Quantum creep and quantum creep transitions in 1D sine-Gordan chains
Discrete sine-Gordon (SG) chains are studied with path-integral molecular
dynamics. Chains commensurate with the substrate show the transition from
collective quantum creep to pinning at bead masses slightly larger than those
predicted from the continuous SG model. Within the creep regime, a field-driven
transition from creep to complete depinning is identified. The effects of
disorder in the external potential on the chain's dynamics depend on the
potential's roughness exponent , i.e., quantum and classical fluctuations
affect the current self-correlation functions differently for .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
GCIP water and energy budget synthesis (WEBS)
As part of the World Climate Research Program\u27s (WCRPs) Global Energy and Water-Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Continental-scale International Project (GCIP), a preliminary water and energy budget synthesis (WEBS) was developed for the period 1996–1999 from the “best available” observations and models. Besides this summary paper, a companion CD-ROM with more extensive discussion, figures, tables, and raw data is available to the interested researcher from the GEWEX project office, the GAPP project office, or the first author. An updated online version of the CD-ROM is also available at http://ecpc.ucsd.edu/gcip/webs.htm/. Observations cannot adequately characterize or “close” budgets since too many fundamental processes are missing. Models that properly represent the many complicated atmospheric and near-surface interactions are also required. This preliminary synthesis therefore included a representative global general circulation model, regional climate model, and a macroscale hydrologic model as well as a global reanalysis and a regional analysis. By the qualitative agreement among the models and available observations, it did appear that we now qualitatively understand water and energy budgets of the Mississippi River Basin. However, there is still much quantitative uncertainty. In that regard, there did appear to be a clear advantage to using a regional analysis over a global analysis or a regional simulation over a global simulation to describe the Mississippi River Basin water and energy budgets. There also appeared to be some advantage to using a macroscale hydrologic model for at least the surface water budgets
ADHM/Nahm Construction of Localized Solitons in Noncommutative Gauge Theories
We study the relationship between ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution
generating technique'' of BPS solitons in noncommutative gauge theories.
ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution generating technique'' are the most
strong ways to construct exact BPS solitons. Localized solitons are the
solitons which are generated by the ``solution generating technique.'' The
shift operators which play crucial roles in ``solution generating technique''
naturally appear in ADHM/Nahm construction and we can construct various exact
localized solitons including new solitons: localized periodic instantons
(=localized calorons) and localized doubly-periodic instantons. Nahm
construction also gives rise to BPS fluxons straightforwardly from the
appropriate input Nahm data which is expected from the D-brane picture of BPS
fluxons. We also show that the Fourier-transformed soliton of the localized

Noncommutative geometry and physics: a review of selected recent results
This review is based on two lectures given at the 2000 TMR school in Torino.
We discuss two main themes: i) Moyal-type deformations of gauge theories, as
emerging from M-theory and open string theories, and ii) the noncommutative
geometry of finite groups, with the explicit example of Z_2, and its

Loop quantum gravity: the first twenty five years
This is a review paper invited by the journal "Classical ad Quantum Gravity"
for a "Cluster Issue" on approaches to quantum gravity. I give a synthetic
presentation of loop gravity. I spell-out the aims of the theory and compare
the results obtained with the initial hopes that motivated the early interest
in this research direction. I give my own perspective on the status of the
program and attempt of a critical evaluation of its successes and limits.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure
Asymptotics of Spinfoam Amplitude on Simplicial Manifold: Lorentzian Theory
The present paper studies the large-j asymptotics of the Lorentzian EPRL
spinfoam amplitude on a 4d simplicial complex with an arbitrary number of
simplices. The asymptotics of the spinfoam amplitude is determined by the
critical configurations. Here we show that, given a critical configuration in
general, there exists a partition of the simplicial complex into three type of
regions R_{Nondeg}, R_{Deg-A}, R_{Deg-B}, where the three regions are
simplicial sub-complexes with boundaries. The critical configuration implies
different types of geometries in different types of regions, i.e. (1) the
critical configuration restricted into R_{Nondeg} is degenerate of type-A in our definition of degeneracy, but implies
a nondegenerate discrete Euclidean geometry on R_{Deg-A}, (3) the critical
configuration restricted into R_{Deg-B} is degenerate of type-B, and implies a
vector geometry on R_{Deg-B}. With the critical configuration, we further make
a subdivision of the regions R_{Nondeg} and R_{Deg-A} into sub-complexes (with
boundary) according to their Lorentzian/Euclidean oriented 4-simplex volume
V_4(v), such that sgn(V_4(v)) is a constant sign on each sub-complex. Then in
the each sub-complex, the spinfoam amplitude at the critical configuration
gives the Regge action in Lorentzian or Euclidean signature respectively on
R_{Nondeg} or R_{Deg-A}. The Regge action reproduced here contains a sign
factor sgn(V_4(v)) of the oriented 4-simplex volume. Therefore the Regge action
reproduced here can be viewed a discretized Palatini action with on-shell
connection. Finally the asymptotic formula of the spinfoam amplitude is given
by a sum of the amplitudes evaluated at all possible critical configurations,
which are the products of the amplitudes associated to different type of

A survey of spectral models of gravity coupled to matter
This is a survey of the historical development of the Spectral Standard Model
and beyond, starting with the ground breaking paper of Alain Connes in 1988
where he observed that there is a link between Higgs fields and finite
noncommutative spaces. We present the important contributions that helped in
the search and identification of the noncommutative space that characterizes
the fine structure of space-time. The nature and properties of the
noncommutative space are arrived at by independent routes and show the
uniqueness of the Spectral Standard Model at low energies and the Pati-Salam

Simple model for quantum general relativity from loop quantum gravity
New progress in loop gravity has lead to a simple model of `general-covariant
quantum field theory'. I sum up the definition of the model in self-contained
form, in terms accessible to those outside the subfield. I emphasize its
formulation as a generalized topological quantum field theory with an infinite
number of degrees of freedom, and its relation to lattice theory. I list the
indications supporting the conjecture that the model is related to general
