases by half. No wonder Major League Baseball and the National Football League favored the revision. The Great Famine (Holodomor) is man-made famine that convulsed the Soviet republic of Ukraine in the 1930s. Since 2006, the Holodomor has been recognized as a genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by the Soviet government. The article aims to highlight specific historical, cultural and social conditions that contributed to the dynamics of the Holodomor theme in music. It focuses especially on the musical compositions of this historical tragedy performed at the Kyiv Music Fest Competition. We can observe the linguistic and musical semantics of the opus of tragic imagery, along with the ethnic motifs of the Ukrainian cultural space, including musical rhetorical figures of the Baroque period, Christian symbolism of suffering and salvation, infernal stylistics

Surface analysis of flexible polyamides resins and methacrylate resins by scanning electron microscopy

Polyamide and methacrylate based resins are currently used to elaborate removable dentures. These prostheses are supported by the mucosa of the residual mucous alveolar membrane, whereby the surface is of significant importance. Surface irregularities such as pores, folds and cracks can lead to the development and growth of colonies of microorganisms that give rise to inflammatory processes. Observation by scanning electron microscopy showed discontinuities at the surface of the polyamides between 4 and 20 μm and folds. In the case of the methacrylate resin, its surface showed signs of trapped air in the form of bubbles, some of which are exploited. It is estimated that these defects occurred during the casting process of the piece.Laboratorio de Entrenamiento Multidisciplinario para la Investigación TecnológicaFacultad de Odontologí
