Scattering Cross Section and Stability of Global Monopoles
We study the scattering of scalar waves propagating on the global monopole
background. Since the scalar wave operator in this topological defect is not
essentially self-adjoint, its solutions are not uniquely determined until a
boundary condition at the origin is specified. As we show, this boundary
condition manifests itself in the differential cross section and can be
inferred by measuring the amplitude of the backscattered wave. We further
demonstrate that whether or not the spacetime is stable under scalar
perturbations also relies on the chosen boundary condition. In particular, we
identify a class of such boundary conditions which significantly affects the
differential cross section without introducing an instability.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. To appear in Phys Rev
Avoiding Death by Vacuum
The two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) can have two electroweak breaking,
CP-conserving, minima. The possibility arises that the minimum which
corresponds to the known elementary particle spectrum is metastable, a
possibility we call the "panic vacuum". We present analytical bounds on the
parameters of the softly broken Peccei-Quinn 2HDM which are necessary and
sufficient conditions to avoid this possibility. We also show that, for this
particular model, the current LHC data already tell us that we are necessarily
in the global minimum of the theory, regardless of any cosmological
considerations about the lifetime of the false vacua.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Proceeding for the conference "Discrete 2012",

Charge breaking bounds in the Zee model
We study the possibility that charge breaking minima occur in the Zee model.
We reach very different conclusions from those attained in simpler, two Higgs
doublet models, and the reason for this is traced back to the existence of
cubic terms in the potential. A scan of the Zee model's parameter space shows
that CB is restricted to a narrow region of values of the parameters
