    Azadipyrromethenes: from traditional dye chemistry to leading edge applications

    Azadipyrromethenes were first described over 70 years ago as blue pigments, but now are rapidly emerging as a compound class with highly desirable near infrared photophysical properties. Since the turn of the century several routes to azadipyrromethenes have been developed and numerous post-synthesis derivatizations have allowed for their exploitation in both biological and material sciences. The relative ease of access to specifically designed derivatives is now allowing their use in multiple technological formats from real-time fluorescence imaging, to solar energy materials, to optoelectronic devices and many more. In this review we have highlighted the synthetic component of this story as it is the ability to generate the designer azadipyrromethene that opens the door to exciting applications

    Consumer ethnicity three decades after: a TCR agenda

    Research into consumer ethnicity is a vital discipline that has substantially evolved in the past three decades. This conceptual article critically reviews its immense literature and examines the extent to which it has provided extensive contributions not only for the understanding of ethnicity in the marketplace but also for personal/collective well-being. We identify two gaps accounting for scant transformative contributions. First, today social transformations and conceptual sophistications require a revised vocabulary to provide adequate interpretive lenses. Second, extant work has mostly addressed the subjective level of ethnic identity projects but left untended the meso/macro forces affecting ethnicity (de)construction and personal/collective well-being. Our contribution stems from filling both gaps and providing a theory of ethnicity (de)construction that includes migrants as well as non-migrants

    Cation-Controlled Excimer Packing in Langmuir-Blodgett Films of Hemicyanine Amphiphilic Chromoionophores.

    Supramolecular structure of ultrathin films of hemicyanine dye bearing a crown ether group (CrHCR) was tuned by lateral pressure and investigated by means of compression isotherms, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, and X-ray reflectivity. Two different types of aggregation were revealed, depending on the absence or the presence of metal cations in the water subphase. While CrHCR forms at high surface pressures head-to-tail stacking aggregates on pure water, changing the subphase to a metal-cation-containing one leads to the appearance of well-defined excimers with head-to-head orientation. The structure of monolayers transferred onto solid supports by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was examined by use of X-ray reflectivity measurements and molecular modeling. A model of cation-induced excimer formation in hemicyanine Langmuir monolayers is proposed. Finally, fluorescence emission properties of LB films of CrHCR can be managed by appropriate changes in the subphase composition, this last one determining the type of chromophore aggregation
