    Anti-realist Epistemologies in Education

    Get PDF
Constructivism and postmodernism endorse and anti-realist metaphysics. Once we abandon the fruitless search for objective reality, so the argument goes, we can devote ourselves to making our beliefs more efficacious than they were before. We can do this because we have given up truth-as-correspondence, and have embraced the claim that what makes a belief right is just that experience has taught us that it works. In short, because our claims to truth (and thus knowledge) refer to utter contingent accounts of reality, it follows that they are only contextually true. As such, any claim to an invariant foundation (an objectively knowable external world, for example) for knowledge is met with skepticism. Instead, knowledge ought to be concerned with the local and specific (contextual) rather than the context-free and totalizing general

Educating for Virtue Across Multiple Cultural and Religious Contexts: On the Problem of Commensurability

    Get PDF
This aim of this paper is to explore the concept of intellectual and moral virtue across cultural, religious, and philosophical points of view—with special attention to the role of education in the formation of virtue. The central ambition of this paper is to determine if virtue is a concept that transcends cultural contexts and, should it do so, to what extent? It is shown that certain ubiquitous virtuous character traits are valued across cultural lines, and that similar understandings of virtue emerge in almost all cultural and religious contexts. Despite this, it also clear that virtue functions differently across cultural and religious contexts, and that the expression of virtue may itself look very different. This is demonstrated through various religious texts, works of philosophy, and traditional proverbs from several important traditions: Chinese, South Asian, Greek philosophy, and African moral theory. I conclude with a discussion of challenges facing virtue- based theories

Sin and the Story of Salvation: The Theology of Atonement in Light of Biblical Narrative Theology

    Get PDF
Contemporary atonement theology offers three general conceptions of the cross: objective, subjective, and dramatic, which corresponds to Gustaf Aulén\u27s classic tripartite typology. Although these different views are important since they contribute to a rich soteriology, when addressing the topic of atonement, or reconciliation proper, the objective type, promoted in satisfaction and penal substitution theories, are by comparison more compatible with Scripture when considering its larger narrative structure. This compatibility is attributable to the seriousness with which they construe the problem of sin that alienates humanity from God and places them in a predicament from which they are unable to extricate themselves. The cross, according to the objective type, is then disclosed as the only solution to the human situation since it is God in Christ who can make satisfactory atonement. Demonstrating the centrality of these themes in Scripture and the comparative consistency of these two theories with the canonical narrative in the works of their leading proponents, Anselm of Canterbury and John Calvin respectively, is the primary goal of this dissertation which will bring fresh insight unto the subject of atonement theology for today

    Establishing Regis Network Security Policy

    Get PDF
This project proposes to establish a security policy for the computer lab Local Area Network (LAN) at the Colorado Springs Campus (CSC) for the Network Lab Practicum (NLP) by completing a network analysis to determine requirements. Utilizing the current network configuration, a risk assessment will be performed to identify vulnerabilities and threats to the information system. Once the risk analysis is completed, a network security plan will be developed to protect system resources. The security policy will include, at a minimum, access policies, password management, firewall policy, policy on use of active code and the Internet, standards and interoperability policies, a VPN policy, and enforcement standards. The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) approach will be used as the project methodology. Key deliverables will include a configuration management baseline, security policy and procedures, wiring diagram, firewall, anti virus protection and lessons learned. The project will culminate with a presentation to the academic board. Class utilization of the LAN will determine the success of the project. In the final phase of the project, the LAN will be turned over to the CSC NLP for administration, classroom support and future project opportunities. Keywords: security policy, risk assessment, lessons learned, local area network, system development life cycle, password, firewall, antivirus, configuration management

Metrology for Ammonia in Ambient Air – concept and first results of the EMRP project MetNH3

    Get PDF

Factors Determining Incorporation Of Innovative Minigrant Programs In Nevada School Systems

This study established the extent to which ESEA Title III Minigrant projects funded in 1973-75 were continuing in Nevada during the 1977-78 school term. Characteristics of the institution and of the innovation found by the Rand Corporation to influence incorporation (continuation) were then compared to four levels of program continuation. Thirty-seven of the forty-two minigrant recipients provided the two sets of data, and the chi-square ((chi)(\u272)) test was applied to determine that the following Rand Study characteristics inferred continuation of minigrants: strong administrative support, dominant staff training model, active consumer demand, congruence with local priorities, and activities which replace local practices
