Usefulness of the Texas award for performance excellence in education criteria for a comprehensive program review in student affairs: a case study of two departments in a division of student affairs at a research extensive university

The culminating recommendations of the United States Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellingsâ 2006 Commission on the Future of Higher Education report demand greater access, affordability, quality and accountability in higher education. Student affairs, as well as their academic counterparts, must show that they function effectively and contribute to student learning and development. A promising program review process for student affairs to fulfill this expectation is found in the Education Criteria of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and its state-level equivalent, the Texas Award for Performance Excellence in Education Criteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of the Texas Award for Performance Excellence Education Criteria, Progress Level, as the basis for a comprehensive program review in two diverse student affairs departments. Additionally, the study was to determine the potential usefulness of the Criteria as a management strategy for senior leadership in each department to focus on assessment, planning, improvement and change. The descriptive case study was conducted using naturalistic inquiry methodology with two student affairs departments. The researcher spent nine months in the field as a participant observer. Methodology included observations of training and team leader meetings; interviews with participants, department directors, and the Office of the Vice President; document review of both self-study reports; and the researcherâÂÂs reflexive journal. Student affairs departments are particularly well-suited for the quality concept of serving customers and, in this case, students as their primary customer. The researcher concluded that the Texas Award for Performance Excellence in Education Criteria serve as a useful basis for a comprehensive program review and as a management strategy for senior leadership under the following conditions: The department must be a mature and functional unit. Student affairs staff need a foundation in quality principles, in general, and the core values, Criteria and language of the Texas Award for Performance Excellence in Education before embarking on the self-study process. The Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Category and the Planning Category provided the most introspection and action planning for both departments. The Process Category was the most challenging for both departments

Cu4.35Cd1.65As16: the first polyarsenic compound in the Cu–Cd–As system

The first polyarsenic compound in the Cu–Cd–As system was obtained by solid-state reaction of the elements and has a refined composition of Cu4.35 (2)Cd1.65 (2)As16 (tetracopper dicadmium hexadecaarsenide). It adopts the Cu5InP16 structure type. The asymmetric unit consists of one Cu site, a split Cu/Cd site and four As sites. The polyanionic structure can be described as being composed of As6 rings in chair conformations which are connected in the 1-, 2-, 4- and 5-positions. The resulting layers evolve along the c axis perpendicular to the ab plane. One Cu atom exhibits site symmetry 2 and is tetrahedrally coordinated by four As atoms. The other Cu atom, representing the split site, and the corresponding Cd atom have different coordination spheres. While the Cu atom is tetrahedrally coordinated by four As atoms, the Cd atom has a [3 + 1] coordination with a considerably longer Cd—As distance

Influence of Valence Electron Concentration on Laves Phases: Structures and Phase Stability of Pseudo‐Binary MgZn2–xPdx

A series of pseudo‐binary compounds MgZn2–xPdx (0.15 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were synthesized and structurally characterized to understand the role of valence electron concentration (vec) on the prototype Laves phase MgZn2 with Pd‐substitution. Three distinctive phase regions were observed with respect to Pd content, all exhibiting fundamental Laves phase structures: 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 (MgNi2‐type, hP24; MgZn1.80Pd0.20(2)), 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 (MgCu2‐type, cF24; MgZn1.59Pd0.41(2)), and 0.62 ≤ x ≤ 0.8 (MgZn2‐type, hP12: MgZn1.37Pd0.63(2)). Refinements from single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction indicated nearly statistical distributions of Pd and Zn atoms among the majority atom sites in these structures. Interestingly, the MgZn2‐type structure re‐emerges in MgZn2–xPdx at x ≈ 0.7 with the refined composition MgZn1.37(2)Pd0.63 and a c/a ratio of 1.59 compared to 1.64 for binary MgZn2. Electronic structure calculations on a model “MgZn1.25Pd0.75” yielded a density of states (DOS) curve showing enhancement of a pseudogap at the Fermi level as a result of electronic stabilization due to the Pd addition. Moreover, integrated crystal orbital Hamilton population (ICOHP) values show significant increases of orbital interactions for (Zn,Pd)–(Zn,Pd) atom pairs within the majority atom substructure, i.e., within the Kagomé nets as well as between a Kagomé net and an apical site, from binary MgZn2 to the ternary “MgZn1.25Pd0.75”. Multi‐centered bonding is evident from electron localization function (ELF) plots for “MgZn1.25Pd0.75”, an outcome which is in accordance with analysis of other Laves phases

In this work, investigations on the phase formation and properties of pnictides and silver(poly)chalcogenidehalides were performed. The existence of orthorhombic, black arsenic was disproved. Besides the synthesis of the first coinage metal-polyarsenide Cu4Cd2As16, a new structure type of Laves phases was prepared. The thermoelectric properties of Ag5Te2Cl confirm the influence of low-dimensional interactions on the electronic structure. Furthermore, a measuring system for impedance and Seebeck-coefficients was planned, constructed and set into operation
