    “Ghost tablet” husks excreted in feces in large bupropion XL overdose

    Background: Extended-release medications are widely prescribed across the spectrum of medical specialties; however, there is heterogeneity in how they are formulated. Commonly, they consist of an insoluble matrix or shell from which drug elutes, which may then be observed by patients when excreted in feces. We describe the case of a patient who ingested a large amount of extended-release bupropion tablets and subsequently passed a large number of these so-called “ghost tablets” in his stool. Case Details: A 19-year-old male presented in status epilepticus following intentional overdose of an unknown substance. He had prolonged QRS and QT intervals on ECG, hypotension requiring vasopressors, and tachycardia, and progressed to cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. On hospital day 4, he passed several large bowel movements containing apparent tablets. Serum bupropion and hydroxybupropion levels performed on serum taken at time of admission were 1800 ng/mL and 4200 ng/mL, respectively. Case Discussion: “Ghost tablets,” the insoluble remnant of some extended-release dosage forms, have been previously reported to appear in patients' stool in the course of therapeutic dosing. We present the case of a considerable quantity of these ghost tablets recovered from stool following a large bupropion XL overdose. Conclusion: Healthcare providers should be aware of the potential for this phenomenon to occur in poisoned patients. It should be documented as physical evidence of overdose in addition to clinical evidence

    A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p -type III-V DMS the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied oxygen orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with recent experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.     Ferromagnetism in (In,Mn)As Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Thin Films Grown by Metalorganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy

    In1-xMnxAs diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) thin films have been grown using metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Tricarbonyl(methylcyclopentadienyl)manganese was used as the Mn source. Nominally single-phase, epitaxial films were achieved with Mn content as high as x=0.14 using growth temperatures Tg>475 C. For lower growth temperatures and higher Mn concentrations, nanometer scale MnAs precipitates were detected within the In1-xMnxAs matrix. Magnetic properties of the films were investigated using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Room-temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in a sample with x=0.1. Magnetization measurements indicated a Curie temperature of 333 K and a room-temperature saturation magnetization of 49 emu/cm^3. The remnant magnetization and the coercive field were small, with values of 10 emu/cm^3 and 400 Oe, respectively. A mechanism for this high-temperature ferromagnetism is discussed in light of the recent theory based on the formation of small clusters of a few magnetic atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in JVST

    High TC ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconducting GaN:Mn films

    Wurtzite GaN:Mn films on sapphire substrates were successfully grown by use of the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system. The film has an extremely high Curie temperature of around 940 K, although the Mn concentration is only about 3 ~ 5 %. Magnetization measurements were carried out in magnetic fields parallel to the film surface up to 7 T. The magnetization process shows the coexistence of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic contributions at low temperatures, while the typical ferromagnetic magnetization process is mainly observed at high temperatures because of the decrease of the paramagnetic contributions. The observed transport characteristics show a close relation between the magnetism and the impurity conduction. The double exchange mechanism of the Mn-impurity band is one of the possible models for the high-TC ferromagnetism in GaN:Mn.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physica

    Band structure model of magnetic coupling in semiconductors

    We present a unified band structure model to explain magnetic ordering in Mn-doped semiconductors. This model is based on the pp-dd and dd-dd level repulsions between the Mn ions and host elements and can successfully explain magnetic ordering observed in all Mn doped II-VI and III-V semiconductors such as CdTe, GaAs, ZnO, and GaN. This model, therefore, provides a simple guideline for future band structure engineering of magnetic semiconductors.Comment: 4+ pages, 5 figure
