Terahertz optically pumped silicon lasers
Stimulated terahertz (THz) emission from silicon single crystals doped by group-V donors has been obtained by optical excitation with pulsed infrared lasers. Pumping by a conventional TEA CO2 laser results in lasing on discrete lines between 1.3 and 7 THz (see figure). Laser thresholds can be as low as 10 kW/cm2. They depend on the donors species and the laser mechanism. Intracentre population inversion is realized between particular excited states which are large-spaced due to the chemical shift of the donor binding energy. The lifetime of an electron in an excited state (up to ~70 ps) is determined by the efficiency of phonon-assisted nonradiative relaxation. Optical excitation by the emission of a frequency-tunable free electron laser results in two different types of lasing. At relatively low pump intensities (~1 kW/cm2) the intracentre mechanism of lasing is dominating. At pump intensities above ~100 kW/cm2 stimulated scattering of pump photons on transverse acoustic intervalley phonons can occur in the vicinity of an impurity atom. This results in laser emission in the frequency range from 4.6 to 5.8 THz. In this case the laser frequency can be tuned proportionally to the pump frequency
SD-208, a novel protein kinase D inhibitor, blocks prostate cancer cell proliferation and tumor Growth in Vivo by inducing G2/M cell cycle arrest
Protein kinase D (PKD) has been implicated in many aspects of tumorigenesis and progression, and is an emerging molecular target for the development of anticancer therapy. Despite recent advancement in the development of potent and selective PKD small molecule inhibitors, the availability of in vivo active PKD inhibitors remains sparse. In this study, we describe the discovery of a novel PKD small molecule inhibitor, SD-208, from a targeted kinase inhibitor library screen, and the synthesis of a series of analogs to probe the structure-activity relationship (SAR) vs. PKD1. SD-208 displayed a narrow SAR profile, was an ATP-competitive pan-PKD inhibitor with low nanomolar potency and was cell active. Targeted inhibition of PKD by SD-208 resulted in potent inhibition of cell proliferation, an effect that could be reversed by overexpressed PKD1 or PKD3. SD-208 also blocked prostate cancer cell survival and invasion, and arrested cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. Mechanistically, SD-208-induced G2/M arrest was accompanied by an increase in levels of p21 in DU145 and PC3 cells as well as elevated phosphorylation of Cdc2 and Cdc25C in DU145 cells. Most importantly, SD-208 given orally for 24 days significantly abrogated the growth of PC3 subcutaneous tumor xenografts in nude mice, which was accompanied by reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis and decreased expression of PKD biomarkers including survivin and Bcl-xL. Our study has identified SD-208 as a novel efficacious PKD small molecule inhibitor, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of targeted inhibition of PKD for prostate cancer treatment
Is palliative care support associated with better quality end-of-life care indicators for patients with advanced cancer? A retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish the association between timing and provision of palliative care (PC) and quality of end-of-life care indicators in a population of patients dying of cancer. SETTING: This study uses linked cancer patient data from the National Cancer Registry, the electronic medical record system used in primary care (SystmOne) and the electronic medical record system used within a specialist regional cancer centre. The population resided in a single city in Northern England. PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective data from 2479 adult cancer decedents who died between January 2010 and February 2012 were registered with a primary care provider using the SystmOne electronic health record system, and cancer was certified as a cause of death, were included in the study. RESULTS: Linkage yielded data on 2479 cancer decedents, with 64.5% who received at least one PC event. Decedents who received PC were significantly more likely to die in a hospice (39.4% vs 14.5%, P<0.005) and less likely to die in hospital (23.3% vs 40.1%, P<0.05), and were more likely to receive an opioid (53% vs 25.2%, P<0.001). PC initiated more than 2 weeks before death was associated with avoiding a hospital death (≥2 weeks, P<0.001), more than 4 weeks before death was associated with avoiding emergency hospital admissions and increased access to an opioid (≥4 weeks, P<0.001), and more than 33 weeks before death was associated with avoiding late chemotherapy (≥33 weeks, no chemotherapy P=0.019, chemotherapy over 4 weeks P=0.007). CONCLUSION: For decedents with advanced cancer, access to PC and longer duration of PC were significantly associated with better end-of-life quality indicators
Satellite estimates of wide-range suspended sediment concentrations in Changjiang (Yangtze) estuary using MERIS data
The Changjiang (Yangtze) estuarine and coastal waters are characterized by suspended sediments over a wide range of concentrations from 20 to 2,500 mg l-1. Suspended sediment plays important roles in the estuarine and coastal system and environment. Previous algorithms for satellite estimates of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) showed a great limitation in that only low to moderate concentrations (up to 50 mg l-1) could be reliably estimated. In this study, we developed a semi-empirical radiative transfer (SERT) model with physically based empirical coefficients to estimate SSC from MERIS data over turbid waters with a much wider range of SSC. The model was based on the Kubelka–Munk two-stream approximation of radiative transfer theory and calibrated using datasets from in situ measurements and outdoor controlled tank experiments. The results show that the sensitivity and saturation level of remote-sensing reflectance to SSC are dependent on wavelengths and SSC levels. Therefore, the SERT model, coupled with a multi-conditional algorithm scheme adapted to satellite retrieval of wide-range SSC, was proposed. Results suggest that this method is more effective and accurate in the estimation of SSC over turbid water
The association of cold weather and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the island of Ireland between 1984 and 2007

Methods A time-stratified case-crossover approach was used to examine this relationship in two adult national populations, between 1984 and 2007. Daily mortality risk was examined in association with exposure to daily maximum temperatures on the same day and up to 6 weeks preceding death, during the winter (December-February) and cold period (October-March), using distributed lag models. Model stratification by age and gender assessed for modification of the cold weather-mortality relationship. Results In the ROI, the impact of cold weather in winter persisted up to 35 days, with a cumulative mortality increase for all-causes of 6.4% (95%CI=4.8%-7.9%) in relation to every 1oC drop in daily maximum temperature, similar increases for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke, and twice as much for respiratory causes. In NI, these associations were less pronounced for CVD causes, and overall extended up to 28 days. Effects of cold weather on mortality increased with age in both jurisdictions, and some suggestive gender differences were observed. Conclusions The study findings indicated strong cold weather-mortality associations in the island of Ireland; these effects were less persistent, and for CVD mortality, smaller in NI than in the ROI. Together with suggestive differences in associations by age and gender between the two Irish jurisdictions, the findings suggest potential contribution of underlying societal differences, and require further exploration. The evidence provided here will hope to contribute to the current efforts to modify fuel policy and reduce winter mortality in Ireland

AVIRIS calibration using the cloud-shadow method
More than 90 percent of the signal at an ocean-viewing, satellite sensor is due to the atmosphere, so a 5 percent sensor-calibration error viewing a target that contributes but 10 percent of the signal received at the sensor may result in a target-reflectance error of more than 50 percent. Since prelaunch calibration accuracies of 5 percent are typical of space-sensor requirements, recalibration of the sensor using ground-base methods is required for low-signal target. Known target reflectance or water-leaving radiance spectra and atmospheric correction parameters are required. In this article we describe an atmospheric-correction method that uses cloud shadowed pixels in combination with pixels in a neighborhood region of similar optical properties to remove atmospheric effects from ocean scenes. These neighboring pixels can then be used as known reflectance targets for validation of the sensor calibration and atmospheric correction. The method uses the difference between water-leaving radiance values for these two regions. This allows nearly identical optical contributions to the two signals (e.g., path radiance and Fresnel-reflected skylight) to be removed, leaving mostly solar photons backscattered from beneath the sea to dominate the residual signal. Normalization by incident solar irradiance reaching the sea surface provides the remote-sensing reflectance of the ocean at the location of the neighbor region
Satellite-Sensor Calibration Verification Using the Cloud-Shadow Method
An atmospheric-correction method which uses cloud-shaded pixels together with pixels in a neighboring region of similar optical properties is described. This cloud-shadow method uses the difference between the total radiance values observed at the sensor for these two regions, thus removing the nearly identical atmospheric radiance contributions to the two signals (e.g. path radiance and Fresnel-reflected skylight). What remains is largely due to solar photons backscattered from beneath the sea to dominate the residual signal. Normalization by the direct solar irradiance reaching the sea surface and correction for some second-order effects provides the remote-sensing reflectance of the ocean at the location of the neighbor region, providing a known 'ground target' spectrum for use in testing the calibration of the sensor. A similar approach may be useful for land targets if horizontal homogeneity of scene reflectance exists about the shadow. Monte Carlo calculations have been used to correct for adjacency effects and to estimate the differences in the skylight reaching the shadowed and neighbor pixels
Immunohistochemical detection of ERβ in breast cancer: towards more detailed receptor profiling?
Oestrogen receptor (ER) is used routinely to predict endocrine responsiveness in patients with breast cancer. A second ER, ERβ has been described but its significance remains undefined; most studies have described mRNA levels rather than protein expression.
