Biodiversity of the Collembola Fauna of Wetland Kerkini (N. Greece), with description of the sexual dimorphism of Entomobrya atrocincta Schött 1896 (Collembola: Entomobryomorpha)
A report on the results of a research into some aspects of the collembolan fauna of the
Greek Nature Reserve associated with Lake Kerkini, known as Wetland Kerkini, is presented. The
nature reserve is large and includes a wide variety of habitats, many of which were not included in
this preliminary survey. From the areas sampled we recorded 44 species, of which 39 were previously
described, two (Folsomia potapovi Jordana & Baquero n. sp., Entomobrya naziridisi Jordana & Baquero
n. sp.), are new to science, while three are identifi ed to generic level; a further 21 are new records for
Greece, and an additional 11 species are new records to the Greek Mainland. Sampling with Berlese-
Tullgren funnels and Malaise traps allowed us to capture species typical of soil and species present

Well dispersed fractal aggregates as filler in polymer-silica nanocomposites: long range effects in rheology
We are presenting a new method of processing polystyrene-silica
nanocomposites, which results in a very well-defined dispersion of small
primary aggregates (assembly of 15 nanoparticles of 10 nm diameter) in the
matrix. The process is based on a high boiling point solvent, in which the
nanoparticles are well dispersed, and controlled evaporation. The filler's fine
network structure is determined over a wide range of sizes, using a combination
of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Transmission Electronic Microscopy
(TEM). The mechanical response of the nanocomposite material is investigated
both for small (ARES oscillatory shear and Dynamical Mechanical Analysis) and
large deformations (uniaxial traction), as a function of the concentration of
the particles. We can investigate the structure-property correlations for the
two main reinforcement effects: the filler network contribution, and a
filler-polymer matrix effect. Above a silica volume fraction threshold, we see
a divergence of the modulus correlated to the build up of a connected network.
Below the threshold, we obtain a new additional elastic contribution of much
longer terminal time than the matrix. Since aggregates are separated by at
least 60 nm, this new filler-matrix contribution cannot be described solely
with the concept of glassy layer (2nm)

A Rheometry Method to Assess The Evaporation-Induced Mechanical Strength Development of Polymer Solutions Used For Membrane Applications
Rotational and oscillatory shear rheometry were used to quantify the flow behavior under minimal and significant solvent evaporation conditions for polymer solutions used to fabricate isoporous asymmetric membranes by the self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) method. Three different A-B-C triblock terpolymer chemistries of similar molar mass were evaluated: polyisoprene-^-polystyrene-6-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (ISV); polyisoprene-6- polystyrene-6-poly(V,A-dimethylacrylamide) (ISD); and polyisoprene-Z\u3e-polystyrene-h-poly(fer/- butyl methacrylate) (ISB). Solvent evaporation resulted in the formation of a viscoelastic film typical of asymmetric membranes. Solution viscosity and film viscoelasticity were strongly dependent on the chemical structure of the triblock terpolymer molecules. A hierarchical magnitude (ISV\u3eISB\u3eISD) was observed for both properties, with ISV solutions displaying the greatest solution viscosity, fastest film strength development, and greatest strength magnitude

Smart Skin Patterns Protect Springtails
Springtails, arthropods who live in soil, in decaying material, and on plants, have adapted to demanding conditions by evolving extremely effective and robust anti-adhesive skin patterns. However, details of these unique properties and their structural basis are still unknown. Here we demonstrate that collembolan skin can resist wetting by many organic liquids and at elevated pressures. We show that the combination of bristles and a comb-like hexagonal or rhombic mesh of interconnected nanoscopic granules distinguish the skin of springtails from anti-adhesive plant surfaces. Furthermore, the negative overhang in the profile of the ridges and granules were revealed to be a highly effective, but as yet neglected, design principle of collembolan skin. We suggest an explanation for the non-wetting characteristics of surfaces consisting of such profiles irrespective of the chemical composition. Many valuable opportunities arise from the translation of the described comb-like patterns and overhanging profiles of collembolan skin into man-made surfaces that combine stability against wear and friction with superior non-wetting and anti-adhesive characteristics
