Shuttle derived manned transportation systems
Shuttle derivatives have been under study by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for a number of years. With Space Station Freedom and the Lunar/Mars Initiative established as national objectives, the demand for access to earth orbit is accelerating. These objectives have resulted in efforts to address additional launch requirements that must be met as the turn of the century approaches. Among the top level requirements are increased safety, higher reliability, lower cost, and the need for heavy lift launch capability. To satisfy these requirements, some of the largest technology demands will be placed upon the propulsion systems. Shuttle derived manned concepts are presented and the associated propulsion issues which arise from the top level requirements are discussed. These concepts are presented in terms of an overall architecture which can be achieved with modest up-front development
The alleged contributions of Pedro E. Paulet to liquid-propellant rocketry
The first practical working liquid propellant rocket motor was claimed by Pedro E. Paulet, a South American engineer from Peru (1895). He operated a conical motor, 10 centimeters in diameter, using nitrogen peroxide and gasoline as propellants and measuring thrust up to 90 kilograms, and apparently used spark ignition and intermittent propellant injection. The test device which he used contained elements of later test stands, such as a spring thrust-measuring device. However, he did not publish his work until twenty-five years later. The relationship between body image and marital satisfaction
Advisor: Dr. Alexander Waigandt.Includes vita.The effects of weight stigma and its internalized variation, body dissatisfaction, have been documented in many aspects of life, including economics, education, families and the media. Limited literature exists regarding the effects of body satisfaction within the marital dyad. This study attempted to explore the interaction of body image and marital satisfaction. Participants were recruited using social media. Married heterosexual couples were asked to each complete an online survey regarding their own feelings about their bodies and their marriages. Answers for spouses were linked in the database, resulting in 64 couples who completed the survey. Body satisfaction was measured using the Body Appreciation Scale and the Body Shape Questionnaire. Marital satisfaction was measured using the Couples Satisfaction Index. Height and weight information was used to calculate Body Mass Index. Linear regression was used to explore significant correlations. Body Mass Index was more strongly correlated with husbands' body satisfaction than it was for wives. Husbands' body satisfaction was found to weakly but significantly correlate with marital satisfaction for husbands, wives and couples. Wives' body satisfaction was not found to correlate with marital satisfaction at a statistically significant level.Includes bibliographical references (pages 73-102)

Japanese Purchases, Exchange Rates, and Speculation in Residential Real Estate Markets
Several luxury single-family home markets in Hawaii have experienced significant price movements in 1987 and 1988, along with a tremendous influx of Japanese buyers. Most noteworthy is the Waialae-Kahala neighborhood in Honolulu, where average price increases of over 60% in the past two years have occurred. This surge in prices has stimulated a great deal of speculative interest. The purpose of this article is to examine the effect of exchange rates (yen/dollar) and Japanese buyers on selected residential market prices and turnover. Using the most exhaustive and complete data set available in Hawaii covering 1986 through early 1988, hedonic pricing models as well as descriptive statistics are used to examine the effects of strong foreign interest in local housing submarkets.
Characterizing the Response of Composite Panels to a Pyroshock Induced Environment using Design of Experiments Methodology
This experimental study seeks to quantify the impact various composite parameters have on the structural response of a composite structure in a pyroshock environment. The prediction of an aerospace structure's response to pyroshock induced loading is largely dependent on empirical databases created from collections of development and flight test data. While there is significant structural response data due to pyroshock induced loading for metallic structures, there is much less data available for composite structures. One challenge of developing a composite pyroshock response database as well as empirical prediction methods for composite structures is the large number of parameters associated with composite materials. This experimental study uses data from a test series planned using design of experiments (DOE) methods. Statistical analysis methods are then used to identify which composite material parameters most greatly influence a flat composite panel's structural response to pyroshock induced loading. The parameters considered are panel thickness, type of ply, ply orientation, and pyroshock level induced into the panel. The results of this test will aid in future large scale testing by eliminating insignificant parameters as well as aid in the development of empirical scaling methods for composite structures' response to pyroshock induced loading
Empirical Model Development for Predicting Shock Response on Composite Materials Subjected to Pyroshock Loading
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) received a request to develop an analysis model based on both frequency response and wave propagation analyses for predicting shock response spectrum (SRS) on composite materials subjected to pyroshock loading. The model would account for near-field environment (approx. 9 inches from the source) dominated by direct wave propagation, mid-field environment (approx. 2 feet from the source) characterized by wave propagation and structural resonances, and far-field environment dominated by lower frequency bending waves in the structure.
