An overview of a regional meteorology warning system
In this work we present a regional meteorology warning system, particularly the operational weather warning system used by the Basque Meteorology Agency (Euskalmet) for Basque Country. System considers different meteorological phenomena capable of generate warnings, and is based on combined thresholds criteria depending on particular weather event and area of territory where is applied. In this work we describe the most significant aspects related with the warning event definition and the warning bulletin. Conclusions from comparison with the former system (prior to 2009) and feedback from different users are presented. The authors would like to thank the Meteorology Directorate – Interior Department – Basque Government for public provision of data and operational service financial support
Photochemical studies of cis-[Ru(bpy)2(4-bzpy)(CO)](PF6)2 and cis-[Ru(bpy)2(4-bzpy)(Cl)](PF6): Blue light-induced nucleobase binding.
The ruthenium(II) compounds cis-[Ru(bpy)2(4-bzpy)(CO)](PF6)2 (I) and cis-[Ru(bpy)2(4-bzpy)(Cl)](PF6) (II) (4-bzpy=4-benzoylpyridine, bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The crystal structure of II was determined by X-ray diffraction. The photochemical behavior of I in aqueous solution shows that irradiation with ultraviolet light (365nm) releases both CO and 4-bzpy leading to the formation of the cis-[Ru(bpy)2(H2O)2]2+ ion as identified by NMR and electronic spectroscopy. Carbon monoxide release was confirmed with the myoglobin method and by gas chromatographic analysis of the headspace. CO release was not observed when aqueous I was irradiated with blue light (453nm). Changes in the electronic and 1H NMR spectra indicate that I undergoes photoaquation of 4-bzpy to form cis-[Ru(bpy)2(CO)(H2O)]2+. Blue light irradiation of aqueous II released the coordinated 4-bzpy to give the cis-[Ru(bpy)2(H2O)(Cl)]2+ ion. When the latter reaction was carried out in the presence of the nucleobase guanine, Ru-guanine adducts were formed, indicating that the metal containing photoproduct may also participate in biologically relevant reactions. The photochemical behavior of I indicates that it can release either CO or 4-bzpy depending on the wavelength chosen, a feature that may have therapeutic application

Magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Carnian/Norian boundary interval from the Pizzo Mondello section (Sicani Mountains, Sicily)
The 146.5 m-thick Upper Triassic limestone section at Pizzo Mondello in the Sicani Mountains of western Sicily is characterized by high quality of exposure, accessibility, and stratigraphic continuity. Magnetostratigraphic results delineate 12 normal and reverse polarity magnetozones, labelled successively from the base upwards as PM1n, PM1r, PM6n, PM6r. The Carnian/Norian boundary, based on conodont biostratigraphy, falls somewhere in the PM3n to PM5n interval which corresponds to the E14n to E16n magnetozone interval in the Newark reference sequence of polarity reversals. Comparison of magnetobiostratigraphic data from the Newark basin, Pizzo Mondello and other Late Triassic marine sections available from the literature suggests the existence of a reduction in sedimentation rate in the Tethyan marine domain at around the Carnian/Norian boundary. Although the Newark and the expanded Pizzo Mondello sections correlate well with each other, correlation with the condensed Kavur Tepe and Scheiblkogel sections is unsatisfactory. A re-interpretation of the Kavur Tepe results suggests that the section is younger than its previous correlation with the Newark section, and that it was deposited in the northern instead of the southern hemisphere. Most of the condensed Tethyan marine sections are seen to be highly discontinuous, as evidenced by concantenated conodont total range zones
Correlated fragile site expression allows the identification of candidate fragile genes involved in immunity and associated with carcinogenesis
Common fragile sites (cfs) are specific regions in the human genome that are
particularly prone to genomic instability under conditions of replicative
stress. Several investigations support the view that common fragile sites play
a role in carcinogenesis. We discuss a genome-wide approach based on graph
theory and Gene Ontology vocabulary for the functional characterization of
common fragile sites and for the identification of genes that contribute to
tumour cell biology. CFS were assembled in a network based on a simple measure
of correlation among common fragile site patterns of expression. By applying
robust measurements to capture in quantitative terms the non triviality of the
network, we identified several topological features clearly indicating
departure from the Erdos-Renyi random graph model. The most important outcome
was the presence of an unexpected large connected component far below the
percolation threshold. Most of the best characterized common fragile sites
belonged to this connected component. By filtering this connected component
with Gene Ontology, statistically significant shared functional features were
detected. Common fragile sites were found to be enriched for genes associated
to the immune response and to mechanisms involved in tumour progression such as
extracellular space remodeling and angiogenesis. Our results support the
hypothesis that fragile sites serve a function; we propose that fragility is
linked to a coordinated regulation of fragile genes expression.Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in BMC Bioinformatic

Evaluation of T tube trial as a strategy of weaning from mechanical ventilation
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) is an important strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality in critical care patients. In this setting, this study aimed at evaluation of T-tube trial (TT) in weaning from MV. METHODS: Patient admitted in the ICU were included if they present the following inclusion criteria: MV > 24 hours, no neuromuscular disorders, PaO2/FiO2 ratio >200, hemodynamic stability, reversion of the cause of respiratory failure, adequate respiratory drive. All were submitted to TT. Failure was defined by the presence of one of these symptoms: RR > 30 ipm, hypoxemia, tachycardia, arrhythmia, hypertension or hypotension. After two hours of TT, patients without failure criteria were extubated. After 48 hours of adequate spontaneous respiration the patient was considered successful weaned. Results were considered significant if p 24 horas, ausência de doença neuromuscular, relação PaO2/FiO2 > 200, estabilidade hemodinâmica, reversão da causa da intubação traqueal e drive respiratório adequado.
Quantum value indefiniteness
The indeterministic outcome of a measurement of an individual quantum is
certified by the impossibility of the simultaneous, definite, deterministic
pre-existence of all conceivable observables from physical conditions of that
quantum alone. We discuss possible interpretations and consequences for quantum
oracles.Comment: 19 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures; contribution to PC0
