Guided Lock of a Suspended Optical Cavity Enhanced by a Higher Order Extrapolation
Lock acquisition of a suspended optical cavity can be a highly stochastic
process and is therefore nontrivial. Guided lock is a method to make lock
acquisition less stochastic by decelerating the motion of the cavity length
based on an extrapolation of the motion from an instantaneous velocity
measurement. We propose an improved scheme which is less susceptible to seismic
disturbances by incorporating the acceleration as a higher order correction in
the extrapolation. We implemented the new scheme in a 300-m suspended
Fabry-Perot cavity and improved the success rate of lock acquisition by a
factor of 30
Development of a frequency-detuned interferometer as a prototype experiment for next-generation gravitational-wave detectors
We report on our prototype experiment that uses a 4-m detuned resonant sideband extraction interferometer with suspended mirrors, which has almost the same configuration as the next-generation, gravitational-wave detectors. We have developed a new control scheme and have succeeded in the operation of such an interferometer with suspended mirrors for the first time ever as far as we know. We believe that this is the first such instrument that can see the radiation pressure signal enhancement, which can improve the sensitivity of next-generation gravitational-wave detectors
Thermal-noise-limited underground interferometer CLIO
We report on the current status of CLIO (Cryogenic Laser Interferometer
Observatory), which is a prototype interferometer for LCGT (Large Scale
Cryogenic Gravitational-Wave Telescope). LCGT is a Japanese next-generation
interferometric gravitational wave detector featuring the use of cryogenic
mirrors and a quiet underground site. The main purpose of CLIO is to
demonstrate a reduction of the mirror thermal noise by cooling the sapphire
mirrors. CLIO is located in an underground site of the Kamioka mine, 1000 m
deep from the mountain top, to verify its advantages. After a few years of
commissioning work, we have achieved a thermal-noise-limited sensitivity at
room temperature. One of the main results of noise hunting was the elimination
of thermal noise caused by a conductive coil-holder coupled with a pendulum

Early Spectroscopy of the 2010 Outburst of U Scorpii
We present early spectroscopy of the recurrent nova U~Sco during the outburst
in 2010. We successfully obtained time-series spectra at 0.37--0.44~d, where denotes the time from the discovery of the
present outburst. This is the first time-resolved spectroscopy on the first
night of U Sco outbursts. At ~d the H line consists
of a blue-shifted ( km s) narrow absorption component and a wide
emission component having triple peaks, a blue ( km s), a
central ( km s) and a red ( km s) ones. The
blue and red peaks developed more rapidly than the central one during the first
night. This rapid variation would be caused by the growth of aspherical wind
produced during the earliest stage of the outburst. At ~d the
H line has a nearly flat-topped profile with weak blue and red peaks at
km s. This profile can be attributed to a nearly
spherical shell, while the asphericity growing on the first night still

Reduction of thermal fluctuations in a cryogenic laser interferometric gravitational wave detector
The thermal fluctuation of mirror surfaces is the fundamental limitation for
interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors. Here, we experimentally
demonstrate for the first time a reduction in a mirror's thermal fluctuation in
a GW detector with sapphire mirrors from the Cryogenic Laser Interferometer
Observatory at 17\,K and 18\,K. The detector sensitivity, which was limited by
the mirror's thermal fluctuation at room temperature, was improved in the
frequency range of 90\,Hz to 240\,Hz by cooling the mirrors. The improved

Hepatitis B Virus e Antigen Physically Associates With Receptor-Interacting Serine/Threonine Protein Kinase 2 and Regulates IL-6 Gene Expression
We previously reported that hepatitis B virus (HBV) e antigen (HBeAg) inhibits production of interleukin 6 by suppressing NF-κB activation. NF-κB is known to be activated through receptor-interacting serine/threonine protein kinase 2 (RIPK2), and we examined the mechanisms of interleukin 6 regulation by HBeAg. HBeAg inhibits RIPK2 expression and interacts with RIPK2, which may represent 2 mechanisms through which HBeAg blocks nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 1 ligand-induced NF-κB activation in HepG2 cells. Our findings identified novel molecular mechanisms whereby HBeAg modulates intracellular signaling pathways by targeting RIPK2, supporting the concept that HBeAg could impair both innate and adaptive immune responses to promote chronic HBV infectio
Optical and Near-Infrared Photometry of Nova V2362 Cyg : Rebrightening Event and Dust Formation
We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of a classical nova,
V2362 Cyg (= Nova Cygni 2006). V2362 Cyg experienced a peculiar rebrightening
with a long duration from 100 to 240 d after the maximum of the nova. Our
multicolor observation indicates an emergence of a pseudophotosphere with an
effective temperature of 9000 K at the rebrightening maximum. After the
rebrightening maximum, the object showed a slow fading homogeneously in all of
the used bands for one week. This implies that the fading just after the
rebrightening maximum ( less or equal 1 week ) was caused by a slowly shrinking
pseudophotosphere. Then, the NIR flux drastically increased, while the optical
flux steeply declined. The optical and NIR flux was consistent with blackbody
radiation with a temperature of 1500 K during this NIR rising phase. These
facts are likely to be explained by dust formation in the nova ejecta. Assuming
an optically thin case, we estimate the dust mass of 10^(-8) -- 10^(-10)
M_solar, which is less than those in typical dust-forming novae. These results
support the senario that a second, long-lasting outflow, which caused the
rebrightening, interacted with a fraction of the initial outflow and formed

P-Process Nucleosynthesis inside Supernova-Driven Supercritical Accretion Disks
We investigate p-process nucleosynthesis in a supercritical accretion disk
around a compact object of 1.4 M_solar, using the self-similar solution of an
optically thick advection dominated flow. Supercritical accretion is expected
to occur in a supernova with fallback material accreting onto a new-born
compact object. It is found that appreciable amounts of p-nuclei are
synthesized via the p-process in supernova-driven supercritical accretion disks
(SSADs) when the accretion rate m_dot = M_dot c^2/(16 L_Edd) >10^5, where L_Edd
is the Eddington luminosity. Abundance profiles of p-nuclei ejected from SSADs
have similar feature to those of the oxygen/neon layers in Type II supernovae
when the abundance of the fallback gas far from the compact object is that of
the oxygen/neon layers in the progenitor. The overall abundance profile is in
agreement with that of the solar system. Some p-nuclei, such as Mo, Ru, Sn, and
La, are underproduced in the SSADs as in Type II supernovae. If the fallback
gas is mixed with a small fraction of proton through Rayleigh-Taylor
instability during the explosion, significant amounts of Mo92 are produced
inside the SSADs. Ru96 and La138 are also produced when the fallback gas
contains abundant proton though the overall abundance profile of p-nuclei is
rather different from that of the solar system. The p-process nucleosynthesis
in SSADs contributes to chemical evolution of p-nuclei, in particular Mo92, if

Hepatitis C Virus Nonstructural 5A Protein Inhibits Lipopolysaccharide-Mediated Apoptosis of Hepatocytes by Decreasing Expression of Toll-Like Receptor 4
Background. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) has been shown to modulate multiple cellular processes, including apoptosis. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of HCV NS5A on apoptosis induced by Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 ligand, lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods. Apoptotic responses to TLR4 ligands and the expression of molecules involved in TLR signaling pathways in human hepatocytes were examined with or without expression of HCV NS5A. Results. HCV NS5A protected HepG2 hepatocytes against LPS-induced apoptosis, an effect linked to reduced TLR4 expression. A similar downregulation of TLR4 expression was observed in Huh-7-expressing genotype 1b and 2a. In agreement with these findings, NS5A inhibited the expression of numerous genes encoding for molecules involved in TLR4 signaling, such as CD14, MD-2, myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88, interferon regulatory factor 3, and nuclear factor-κB2. Consistent with a conferred prosurvival advantage, NS5A diminished the poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase cleavage and the activation of caspases 3, 7, 8, and 9 and increased the expression of anti-apoptotic molecules Bcl-2 and c-FLIP. Conclusions. HCV NS5A downregulates TLR4 signaling and LPS-induced apoptotic pathways in human hepatocytes, suggesting that disruption of TLR4-mediated apoptosis may play a role in the pathogenesis of HCV infectio
Net Production in Several Mature Plants Grown at Different Altitudes
The net productions of Polygonum reynoutria L. ssp. asiatica, Solidago virgaaurea L. ssp. asiatica, and Prunella vulgaris L. ssp. asiatica were measured by the leaf-half method modified monthly in several native habitats of different altitude. With P. reynoutria, the net productivity was decreased from late July to late September, and also was decreased in higher habitats. The productivities of S. virga-aurea and P. vulgaris, however, were increased from late July to late August, and from about 600m to about 1500m elevation in the same season, and then decreased in both cases. The temperature that showed the maximum productivity was lower in S. virga-aurea than in P. vulgaris.
