ECONOMICS OF VARIABLE RATE NEMATICIDE FOR SUGAR BEETS
The benefit of applying fumigant for control of the sugar beet nematode on a variable versus uniform rate basis is examined. Compared to fumigating an entire filed at a constant full-label rate, varialbe rate application provides a savings ranging from 69/ac (lightly infested field).Crop Production/Industries,

Target revaluation after failed takeover attempts - cash versus stock
Cash- and stock-financed takeover bids induce strikingly different target revaluations. We exploit detailed data on unsuccessful takeover bids between 1980 and 2008, and we show that targets of cash offers are revalued on average by +15% after deal failure, whereas stock targets return to their pre-announcement levels. The differences in revaluation do not revert over longer horizons. We find no evidence that future takeover activities or operational changes explain these differences. While the targets of failed cash and stock offers are both more likely to be acquired over the following eight years than matched control firms, no differences exist between cash and stock targets, neither in the timing nor in the value of future offers. Similarly, we cannot detect differential operational policies following the failed bid. Our results are most consistent with cash bids revealing prior undervaluation of the target. We reconcile our findings with the opposite conclusion in earlier literature (Bradley, Desai, and Kim, 1983) by identifying a look-ahead bias built into their sample construction
Of “raisins” and “yeast”: mobilisation and framing in the East German revolution of 1989
There is no shortage of literature on the social movements that arose in East Germany in 1989. Numerous studies have shed light upon the nature, scale and dynamics of the uprising of that year. But on certain issues questions remain. No consensus exists, for example, on the relationship between the “civic groups” (New Forum, Democratic Awakening, etc.) and the street protests of the autumn of 1989. Were these simply two facets of a single movement? Or are they better characterised as two distinct streams within the same movement delta? Did the street protests push the civic movement activists into the limelight? Or is it more accurate to say, with Reinfried Musch, that “the civic movement brought the people onto the streets”?1 This paper considers two contrasting interpretations of these issues, and finds both wanting. An alternative interpretation is offered, one that draws upon Marc Steinberg's “dialogical” development of frame theory
Cooperation, Norms, and Revolutions: A Unified Game-Theoretical Approach
Cooperation is of utmost importance to society as a whole, but is often
challenged by individual self-interests. While game theory has studied this
problem extensively, there is little work on interactions within and across
groups with different preferences or beliefs. Yet, people from different social
or cultural backgrounds often meet and interact. This can yield conflict, since
behavior that is considered cooperative by one population might be perceived as
non-cooperative from the viewpoint of another.
To understand the dynamics and outcome of the competitive interactions within
and between groups, we study game-dynamical replicator equations for multiple
populations with incompatible interests and different power (be this due to
different population sizes, material resources, social capital, or other
factors). These equations allow us to address various important questions: For
example, can cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma be promoted, when two
interacting groups have different preferences? Under what conditions can costly
punishment, or other mechanisms, foster the evolution of norms? When does
cooperation fail, leading to antagonistic behavior, conflict, or even
revolutions? And what incentives are needed to reach peaceful agreements
between groups with conflicting interests?
Our detailed quantitative analysis reveals a large variety of interesting
results, which are relevant for society, law and economics, and have
implications for the evolution of language and culture as well
Verify and Protect: Guarding Children from Online Pornography
The growing rate of children in the United States being exposed to pornography and its negative consequences on their development necessitate action to protect them from the evils of pornography. While federal and state governments have legal barriers surrounding pornography and obscenity, options remain for children to access pornographic content. Research suggests that more children are viewing pornography at younger ages, which has detrimental effects on their development and holistic well-being. Several policy options exist to mitigate pornography access to children, and this paper will specifically analyze options to be implemented by the state of Maryland, which could serve as a model for other states. Policy alternatives include implementing age verification laws using a government-issued ID (a driver’s license), mandating additional protective measures for school devices in Maryland, passing broadband legislation requiring companies to provide a pornography filter to internet services, or an outright ban on pornography. While each option has its merits and limitations, age verification laws are a necessary first step in protecting children online and ensuring they do not access pornographic or adult content. Healthy children and families are the key to ensuring America’s future, requiring an effective response to mitigate the likelihood of pornography exposure and access
Cross-Functional Partnering and Empowerment in Storagetek Business Unit: Action Research Project
Employees in Corporate Printing, Literature Distribution, and Software Manufacturing at StorageTek believed empowerment and cross-functional partnering was not meeting their expectations. Based on this information, an action research project was executed to look at the reasons for this feedback, and recommend corrective action to this issue. The process started with the facilitator of the project creating a collaborative team. The team used secondary data, and collected data through individual interviews, group interviews, and focus group meetings. The data analysis resulted in the recommendation that changes to training, goal defining, job titles, task clarification, and to the rewards and recognition be implemented to improve empowerment and cross-functional partnering in the departments
